Going Independent 

Last year Oregon State put together another quality season, hosting a regional and going to the Lexington Super Regional. The Beavers will face a new challenge in 2025: going independent. With the Pac-12 as we know it quickly dismantling, the Beavers wound up being the odd man out with no conference to go to. The athletic department made the decision to go independent for baseball, presenting both a challenge and an interesting new route to Omaha. A quality lineup of opponents await the Beavers, who will play only 20 games at home and 16 games on a neutral site. The path to Omaha is still there, but will look a little different for the Beavers this spring. 

Replacing Key Pieces

The Beavers will have some big time production to replace, starting off with first overall pick Travis Bazzana. Bazzana put together an absurd 2024 season and was the heart and soul of the Beaver offense over the last three years. Outfielder Micah McDowell will be another key bat that will be missed, along with veteran infielder Elijah Hainline. The Beavers will also have a lot of valuable innings to replace on the mound, including massive holes left within the starting rotation. Aiden May (2nd rd pick) started 14 games and Jacob Kmatz (5th rd pick) started 16 games, going a combined 14-4 on the year. 

Offensive Star Power

While the production of Bazzana will be a tough piece to replace, the lineup does have some big time bats returning along with a big time addition. Trent Caraway will be a crucial bat for the Beavers. The sophomore infielder was limited by injury throughout his freshman campaign, but finished the year with a strong showing in the Cape and an extremely loud performance this fall. The third baseman will be a driving force in the middle of the order and will garner plenty of draft attention as a draft eligible sophomore. Gavin Turley is another power bat that has day one upside. Highly touted out of high school, the outfielder made an immediate impact his freshman year and filled an expanded role last spring. Thunderous bat speed and loud tools across the board make for an impact profile that will be a key piece to the Beavers production this spring. Washington transfer Aiva Arquette rounds out a trio of big time bats. Arquette may have the highest upside of the bunch and could go within the Top-10 picks in the draft this summer. Arquette's physicality at 6-foot-5, 220-pounds stands out up the middle. While he mostly played second base at Washington, Arquette will look to take over shortstop this spring. On the offensive side, the power potential is what carries the profile. There is impact already present, especially pullside, with plenty more to come. 

Offensive Depth

Outside of the big three, the Beavers have quality depth and a variety of other potential impact bats. Wilson Weber will provide a veteran presence behind the dish and speedster Easton Talt will likely fill key innings in the outfield. Dallas Macias will likely man center field and brings an intriguing set of skills to the lineup. Macias is a run-creator that could fit near the top of the order and the power continues to develop. First baseman Jacob Krieg can provide plenty of power. He hammers baseballs, posting big time EVs that have been up to 118 mph. Freshman Adam Haight is a two-way player who will likely see the most of his playing time at DH this spring and is another potential power bat that could provide some additional thump. 

Rotation Questions

Right-hander Eric Segura is the lone weekend starter to return. He started 15 games as a freshman, going 6-1 and posting a 4.93 ERA and will be relayed on yet again this year. Nelson Keljo may be the most important arm on the staff. The left-hander can run the fastball up to 97 mph and shows feel for a hard slider. He was fairly dominant out of the pen over his first two years, including 60 strikeouts over 43 innings in 2024. While he may end up filling innings at the back of the pen again, there is a chance he takes over a starting role. He's made four career starts and if he is able to make the transition successfully, it could solve a big question for the Beavers rotation. 

Freshman Dax Whitney has a chance to make an immediate impact. The young right-hander garnered plenty of buzz in last year’s draft, but opted to head to Corvallis and now looks like the future ace of the Beaver’s staff. Whitney can run the fastball into the mid-90s and shows advanced feel for his entire repertoire. Laif Palmer is another power arm that will be in the mix to fill starter innings. The sophomore right-hander only threw in six games last year, but has the stuff to be a weekend arm as the fastball sits in the mid-90s and pairs well with a wipeout slider. 

Bullpen Depth

As for the bullpen, there should be a good mix of intriguing young arm talent and quality veterans. Sophomores Drew Talavs and Matt Morrell both possess impressive fastball and could be backend options. James DeCremer is an injury bounce back candidate with potential power stuff. Wyatt Queen and Ethan Kleinschmit are JUCO transfers that put up some strong numbers last spring and this spring. Portland transfer Tanner Douglas is another backend option that has plenty of experience throwing key innings. The pen has the mix of power stuff and experience needed to go deep into the postseason. 

Overall Outlook 

The Beavers have become the premier powerhouse program on the West Coast. While they will face a ton of change this year, their status at the dominant force out west likely won’t change. The offense has the star power to put up runs at a high rate. The lineup will compete against any staff with the trio of Caraway-Turley-Arquette leading the charge. The pitching staff may not have the experience that we have seen in recent years, but the arm talent and the pieces needed to be successful are there. The roster has a mix of high-end veteran talent and young players that make you excited for the program both this year and for years going forward.

Three hitters and three pitchers that really impressed or improved their stock at the Area Code Select at Dodger Stadium.  Gotta start with James Clark as he stole the show offensively, and right out of the gate, with a pull side home run as just the second hitter of the game.  Added a triple to the pull side again, again on the barrel.  Added a single up the middle.  Really showed exceptional feel for the barrel.  Flew out to center field on two occasions, both barreled up pretty well, with one getting lost in the sun.  I’m old and salty, so didn’t give him the double for the cycle, but he was the most impressive bat (easily) on the day.   One of the other position players that impressed, I’ve been somewhat critical of, have spoken with his travel coach a little bit about him behind the plate, but Vista Murrieta catcher Taytum...

The start of another high school season is right around the corner in a handful of states and with that, as always, comes our Preseason High School Top-50. A whopping twenty states are represented in the initial Top-50, a number that is staggering when you look at the amount of depth some of these rosters have across the nation. Leading the group is St. John Bosco (CA), a team that brought home a CIF Southern D1 title in 2025 and bring back a strong group of seniors to look to repeat. Stoneman Douglas (FL) is a name most people should know by now in the high school ranks and comes in as our preseason #2 team, looking to win their sixth straight state championship in Florida.
