Bobby Dalbec, 3B/RHP, Arizona

Arizona two-way talent Bobby Dalbec entered the spring as one of the top college players eligible for this year’s draft after an impressive 2015 season that saw him hit .319-15-53 in the middle of a lethal Wildcats’ offense. He also made 21 appearances on the mound, with seven of those coming in a starting role, posting a 3.21 ERA over 61 2/3 innings of work.

For as intriguing as his potential was on the mound it was the power in his righthanded swing that drew the most interest, as is also what garnered the lofty draft ranking. However, this year he hasn’t been able to find his groove, although it’s important to note that the new coaching staff has attempted to change his swing and approach. He’s hitting just .231 with five home runs, although he has continued to be productive, driving in 29 while playing solid defense at third base.

He’s made a bigger impact on the mound for a 28-16 Arizona squad that has made some noise in recent weeks despite recently losing their Pac-12 road series against USC. Pitching primarily out of the bullpen, Dalbec is 8-3 with six saves and a 2.78 ERA, and is Arizona’s go-to option when the game is on the line.

Dalbec quickly passes the eye test at 6-foot-4, 230-pounds. He has a physical and intimidating presence in the batter’s box, and during batting practice employs a full-field approach. He has enough bat speed to let the ball travel deep in the zone before exploding on it with a quick and easy stroke. His size, bat speed and strength gives him easy power with the ability to loft balls to the opposite field.
