Banditos eye South Q repeat

Photo: Perfect Game

HOUSTON -- The Houston Banditos Black brought real star power to last year's Perfect Game WWBA South Qualifier. They're back with even more fire power this year.

The 5th PG WWBA South Qualifier is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15 through Monday, Sept. 17 at Baseball USA and seven other venues around the Houston metropolitan area. The tournament's champion receives an expense-paid invitation to next month's prestigious PG WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla.

In its short four-year history -- the first two South Qualifiers were held in 2004 and '05, the two most recent in 2010 and '11 -- the PG WWBA South Qualifier has already provided an important stage for prospects looking for an opportunity to play professionally. Forty-nine alumni have been drafted in the first 10 rounds of the MLB amateur draft in just the last two years.

Four alumni of the 2011 event were first round selections in June's draft: Gavin Cecchini (Mets), Courtney Hawkins (White Sox), Ty Hensley (Yankees) and Stryker Trahan (Diamondbacks). Tyler Gonzales (Blue Jays) was a first round compensation pick.

Cecchini, Hensley and Trahan all played with the Texas Sun Devils last September. Hawkins was with the Banditos Black and Gonzales with the Action Baseball Club.

This year's South Qualifier field consists of 40 teams, with 38 from Texas, one from Louisiana and one from Ontario, Canada. They'll be vying for that coveted championship and the lucrative reward that accompanies it.

The Banditos Black earned that reward a year ago when they beat the Dallas Patriots-Valdez in the South Qualifier championship game at the University of Texas' Disch-Falk Field in Austin. They did it with the help of 2011 Perfect Game All-Americans Courtney Hawkins and C.J. Hinojosa (Hinojosa was the tournament MVP) and a supporting cast of 16 teammates that had joined them in making NCAA Division I commitments.

This year's Banditos Black roster is even more impressive, with at least 20 prospects from the classes of 2013 and 2014 who have already made D-I commitments. That's from a 25-man roster that includes uncommitted 2014s Stone Garrett (Sugarland, Texas) and Justin Twine (Hemphill, Texas). Garrett, an outfielder, is ranked No. 10 nationally in his class and shortstop Twine is ranked No. 24.

There are four 2012 Perfect Game All-Americans on the Banditos Black roster: outfielder Nick Banks (2013, Tomball, Texas), a Texas A&M recruit; right-hander/first baseman Kacy Clemens (2013, Houston), Texas; right-hander Casey Shane (2013, Burleson, Texas), Texas A&M; and right-hander Kohl Stewart (2013, Tomball, Texas), Texas A&M.

Stewart's availability for the tournament is uncertain because he is the middle of his senior football season at Tomball High School. A top national football recruit that is also ranked as the No. 4 national baseball prospect by Perfect Game, he has accepted a football scholarship offer from A&M.

Another top right-hander on the Banditos' roster is Bryce Welborn (2013, The Woodlands, Texas), who in July was named the Most Valuable Pitcher at the PG WWBA 2013 Grads or 17u National Championship in Marietta, Ga., after the Banditos won that national title.

The Banditos Black have enjoyed a successful 2012 season to date. In addition to the championship at the PG WWBA 17u National Championship, they also finished as runner-up at the 16u Perfect Game World Series in Marietta in late July, and Twine was named the elite tournament's MVP. Another team carrying the Houston Banditos name finished third at the 14u Perfect Game World Series.

The South Qualifier championship trophy won't be handed to the Banditos Black, of course. The Dallas Patriots will field a team looking to improve on their runner-up finish from a year ago, and the Texas Sun Devils and Action Baseball Club -- both semifinalist in 2011 -- are back again.

The Sun Devils will miss their three first-round picks from a year ago, of course, but still look strong. Right-hander Casey Meisner (2013, Cypress, Texas) has committed to Texas Tech and first baseman Bryce Jordon (2014, Lake Charles, La.) has committed to LSU.

The Houston Heat, the organization that won the first two South Qualifiers in 2005 and '06, also has a strong team entered with four 2013 D-I recruits on their roster. The most prominent is third baseman and 2012 Perfect Game All-American Cavan Biggio (2013, Houston), the son of future hall-of-famer Craig Biggio and a Virginia recruit.

