2020 Top Prospects

John Michael Coreano  C - 2020 - Orlando, FL
Glenville State

Coreano is one of a few non-2020 prospects to fill into the showcase and made plenty of noise in both workouts and games, showing the ability to hold his own with players a year ahead in the process. He found the barrel well at the plate all weekend with a power approach, pulling his hands inside, turning the barrel over and lifting the ball with strength to the pull side.

Diego Tamariz  RHP - 2020 - Orlando, FL
Glenville State

Tamariz has made big strides in 2019, jumping up to 88 mph on the fastball in this latest look, holding strong at 86-88 across his three innings of work. The operation is simple and controlled, allowing him to repeat well with good use of the lower half while maintaining direction to the plate. He has heavy life on the fastball complemented by a tight, late breaking curveball that he showed the ability to manipulate between 10/4 and 11/5 shape. The long, lean frame with athleticism at present projects to added velocity as Tamariz makes for an intriguing uncommitted righthander headed into his senior spring.

Lucas Lorenzo  SS - 2020 - Tallahassee, FL
Uncommitted

Lorenzo showed some of the loudest tools of the weekend across all facets of the game and is a very intriguing two-way prospect headed into his senior spring. He found the barrel well throughout the weekend, using a simple operation and approach at the plate to square the ball out front and drive it to and through both gaps. He also jumped on the mound and looked very mature with a free and easy delivery, using a fastball with late life clocked up to 88 mph paired with an effective swing-and-miss breaking ball to dominate in his brief pitching performance. He has plenty of remaining projection on both sides of the ball with room to fill in an athletic 6-foot-3 frame.

Triston Devane  3B - 2020 - Winter Haven, FL
Uncommitted

Devane showed some of the better all-around tools throughout the weekend as a projectable right-handed hitting infielder. He showed a sound approach at the plate with good bat speed generated and the ability to lift the ball with strength to the pull side. Defensively, he reads hops well from multiple infield positions with athletic actions to and through the ball and feel for adjusting his arm slot to throw on the move.

Beau Hubbard  3B - 2020 - Birmingham, AL
Uncommitted

Hubbard is a physically imposing left-handed hitting corner-infielder with juice at the plate that translates well to an opportunity at the next level. At the plate, he uses controlled violence and strength to whip the bat head through and turn the barrel over to drive the ball well to the pull side. He showed the ability to handle pitches all around the zone in-game on his way to multiple extra-base hits over the course of the weekend. Defensively, he showed more athletic than expected and the ability to handle himself at either of the corner-infield positions with a strong glove and enough arm strength.

Sam Odiorne  SS - 2020 - Madison, FL
Truett-McConnell University

Odiorne is another athletic middle-infielder with solid glove skills and easy actions around the diamond. He gains ground well in getting around the ball and receiving through it with a strong arm recorded up to 88 mph across the infield. At the plate, he shows a high intent approach and good use of the lower half to create strong line drive contact and barrel baseballs through both gaps.

Gavin Busby  LHP - 2020 - Evansville, WI
Ellsworth CC

Busby showed some raw offensive tools in batting practice, but profiles out a lefthanded pitcher with the pitchability and the projection to be successful at the next level. Sitting in the low-80s at present with more velocity to come, Busby works a delivery with slight deception. He works direct to the plate and to both halves, using a three-pitch mix, pairing a fastball with slight arm-side run with a straight changeup and a tight, late-breaking curveball.

Stanley Vasquez  RHP - 2020 - Yonkers NY 10701, NY
Uncommitted

Vasquez is a physical two-way prospect with strength at present on both sides of the ball and plenty more to come as he develops a bit more into his 6-foot-1 frame. His actions are athletic both defensively and on the mound and he showed off the arm strength on both sides, being clocked up to 91 mph from the outfield and 85 mph on the mound. He has a good power approach at the plate with explosiveness throughout and plenty of strength at contact.

Gus Vickers  SS - 2020 - Naples, FL

Offensively, he displays a simple contact-oriented approach, staying short and direct to the ball creating occasional lift and pop to the pull side. In-game he showed the ability to turn the barrel inside out and drive the ball the other way, rounding out the tools he showed in BP. Defensively, he moves well around the infield with solid catch and throw skills and the ability to make plays on the move with relative ease.

Max Merlan  OF - 2020 - Chula Vista, CA
College of the Redwoods

Merlan is a physical right-handed hitting outfielder with the raw tools to be a successful player at the next level with a bit of cleaning up. Offensively, he showed well with some juice in the bat and feel for the barrel as the ball comes off well when squared. He swings with high intent and creates good bat speed, using a bit of a time-oriented approach looking to lift to the pull side. Defensively and on the mound, he showed decent arm strength with a quick, over the top arm action from both the outfield and on the mound, keeping throws low and on-line and creating good downhill plane respectively.

Brandon Merrill  LHP - 2020 - Clermont, FL
Uncommitted

Merrill is a large, projectable left-hander who showed the potential to be a two-way prospect at the next level with good in-game instincts. He is mature on the mound with a smooth delivery and a two-pitch mix that was successful in game as he commands to all parts of the zone and showed the ability to manipulate both pitches to create consistent weak contact. He showed some feel for the barrel at the plate as he swings with high intent and creates some strength at contact when he can get the barrel out front and meet it on his line drive swing path.

Tahir Meulens  SS - 2020 - Boynton Beach, FL
ASA

Meulens was one of the more athletic prospects at the event with raw tools on both sides of the ball that with fine tuning, can be successful at the next level. The actions are raw in both the infield and outfield, but the arm strength made noise as he was clocked up to 91 mph from the outfield and 86 mph across the infield, paired with a strong 6.74 sixty-yard dash. There is fluidity to the swing at the plate, with good bat speed and explosiveness that will greatly improve with added feel for finding the barrel.

2022 Top Prospects

Carson Sekula  C - 2022 - Fort Myers, FL
Uncommitted

Sekula is another one of the non-2020s who had a strong weekend on both sides of the ball, holding his own as only a sophomore playing among majority seniors. The defensive skillset is advanced for his age, showing a maturity behind the dish in game and arm strength that will play well with the raw defensive skillset. He is loose and explosive at the plate with some length to the swing at times, but has the high potential of developing an advanced offensive skillset as he adds strength to the body over the next two-plus years.
