DJ Jefferson (2019 RHP, Las Vegas, NV) showed no signs of being tired during his 8 AM start as he came out pumping his fastball in the 88-92 mph range, showing the same fast and projectable arm action he has all summer. He worked down well with his fastball and also mixed in a low-70s curveball with his he was able to miss bats, striking out three in his two innings.
Countering Jefferson was recent Vanderbilt commit and righthander Jack Leiter (2019 RHP, Summit, NJ) who ran his fastball up to 90 mph for the East Squad. Showing a compact arm action, Leiter commanded his glove side extremely well with his fastball and lived low in the one while mixing both a slider and curveball in for strikes.
In a power versus power showdown, another Vanderbilt commit, Trejyn Fletcher (2020 OF, Portland, ME), put an impressive swing on a 91 mph fastball from Jefferson as he turned on the pitch for a hard double down the line for the first hit of the game. It was more of the same for Fletcher in his next two at-bats, jumping on additional fastballs which he laced into left field, finding the barrel both times. To put an exclamation point on his game, Fletcher was also up to 90 mph with a hard slider at 78 mph.
A physical first baseman, Joey Nicolai (2019 1B, Newport Beach, CA) showed his strength as he managed to put a fastball up on his hands into right field which got past the diving right fielder for a double. He quickly came in to plate the first run of the game on a single off the bat from Bobby Spencer (2019 3B, Marietta, GA), which was of the ground ball variety back up the middle.
Jared Southard (2019 RHP, Leander, TX) impressed in his two innings on the mound, sitting in the 88-90 mph range with fastball, showing a quick arm and control through the zone with several spotted to his glove side. He also offered a hard two-seam fastball with late running life, a changeup, slider, and curveball, all of which he threw for strikes and did a nice job of staying off the barrels with.
Jimmy Starnes (2019 RHP, Richmond, VA), a West Virginia commit, showed a loose quick arm in his two innings of work and filled the strike zone while running his fastball up to 88 mph. He also showed a nice feel for his slider and confidence in throwing in, going to the 76 mph pitch in both 3-1 and 3-2 count for strikes to pick up the punch out.
Thomas Keehn (2019 SS, Highland, MD), a primary infielder, showed a quick arm and strong, durable build on the mound as well as a feel for his secondary pitches. Up to 90 mph with his fastball, Keehn showed lots of confidence in his changeup and went to the late diving pitch frequently up to 81 mph.
Corbin Carroll (2019 OF, Seattle, WA) offers an intriguing tool set with his bat speed and foot speed from the left side of the plate. He hands the barrel well and showed looseness to his hands while squaring up an outer half 90 mph fastball which he put into the left-center field gap for a run scoring triple, turning around first base in 4.29 seconds.
After finding the barrel a few times yesterday with no hits to show, Jason Hodges (2019 OF, Park Forest, IL) found the barrel once again and did a nice job of staying back on a curveball and lined the pitch hard back up the middle.
Fritz Genther (2019 SS, Kingston, NY) had a two-hit day, twice swinging to the left side with his first going to left field before beating out an infield single while also scoring a run.
Alex Greene (2020 OF, Edgewater, MD) and Ethan Long (2020 3B, Gilbert, AZ) each threw an inning for their respective club and impressed with the same mid-90s arm strength both showed in the outfield. Long and Greene are both rising sophomores and shows big fastball, Long touching 91 mph while Greene topped 90 mph frequently, showing fast arms and life on their secondaries.
Making the trip down from Canada, Jaden Brown (2019 SS, Mississauga, ON) showed off his strength and ability to drive the ball the opposite way just as he did on an 86 mph fastball away, barreling the ball for a triple to the opposite field while showing his speed around the bases.
Andrew Jenkins (2019 3B, Atlanta, GA), a secondary pitcher, showed three pitches for strikes and had perhaps the hardest sinking life on his fastball, topping out at 88 mph while flashing both a curveball and changeup for strikes in a quick 1-2-3 inning.
