Fernando Benavides is a 2018 SS/RHP, OF with a 5-7 155 lb. frame from Laredo, TX who attends Laredo United. Medium, athletic frame with with broad shoulders and present strength, has room to add more. Ran a 7.54 60-yard dash. Primary shortstop, moves well on feet, quick transfer and release from compact arm action with good carry across. Consistent actions, quick arm, showed nice balance while charging in. Also pitched, remains tall on back side with deliberate temp, short arm action in the back and works to three-quarters arm slot. Gets on top of fastball, topped out at 81 mph, mostly true with occasional cut to either side of plate. Holds velocity out of stretch, good curveball with 12-6 shape and depth from same arm slot. Righthanded hitter, starts with a high hand set and slight crouch in lower half. Lowers hands at start of swing and shifts weight to backside, slight uphill in plane and looks to lift, has a feel for the barrel with bat speed through the zone with occasional lift when out front. Very good student.
