Stephen Klein is a 2018 LHP/1B/OF with a 5-10 180 lb. frame from Metairie, LA who attends De La Salle HS. Medium frame with a lean build. Primary left handed pitcher with a simple side step to high leg lift delivery. Stays balanced at gather and utilized lower half well while working to the plate. Tends to land at a slightly closed front side position with stride. Clean arm circle at take back and released from a high three-quarters slot. Fastball showed slight cutting action to glove side in the low to upper 70's, topped at 79 miles per hour. Curveball had 11/5 shape with solid spin with good depth. Showed good feel for breaking pitch with the ability to deliver for strikes in both positive and negative counts. Consistently looked to attack the zone and consistently changed speed throughout each inning of work. Also worked out defensively from the outfield showing smooth paced, deliberate footwork while closing to the baseball. Clean glove actions at pick up and released from a three-quarters slot. Throws produced accurate, on line carry to the bag topping at 82 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with a narrow, crouched stance and high back elbow set. Swung with intent on a direct path to contact with an uphill barrel plane through extension. Flashed good hand speed while turning the barrel to contact and generated loud contact to the gaps when squared. Good student as well.
