Brody Kato is a 2014 C/RHP with a 6-0 195 lb. frame from West Des Moines, IA who attends Palm Desert. Medium frame with a strong, athletic build. Ran a 7.11 sixty-yard dash. Primary catcher with a low, athletic set. Gains ground while working out of crouch with quick footwork. Quick, clean exchanges while working through transition. Released from a compact arm slot generated accurate on line carry to the bag. Topped at 77 miles per hour, best workout pop time of 1.95. Right handed hitter with an upright, even stance and smooth front side trigger. Simple, direct path to contact with a line drive plane through extension. Primarily used a gap to gap approach and repeated swing plane well. Squared up contact throughout batting practice utilizing his raw strength at contact to drive the ball to the gaps. Also pitched showing a smooth paced side step to leg lift delivery. Created some front side swing while working to the plate but maintained balance through finish. Tends to land at a slightly closed position creating some cross fire action at release. Primarily released from a high three-quarters arm slot creating occasional running action to arm side in the mid to upper 80's, topped at 89 miles per hour. Tends to slow arm speed with each off speed pitch. Curveball had 9/4 shape with some sweep to glove side when staying on top of offering. Also flashed a changeup in the low 80's that had some fading action to arm side. Looks to fill the strike zone with developing feel for the outside edge of the plate. Also showed the willingness to pitch backward with curveball and get ahead of hitter early.