MLK East Scout Notes Recap

Perfect Game Staff

‘28 OF Jakob Groeschel (OH) continues to impress with the bat on the circuit, picked up 2 2Bs in the first game today. Really athletic, went 4.4 on turn; easy to dream on all the traits. #MLKEast @PG_OhioValley pic.twitter.com/wOIwnGKnkg — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) January 17, 2026 2028 OF Jakob Groeschel (Springfield, Ohio) broke out at this event last year hitting a casual .909, and although he didn’t turn in quite the same performance, he hit a strong .462 with 4 extra-base hits, 5 walks, 5 bags and only struck out once. He’s a pretty dynamic athlete who can do a lot of things well, but the bat is the calling card as he just lives on the barrel and has no problem handling all kinds of pitching. It’s a simple swing, but he’s got fast hands and he can really impact the ball without being overly physical yet.  2030 RHP Michael Vazquez...

Whitney may not just be the best arm in next year’s class, he may be the best arm in the entire country right now. The right-handed sits 98 mph with the heater and has been up to 100 mph. Both the slider and curveball are plus offerings that he spins extremely well. Whitney will mix in a quality Gavin changeup that sits in the upper-80’s and has also introduced a new cutter. All the pitches come from the exact same release point and jump out of the hand. He...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: Feb. 25

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
A few weeks into the season and the shape of the national picture is starting to emerge (slightly, let’s get too silly about early results). Some preseason favorites are humming exactly as advertised, a few dark horses are pawing at the gate, and a handful of early contenders are discovering that February optimism and March reality are not always the same thing. Across DII, DIII and the NAIA, pitching staffs are setting the tone, offenses are either detonating or recalibrating, and the Top 25 is already beginning to feel less theoretical and more earned.   DII UT Tyler is performing as predicted with a 12-2 start that includes a series win at Angelo State. The Patriots’ offense has not exactly been knocking the cover off the ball, but the pitching staff has been stingy, holding opponents to a .228 batting average.  They have not faced a ranked opponent yet, but...

Johnson County put together a 2nd consecutive undefeated week and moves into the top 5 with a 15-1 overall record. They will play 4 games against #22 Iowa Western this week who is also coming off an undefeated week. Fresno City (15-0) and Midland (13-0) are two undefeated programs to begin 2026. They have gone from not in the preseason top 25 to the top 15 in our rankings in less than a month. And welcome to the PG Juco Top 25 Cloud County (KS) who debuts at #23 and is coming off a huge 3 game sweep on the road in Texas of a previous top 10 program in our rankings. Plenty of good matchups ahead this...

College Players of the Week: Feb. 24

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
February 24 Perfect Game/Player of the Week: Will Gasparino, OF, UCLA After playing 117 games, launching 27 doubles and 25 home runs in Austin, TX for the University of Texas, Will Gasparino decided it was time to head back to his hometown of Los Angeles, CA. Based on his performance in the first two weeks of the season for the Bruins, he looks very comfortable and ready to push his name up the Draft Board. UCLA (6-1) enters 2026 with incredibly high expectations, jumped to No. 3 in our Top 25 poll with their 3-game sweep of previously ranked TCU and Gasparino provided much of the offensive firepower. For the week, the 6-6/220 outfielder went 7 for 13 good for a .538 BA, with a double, 5 home runs and 13 RBI. That brings his slash line through 7-games to .391/1.304/.548 with a double, a triple, 6 home runs and he has driven in a total of 15 runs. The scary thing is that Gasparino is just...

PG Salutes Chet Brewer, a Youth Baseball Pillar

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PG Salutes Chet Brewer, a Youth Baseball Pillar A few weeks ago, Perfect Game and its Believe in Baseball foundation held a fundraising event in Los Angeles. The “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction brought in thousands of dollars, all of which will go toward providing deserving youngsters an opportunity to play and grow in the game. Chet Brewer was not at the event – the former Negro Leagues star died at age 83 in 1990 – but his spirit was. Big time. “That night was all about Chet,” PG commissioner Dennis Gilbert said. “He was all about giving kids chances to play the game, especially kids from underprivileged backgrounds. “When you’re 15, 16, 17 years old – those years are the basis of your life. Chet helped put a lot of kids on the right path through the game of baseball.” Brewer’s impactful life has...
