Tyler Carpenter is a 2007 right hand hitting catcher from Elkins HS, residing in Sugarland, TX. Carpenter has a strong, stocky build on his 5'10" 170 lb. frame that actually looks a bit more solid than what is listed on paper. Carpenter's most outstanding abilities at this point of development are on the defensive side of the game. However, he does possess some offensive traits that are a good indication of a solid future with the bat. He hits from a square stance and showed a short swing, with quick hands. Carpenter takes an aggressive hack while maintaining good balance. His swing plane is pretty steep, capable of producing a lot of backspin that will result in carry to and through the gaps. The ball got off his bat well, an indication that Carpenter has good bat speed through contact. He was quite competitive in his at-bats, so continue to watch him develop as a hitter. On defense Carpenter flashed some plus pop times in the workout. He has a quick release with a solid average arm. Taken together, Carpenter's catch/throw tools make him a solid average thrower, capable of throwing out runners. He also showed good effort in blocking the ball. Carpenter is a pretty good athlete, particularly so for the catcher position, evident not so much witih his 4.75 home/1st but with his 7.05 60 yard time. He is a D1 college prospect that will have a chance to earn a professional opportunity with a solid college career, which Carpenter looks plenty capable of having.
