Scott Wins MVP Two Ways

PHILADELPHIA – When the folks at Perfect Game reached out to invite him to pitch in the 2026 PG All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors, Cullen Scott had one request.

“You mind if I get a couple of at-bats, too?”



Along with his dad, Scott traveled from the family’s home in Texas to Citizens Bank Park. The trip proved to be a huge success as he starred on the mound and at the plate and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Scott, 16, pitched a scoreless first inning and struck out two. In the fourth inning, he belted a grand slam six rows up into the left-field seats to lead the National team’s 6-1 win over the American team.

“He showed us why he’s here as a pitcher and a hitter,” said Greg Sabers, PG’s vice president of scouting and showcases. "He’s one of the top pitchers here, but he’s too good a hitter to put the bat down.”

Sabers went on to say that Scott has had a “massive summer.” It included his hitting 100 mph on the mound at the Area Code Games. At the PG All-Star Game in Philadelphia, the powerfully built right-hander sat 95-97 mph and touched 98 mph.

Scott is a junior at Melissa High School, an hour north of Dallas. PG ranks him as the top pitcher in the Class of 2028 and the No. 2 overall player. He also plays corner infield. An honor student, Scott is being recruited by some of the top college programs in the nation. Beyond that, he's a potential first-round draft pick.

The question is: Where does his future lie, as a hitter or a pitcher?

“Both,” said Jered Goodwin, PG’s vice president of scouting operations. “We’ve been trying to figure it out for years. It’s hard when you throw three pitches for strikes, throw 100, hit balls out of big-league parks and you’re young for your grade. Both.”

That’s exactly how the 6-3, 218-pound Scott is approaching things.

“I want to do both,” he said. “That’s my plan. I’m going to ride it out as long as I can. My main goal at these things is to show I can hit. Because everybody sees the arm talent and sometimes the bat gets dimmed down from that. Everybody is focused on the arm. So that was my goal to come out here and show I can hit.”

So, what’s his favorite?

“I just love playing baseball,” he said. “Obviously, if you ask any baseball player that question they’re going to say whatever they’re doing best that day is going to their favorite. But I think overall both sides of the ball is fun. Especially hitting and pitching on the same day. I like to bring the adrenaline from pitching into the box.”

Darren Scott, Cullen’s dad, grew up playing rugby and cricket in his native New Zealand. He’s been in the United States for 23 years and is an accomplished rugby coach at the college level. He’s also become a bit of a baseball coach.

“An Instagram coach,” Cullen joked. “I practice real hard with my dad every day.”

Darren has studied the game and its fundamentals. He’s studied the mechanics of the swing and the pitching delivery. He works on it all with his son and, clearly, has done a good job.

“There’s a lot of geometry in baseball,” Darren said. “Hands above the ball for a hitter. Finger control for a pitcher.”

Darren stresses the importance of consistency to his son. And that goes for the emotional side of the game, as well.

“Always stay between 6 and 8 emotionally,” he said, referring to a scale of 1 to 10.

It’s a fresh take on the old adage about never getting too high or too low.

It works for Cullen.

He enjoyed a pretty big moment hitting a grand slam at the home of the Philadelphia Phillies in the PG All-Star Game.

And what did he do?

“I put my head down and ran,” he said. “I didn’t even see it all the way. My first home run at a big-league stadium. It was pretty cool. I’ll never forget it.”
