Kyle Hurt, USC
Kyle Hurt’s most recent start for USC against Stanford provided a completely different look for the young righthander, who earlier in the season was pitching exclusively out of the stretch. His performance against the Cardinal (6.1 IP, two runs on three hits and no walks with 9 strikeouts) was more along the lines of what was expected out of him when he reached campus after being named a PG All-American during the summer of 2016 as he looked like USC’s Friday night starter despite pitching the third and final game of the series.

The stuff has evolved as well for Hurt, whose velocity has ticked up now working at 89-92 consistently deep into games. In the past he flashed a curveball/slider combination but that combo has now morphed into a firmer curveball at 79-82 that generates more swings and misses and bad swings overall. He seems to have ditched the slider and has incorporated a cut fastball with short, late lateral action at 88-89 mph. The changeup has always been a weapon for him going back to high school when it was an advanced offering with arm-side fade and sink, and it has continued to be a pitch he throws with confidence to both right and lefthanded hitters at 83-85 mph.

Most notably for Hurt in this outing was the improved control and command. He allowed zero walks against one of the top teams in the nation and he struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning. As a draft-eligible sophomore Hurt could gain some momentum between now and early June if he can show that he can maintain this success over his next two starts to close out the season.
