Chesterfield First Community Athletic Complex

CHESTERFIELD, MO — It was a perfect weekend for softball, with 16 teams converging on the Chesterfield First Community Athletic Complex to compete in the High School Division. Teams from Illinois, Minnesota, and Iowa were there to battle it out, and there was only one undefeated team in the tournament: the Southeast Iowa All-Stars 16U Gold Flowerbach, who went a stellar 5-0 on the weekend. We were treated to some stellar performances all weekend and below we highlight some of the standout athletes who caught our eyes.

Lucy Turner (2027, Marion, IA) of the Cedar Rapids Reds was a truly dynamic two-way player this past weekend. Offensively, she batted .444 with 5 RBIs and an impressive 6 stolen bases, which led the tournament. She also scored 6 runs for her team and drew 3 walks. In the circle, Turner pitched 6 innings, striking out 7 batters while giving up 0 earned runs. She finished the weekend with a 1-0 record and an elite WHIP of 0.17.

Meah Oros (2030, Hartford, IL) of the Illinois Gators 16U was an offensive powerhouse over the weekend. She led the tournament with 10 hits, finishing the weekend with a .714 batting average. She tallied eight singles, one double, and a home run. She came in clutch multiple times for her team, driving in eight runs and scoring three times herself. Oros does a great job of staying behind the ball, showing a strong ability to go with the outside pitch to the opposite field.

Ava Kirchgatter (2028, Rogers, MN) of the 18U MN Force Impact Dailey had a fantastic weekend as a two-way player. At the plate, she finished the tournament with a .571 batting average, tallying eight hits with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. She scored eight times, which was a tournament-leading number, and added two RBIs, two stolen bases, and two walks on the weekend. In the circle, Kirchgatter also pitched eight innings for her team, tallying 12 strikeouts.

Quinn Tomkins (2029, Dubuque, IA) of the Cedar Rapids Reds was a truly consistent force for her team offensively. She finished the tournament with eight hits, batting .667. She tallied five singles, a double, a triple, and a home run, while driving in eight RBIs for her team. She also stole three bases, scored six times, and drew two walks. This right-handed hitter showed great strike zone awareness and barrel control in her at-bats, along with a great ability to drive the ball to all fields.

Marin Bast (2029, St. Michael, MN) of the 16U MN Force Impact Honeycutt was an impressive offensive force this past tournament. She finished the weekend batting .667, tallying eight hits, five of which were extra-base hits. She drove in four runs for her team and scored four times. This left-handed hitter has incredible hand-eye coordination, a loose upper body, and generates a great amount of barrel speed. She starts in an open stance and covers both sides of the plate really well; her barrel control and awareness are next-level, and overall she's a great specimen of pure athleticism and strength. Keep your eye on this athlete as she could compete at the next level both as a softball player and weightlifter.

Brylee Bach (2028, Ankeny, IA) of the Southeast Iowa All-Stars 16U Gold Feuerbach was an unstoppable offensive force for her team this past weekend. She led the tournament with an impressive .800 batting average, tallying eight hits, four of which were extra-base hits. She drove in two runs, scored seven times, and stole an impressive four bases on the weekend. This left-handed hitter uses a great combination of speed and pop to be an effective offensive tool. With her short game, she does a great job keeping the ball to the left side and staying inside the ball, but she also turns on the pitch really well for power. She has an athletic build, covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and her speed is a difference-maker on the basepaths.

Kierson Griffith (2029, Carbon Cliff, IL) of the Nebraska Gold 309 Griffith was an incredible offensive force this past tournament. She finished her tournament with eight hits, including one triple, showing off her speed. She drove in a run, scored four times, and stole two bases for the Nebraska Gold. Griffith is a true utility player with the ability to play all positions except for pitcher. This right-handed hitter has incredibly fast hands and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. She has a scrappy presence in the box and puts together feisty at-bats.

Eva Affeldt (2028, Roseville, MN) of the 18U MN Force Impact Dailey was one of the top table setters of the weekend. She finished the tournament batting .467 with seven hits, all being singles. Once she reached base, she created chaos, stealing five bases and scoring six times. She also came in clutch multiple times for the Minnesota Force Impact, driving in four runs. This lefty batter does a great job with contact-point awareness and the ability to put the ball on the ground to the opposite field to use her legs and speed. As an outfielder, she gets a great first step and covers a lot of ground.

Payton Harris (2028, Mediapolis, IA) of the Black Dragons 18U is a true utility player and athlete. She finished her weekend batting an impressive .636, driving four singles, a double, a triple, and a home run. She finished the tournament with four RBIs, scored six times, and stole two bases. This right-handed hitter is as dynamic as they come; she has an athletic stance and balanced approach, uses a strong backside drive to create next-level barrel whip, and possesses plus barrel speed and control. She is built strong and knows how to utilize her body to generate maximum power. In the circle, Harris hurled 8.2 innings, tallying seven strikeouts.

