PREMIUM: 25 other college baseball teams to watch

Florida has a monumental SEC-opening series at LSU coming up later this week, and will head to Baton Rouge, La., as the nation's top-ranked team after another solid week that included a 4-1 record and series win over Rhode Island.

The Gators have been ranked No. 1 in the Perfect Game Top 25 since the preseason rankings were unveiled. However, other teams around the country have made significant strides in the rankings.

Virginia made a huge statement over the weekend with a road series sweep against Clemson and moved from No. 9 to No. 4 as a result, while LSU climbed from No. 17 to No. 10 following a clean sweep of Cal State Fullerton. South Carolina also moved, going from No. 8 to No. 5 after a win over Clemson and series win over Cal State Bakersfield.

Speaking of Clemson, the Tigers dropped from No. 12 to No. 22 after a winless week, while UCLA fell from No. 10 to No. 21 after once again failing to produce offensively during a 1-2 weekend with losses to Georgia and USC.

Auburn (20) and Oregon (23) dropped out of the rankings to make way for Baylor and Arkansas, who each had great weeks. The Bears come in at No. 23 while the Razorbacks make their season debut at No. 25.

The conference breakdowns are as follows: Pac-10 5, ACC 5, SEC 5, Big 12 4, Conference USA 2 and MWC, Big West, WAC and Big East all with one representative.

The Perfect Game Top 25 is released each Monday during the season, and alwaays will include an additional listing of 25 teams to watch and a live chat with college baseball managing editor Kendall Rogers.

1. Florida (14-2)
Previous ranking: 1, Weekly record: 4-1
The Gators had another solid week that began with a tough midweek loss and ended with a midweek win before sweeping Rhode Island at home. Now comes a trip to hostile Baton Rouge, La.

2. Vanderbilt (16-1)
Previous ranking: 2, Weekly record: 5-0
It was another week of less than stellar competition for the Commodores, as they took midweek games from Wofford and Kennesaw State before sweeping Illinois-Chicago at home in a surprisingly hard-fought series.

3. Florida State (15-1)
Previous ranking: 6, Weekly record: 5-0
The Seminoles have been extremely consistent this season, and had another great week that included midweek wins over Maine and a home series sweep over Boston College.

4. Virginia (16-1)
Previous ranking: 9, Weekly record: 4-0
The Cavaliers put together their most impressive week of the season with a midweek win over Marshall before hitting the road and doing a clean sweep of Clemson.

5. South Carolina (11-2)
Previous ranking: 8, Weekly record: 3-1
The Gamecocks had a solid week that began with a series-clinching win over Clemson and ended with a solid series win over surprising Cal State Bakersfield.

6. Oklahoma (16-1)
Previous ranking: 5, Weekly record: 2-1
The Sooners had another successful week with a series win over Arkansas-Little Rock. However, the series win was a little too close for comfort for coach Sunny Golloway.

The Longhorns dropped a couple of spots to make way for others. They defeated Texas-San Antonio in midweek action before taking three of four from Brown.

The Tigers made a huge leap forward after another fantastic week. They defeated Sacred Heart in midweek action before sweeping Cal State Fullerton at home. Next is a huge series against Florida.

11. Cal State Fullerton (8-6)
Previous ranking: 7, Weekly record: 0-3
The Titans dropped a pair of games to LSU by one run to start their series in Baton Rouge, but were dominated in the series finale. Not a good weekend for the Titans.

12. Stanford (6-5)
Previous ranking: 13, Weekly record: 0-0
The Cardinal had the week off because of final exams, but still moved up a spot with several teams slipping in the rankings.

19. North Carolina (14-3)

Perhaps the Tar Heels got a little overconfident over the weekend. They swept midweek games from Elon and St. John's before somehow losing two of three to Wake Forest.

20. Tulane (11-4)
Previous ranking: 25, Weekly record: 2-1
Even with some quality arms missing time, the Green Wave put together another solid week that included a home series win over a solid Wichita State club.

21. UCLA (8-6)
Previous ranking: 10, Weekly record: 1-2
The Bruins would be just fine if they could find a way to hit with consistency. They dropped tough contests to Georgia and rival USC over the weekend.

