Coach Steve Staker

I would like to introduce to you and say goodbye at the same time to a dear friend and longtime coach. If you are not from Iowa, you most likely have never heard of Coach Steve Staker. Coach Staker started coaching in a small town in northern Iowa many years ago. He coached baseball and football for 36 years in Fredricksburg where he became an Iowa Hall of Fame Coach. He then moved on to coach football at Coe College in Cedar Rapids from 2004 until he retired before the start of the 2015 season.

I met Coach Staker five years ago when my youngest son started his college baseball career at Coe College. I got the privilege to get to know him while watching and talking baseball at Coe games. Even though he coached football for most of his coaching career, you could tell he loved baseball. We would talk hitting and situations and would even second guess Coe’s head coach Steve Cook. I should tell you that the head coach was his son-in-law. I often wondered if Coach Staker took some of the things we talked about and relayed them to his son-in-law over the dinner table. 

I myself coached high school baseball here in Cedar Rapids for 14 years. I was lucky enough to coach both of my sons in those 14 years. After talking to Coach Staker and hearing about all the young athletes that he helped and the impression he made on them, I started to wonder if I made those same type of impressions on the players that I coached; I would like to think I did. Then I started thinking about coaches in general. Do they know what a big part they play in a young person’s life? Do they help players not only with the game of baseball but with life? Do they offer good advice to players when they need it? Are they there to just listen to a player when he needs someone to talk to? Do coaches know that they can make a good or bad impression with parents and even grandparents? I know Coach Staker knew that and I know that he has made a positive and lasting impression on his players and everyone associated with them. He certainly made a big impression on me.  I can only hope that I did the same.

I am not one of the regular writers for Perfect Game – in fact I work in the showcase department. I just wanted to share my experience with you about a coach that has only a few weeks left on this earth. Coach Staker is battling cancer. Although he won many battles on the baseball and football fields, this is a battle that he will not win. 

This will bring me to my final thoughts, and it is about baseball. I have found over the years that there is something magical about baseball. It’s not just the game, it’s the friendships that come from it. These are the kinds of friendships that last a lifetime. You as a parent have friends that you have met because of baseball. As players that attend Perfect Game showcases and tournaments, you have made friends that you will stay in touch with for the rest of your life. 

I have made many friends through the game of baseball. Because of baseball I met Coach Steve Staker. Although I only knew him for five years,  he made a big impression on me. I was lucky enough to call him a friend and that came about because of baseball. See, I told you there is something magical about the game.

Heaven is getting a winner with Steve Staker.

PHILADELPHIA – Carson Steingall had been to Citizens Bank Park many times over the years. After all, he hails from Nazareth, Pa., about 90 minutes up the road from the home of the Philadelphia Phillies and he counts himself as a big fan of the team. Zack Wheeler is his favorite. For the fourth time since its inception in 2023, two rosters comprised of the best rising juniors (and a handful of rising sophomores) will step out onto the field Friday afternoon, kicking off the All-American weekend. Pokers Rally to Capture 16U BCS Title A hot afternoon at JetBlue Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida ended in a 9-1 victory for the Original Florida Pokers 2028 National, defeating SBA Bolts Florida 2028 National on Monday to capture the 16U BCS National Championship. A pitchers’ duel kept the game scoreless through four innings before the Pokers broke it open with a five-run fifth inning. Over the 2026 draft cycle, UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky was the projected No. 1 pick throughout the entire cycle.
