PG Grade: 9.5
Carlton has an excellent athletic body, with a long lean torso, muscular thighs and square shoulders. His arms appear to be longer than average for his size as he has a smooth, long flowing arm action with little tension. Carlton’s delivery matches the rest of his package, it flows smoothly and athletically with good balance and good line to the plate. While he was touching 90 mph in Jupiter, he topped out at 88 mph at the World Showcase and held his velocity between 85-87 well for 3 innings. His curveball is between 73-75 mph with some sweeping action and an early break. Carlton also throws a mid-70’s change up. Where Carlton needs to improve is to get some deception in his delivery or stuff. Despite solid pitches and mechanics, hitters get very good swings off him. When his ability to pitch catches up to his physical tools, he could be something extra special. His brother was a first round pick by Cleveland a couple years ago. Smith is a good student and has signed to attend Old Dominion.