Brotherly Love Inspires Carter Hadnot

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – Perfect Game has been a big part of Carter Hadnot’s life since he was 12. He participated in more than a dozen tournaments and showcases, including prestigious Select Festivals as a 13U and 14U player, as well as last summer’s PG All-Star Game for underclassmen in San Diego.   The PG event that Hadnot always wanted to be part of was the DICK’s All-American Classic. Now, that’s on his resume, too. He played in the 24th annual Classic earlier this week at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. “This means a lot to me,” he said during the event. “I always wanted to make it to Select Fest when I was younger. So, every time I get invited to an event it’s an honor and it’s fun. I don’t take it for granted. “This is definitely the one I always wanted to make it to. A lot of big names have...

Scott Wins MVP Two Ways

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – When the folks at Perfect Game reached out to invite him to pitch in the 2026 PG All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors, Cullen Scott had one request. “You mind if I get a couple of at-bats, too?” Along with his dad, Scott traveled from the family’s home in Texas to Citizens Bank Park. The trip proved to be a huge success as he starred on the mound and at the plate and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Scott, 16, pitched a scoreless first inning and struck out two. In the fourth inning, he belted a grand slam six rows up into the left-field seats to lead the National team’s 6-1 win over the American team. “He showed us why he’s here as a pitcher and a hitter,” said Greg Sabers, PG’s vice president of scouting and showcases. "He’s one of the top pitchers here, but he’s too good a...

Romero Slams His Way to Classic MVP

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – Sunday’s DICK’s Perfect Game All-American Classic was a pitching-dominated affair until the bottom of the eighth inning when the rain started to fall at Citizens Bank Park and Koa Romero stepped to the plate and did his best impression of Kyle Schwarber. Romero wears No. 12, just like Schwarber. He bats left-handed, just like Schwarber. He’s got big power, just like Schwarber. And at 5-10 and a rock-solid 225 pounds, he’s even built like Schwarber. Needless to say, Schwarber is Romero’s favorite player. So, it was all kind of storybook when Romero belted a grand slam to dead center to cap off the scoring in the West team’s 8-3 win over the East club in the 24th annual Classic. “This is a dream come true,” said Romero, who was named MVP of the game. “It’s amazing to be able to put a ball like that out of a...

A Philly Dream for Steingall

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – Carson Steingall had been to Citizens Bank Park many times over the years. After all, he hails from Nazareth, Pa., about 90 minutes up the road from the home of the Philadelphia Phillies and he counts himself as a big fan of the team. Zack Wheeler is his favorite. Steingall realized a dream when he pitched from the same mound that Wheeler does in Perfect Game’s fourth annual All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors on Friday. The dream got even better when Steingall, a 16-year-old right-hander, was named Most Valuable Pitcher after striking out the side in the third inning of the National team’s 6-1 victory over the American team. “It’s just an honor to be here,” Steingall said after receiving his trophy. “This event is the best of the best. It’s really cool to win something like this.” Steingall, who’ll...

The event will take place on Sunday, the same day as the DICK’S All-American Classic, taking place just across the street at Citizens Bank Park.  The showcase will allow Philadelphia-area players to gain exposure and will also honor Gillick, who has been a tremendous influence in both professional and amateur baseball.   Jered Goodwin, Vice President of Scouting Operations for Perfect Game, said the idea came naturally.  “Going to Philly made a lot of sense to honor Pat Gillick, who's been a...

PG All-Star Game Heads to Philly

Jheremy Brown
Article Image
For the fourth time since its inception in 2023, two rosters comprised of the best rising juniors (and a handful of rising sophomores) will step out onto the field Friday afternoon, kicking off the All-American weekend. While the Perfect Game All-American Classic is slated for a 1:35 first pitch at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday, 36 future hopefuls of the Classic will go up against one another in an American vs National clash at 11 AM Eastern, Friday morning.  With 36 players from across the country descending on Philadelphia, there will be plenty of familiar names in attendance as 24 of the 36 played in at least one PG Select Festival and all 36 attended either the he Sophomore National, Junior National, or the PG Underclass All-American Games this summer. Leading the charge are a pair of No. 1s in 2028 dynamic talent Dexter McCleon Jr and 2029 Macgraw VanWormer, a do-it-all...
