ABD Bulldogs win PG Pacific Coast Title

Fullerton, CA - There was a lot of talent on display in Fullerton California this past weekend. When the smoke cleared the ABD Bulldogs took home most of the hardware. Outstanding ABD outfielder Nathan Faulkner was named the tournament MVP and teammate Horacio Aldrete was named the events most valuable pitcher. The Bulldogs went unbeaten to win the second PG Pacific Coast Championship. Last year the Orange County Angels took the title. The Fullerton Stingers played their best baseball in the semi finals, but were defeated by ABD 6-3 in the final.

The Final 4 teams left competing on Monday included, PG USA, Saddleback Valley Devils, Fullerton Stingers and the ABD Bulldogs.

One semi final saw ABD beat PG USA 4-1 in a matchup of the only two unbeaten teams in the tournament. Aldrete shut down PG in a complete game, 2 hit gem. He struckout 9 PG hitters and was never in serious trouble. Faulkner, Josh Satin and Brad Schwarzenbach each had 2 hits to lead the ABD attack. ABD's Zech Zinicola made a couple outstanding plays at 3B and Faulkner made the play of the tournament catching a deep shot off the bat of a top "04" prospect, Randy Molina, against the CF wall.

Fullerton defeated Saddleback 6-1 in the other semi-final. Jeff Flaig hit a HR and went 3 for 3, reaching base all 4 times, to lead Fullerton. Travis Denker also homered for Fullerton. Jimmy Dietz was the winning pitcher. Fullerton put the game away with 4 runs in the first inning. Jack Rye and Jesse Mier both doubled for Saddleback and A.J. Lamanda was the only other Devil to get a hit. Justin Tellam looked outstanding behind the plate for Saddleback.

ABD and Fullerton played the championship game and ABD took home the title with a 6-3 victory. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2 run lead in the first inning. Then they scored one run in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th to take a 6-0 lead going into the final inning. Fullerton put together a rally to score three in the 7th, but it was far from enough. Josh Satin (ABD) hit a HR to aid the Bulldog cause. The winning pitcher was LHP Michael Joyce. Andrew Thomson came in and got the save. Joe Spiers singled stole 2nd and 3rd and scored for a big ABD run. RHP/1B Steven Wright made a great diving play at 1st base to save ABD a run. This is the first PG WWBA title for ABD after playing in numerous WWBA events all over the country. The Bulldogs had previously reached the semi-finals in the PG/Baseball America World Championship held in Jupiter, Florida and the Senior Division WWBA World Series in Marietta, Georgia last summer. They join the Orange County Angels, winners in 2002, as the only WWBA Pacific Coast Champions.

The tournament featured many highly ranked prospects including one of the top - 03s in the nation in Delmon Young, who pitched and played for the South Cal Titans. Young put on quite a display and even showed first round pitching ability. Many of the nation's top "04" prospects also played in the tournament. 16 teams entered the 3 day event. A rundown of the top prospects will be released later.

16u World Series Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Lucas Sullivan (2027, Winder, GA) absolutely shoved in the first round of the playoffs. He racked up a total of 13 strikeouts across his seven inning, complete game shutout performance. Sullivan worked three pitches for strikes with lots of comfort and only allowed two hits. Ran the fastball up to 86 and he got lots of swing and miss on the 11-5 curveball. Mixes speeds well and was electric to watch. Landon King (2028, San Mateo, CA) was just one of the best players on the field the first two rounds of the playoffs. Totaled four hits, two of those were for extra bases and scored three times.
