The season is still young, but Florida State and South Carolina just seem to be a step ahead of the rest after five weeks of college baseball action. The Gamecocks captured an impressive home series win over Ole Miss this past weekend, while the Seminoles vaulted to the No. 1 spot in this week’s Perfect Game College Top 25 after sweeping North Carolina State at home.
While the Seminoles headline the latest rankings with the Gamecocks coming in at a very close No. 2, the rest of the top five is outstanding with No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 5 Oregon State leading the way.
Virginia escaped a couple of potential losses to go 3-0 against Boston College over the weekend, Vanderbilt took two of three from LSU at home over the weekend, and Oregon State’s pitching staff again was dominant in a road series sweep over Utah.
Louisiana-Lafayette, Oregon and Louisville entered the top 10 this week, with the Ragin’ Cajuns vaulting to No. 7 after another successful weekend, while the Ducks improved to No. 8 in the latest rankings after taking two of three at home from USC to begin Pac-12 play. Louisville had a perfect 5-0 week, with the offense shining against Samford in a non-conference series.
N.C. State dropped from No. 6 to No. 9 after the tough, but competitive, trip to Florida State, while LSU fell from No. 9 to No. 11 after the Vandy series loss. Cal State Fullerton also fell out of the top 10, moving from No. 7 to No. 13 after yet another unimpressive week of play.
Elsewhere in the rankings, Mississippi State and UCLA each vaulted three spots to No’s 17 and 18, respectively, after successful weekends, while Sam Houston State moved from No. 23 to No. 19, with in-state foe Texas dropping from No. 16 to No. 22 following a home series loss to Kansas.
UC Santa Barbara, Houston and San Diego entered this week’s rankings, while Miami, Indiana and Pepperdine dropped out.
The Perfect Game College Top 25 is released every Monday during the season.