Ella Weaver (2028, Millstadt, IL) of the Illinois Gators 16U 2028 AK put on an offensive show last weekend. She finished her weekend batting .583 with a total of seven hits, including three doubles, and tallied three RBIs for her team. This left-handed hitter is athletic and starts in a balanced stance; she does a great job keeping her hands loose and whipping her barrel wherever the ball is pitched. She shows a great ability to drive the ball to all fields and adjust to pitch location quickly.

Ruby Routh (2030, New Market, MN) of the Minnesota Apex 16U National Headding/Costley was one of the top producers offensively for her team in this tournament. She finished batting .455 with two extra-base hits, including a home run, but the stat that seems to stand out the most is her ability to drive in runs—she tallied eight RBIs for her team. This right-handed hitter has a solid hand path to the ball, staying behind it rather than wrapping around it. She has a solid up-the-middle swing with power to the left-center field gap. Ruby is athletic and has the ability to play any position on the field aside from pitcher, and her athleticism was on full display this past weekend.

Emma Pinkston (2029, Mount Vernon, IL) of the Renegades had a phenomenal weekend as a two-way player. At the plate, she finished the tournament batting .600 with six hits, including a tournament-leading four doubles. She drove in three runs for her team and scored five times. This right-handed hitter and pitcher was effective on both sides of the ball, also finishing the weekend 2-0 in the circle by hurling 11 innings and striking out 17 batters. She is explosive off the mound, and at the plate, she shows a strong tendency to pull with incredibly fast hands to turn on the inside pitch.

Aubree Bunnell (2028, Donnellson, IA) of the Southeast Iowa Swarm was a major offensive anchor for her team this past tournament. She finished the tournament batting an impressive .667 with six hits, all singles. She drove in two runs, scored three times, walked twice, and showed off some speed with two stolen bases. This right-handed hitter has an athletic stance and gets to an early toe-touch. She has a nice hand path to the ball and did a great job driving it where it's pitched, showing the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap and move well on the basepaths. Her front side stays firm, giving her the ability to sit back well on changeups or any offspeed pitches, and she showed great consistency in the box for her team.

Vivian Barriger (2030, Millstadt, IL) of the Gators Smith had an incredible weekend at the plate, batting .625 and tallying five hits—including a double and two home runs. She drove in three runs, stole five bases, scored seven times, and drew four walks. Her power was on full display; as a right-handed hitter with fast hands and the ability to turn well on the inside pitch, she uses her backside to fire hard against a firm front side, generating next-level barrel whip.

Other notable performances from the weekend…

Riley McGrew (2029, Flora, IL) of the Renegades had an incredible weekend at the plate, finishing with a .667 batting average. She tallied six hits—including two singles, two doubles, a triple, and a home run—while driving in two runs and scoring four times. She wrapped up the tournament with an elite 2.144 OPS.

Virginia Cavaliers  2026 In Review:  Under the leadership of first year Head Coach Chris Pollard, the Cavaliers won 37 games which was the second most victories by a first-year coach in program history.  Virginia went (37-23) finishing tied for 8th in the ACC and earned an at-large bid to the Hattiesburg Regional.  They fielded a talented offense that averaged over 8-runs per game, highlighted by AJ Gracia and Eric Becker who were both selected on Day 1 of the 2026 MLB Draft.  While the defensive squad wasn’t quite as elite as usual, they were ultra-competitive on the mound with a strong rotation and lock down bullpen.  With plenty of talent returning for Pollard and his staff in ’27, they should be a force on a national level once again.  Impact Returners:    Senior Antonio Perrotta (.266/.459/.431, 5 HR, 6 2B, 24 RBI) experienced...

That Off-Season Program Wasn't Built for Your Son. It Was Built for Nobody. The Harsh Reality of Skill Development · Part 2 of 5 Somewhere right now, a pitcher is starting a twelve-week off-season program. It came from his travel team. Or a trainer. Or a big leaguer's Instagram. It has phases and a logo, and every kid in the building got the same one. Here is the harsh reality. That program was written before anybody looked at your son. It doesn't know he exists. It was built for the average pitcher... and the average pitcher does not exist. A Template Fixes Somebody's Problem. Maybe Not His. Every pitcher who is stuck is stuck for a reason. We call that reason his constraint... the thing that is actually limiting him right now. For one kid it is strength. For the next it is mobility. For the next it is a mechanical inefficiency, or an arm that isn't recovering, or a body that...

Your Son's April Arm Injury is Being Scheduled Right Now   The Harsh Reality of Skill Development - Part 1 of 5 Let me start this series with something most people in baseball won't say out loud. In my experience, a great many of the arm problems we will see next April are being set up right now... in October, November and December. Not necessarily because a young pitcher is throwing too much. Often it's because of what happens when he stops. Here is the pattern. I have watched it for more than thirty years. The fall season ends. The arm is tired, so the family does what seems like the responsible thing.  They shut it down. No throwing. For a lot of kids, no anything. Weeks go by. The holidays come and go. Then somebody looks at a calendar in January and realizes tryouts are three weeks away. Suddenly, an arm that has done nothing since October is asked to go from zero to game...
