Kevin Shackelford is a 2007 C/P/1B from Providence High School in Charlotte, NC, with a 6'3'', 175 lb. frame. Named to the Top Prospect Team at the event. Very strong arm (78 mph) defensively with good throwing mechanics and accuracy. He is very fundamentally sound behind the plate and shows good lower half quickness. He is a high level defensive catcher, he just needs to speed up his release on his throws. At the plate he is a right handed hitter with a crisp swing and bat speed. He uses a no stride approach with a line drive swing plane that is short and quick to the ball. He doesn't try to do too much, he just stays balanced and hits the ball where it is pitched. He does drive the ball at times showing power in his swing, and it will be easy to see him hitting with more power in the future. On the mound he showed his good arm strength with his fastball that topped out at 84 mph. He also showed his toughness when he got hit in the back, but wasn't fazed. Shackelford is a good all-around player with great upside. He is a must follow, and is a very good student as well.
