KANSAS

2010 FOLLOW LIST

COMPILED by DAVID RAWNSLEY

STATE OVERVIEW
Scouting directors and national cross-checkers have had plenty of reason this spring to stop in the middle of the country on their flyovers from coast to coast. But the reason Kansas has been on everyone’s travel itinerary was not what was expected at the start of the 2010 season.

As the high-school campaign unfolded in March, suburban Kansas City righthanders Ryne Stanek and Jason Adam were perceived as mid-round draft considerations, little different from most of the better-known pitching prep prospects in the Midwest. Both participated in the Area Code Games in California last summer, but neither distinguished himself enough to be more than solid college pitching prospects.

That all changed quickly.

Both righthanders came out of the gate throwing consistent plus fastballs, with the long, loose-armed Stanek touching 96 mph, and the bigger, stronger Adam bumping 95. They also showed the makings of good off-speed pitches, and demonstrated an idea how to command their pitches and work hitters.

Scouts immediately began looking at them in a different light, with both zooming into early-round consideration by mid-season. The first round was even being mentioned for both.

Stanek maintained his impressive stuff all spring and has every reason to hear his name called as early as the compensation or early second round. Should that occur, he would eclipse last year’s top Kansas pick, Maize High righthander Garrett Gould, who went 62nd overall to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Adam didn’t sustain his mid-90s velocity through the spring. His stock should dip, as a result, though he might have been less-certain to be an elite-round pick anyway as he is considered a much more difficult sign than Stanek. Adam has a firm commitment to attend Missouri, while Stanek’s obligation to Arkansas is considered more tenuous.

Both pitchers shot right past Lawrence High lefthander Albert Minnis, the state 6-A pitcher of the year in 2009 who didn’t improve his worth this spring with a less-dominating season. In all likelihood, he will fulfill his college commitment to Wichita State.

The 2009 college season was an historic one for college baseball in Kansas as it marked the first time that all three Division I programs (Kansas, Kansas State and Wichita State) advanced to the NCAA Division I regionals. Emporia State also had a noteworthy year as it made it all the way to the NCAA D-II World Series championship game, before losing. And with a lineup sprinkled with Kansas college talent, the home-standing El Dorado Broncos captured the Wichita-based National Baseball Congress World Series during the summer.

That run of success won’t happen again this year. Kansas State made the 2010 NCAA tournament, but Kansas and Wichita State did not.

That accomplishment is especially noteworthy for an emerging Kansas State program. Its regional appearance last year was the first in school history, and a second straight post-season appearance comes after the Wildcats were hit hard by graduation and the 2009 draft, which claimed 14-game winner A.J. Morris, a fourth-round pick.

This year’s Wildcat team has been described by scouts as a “true blue-collar team”, with no players with high-level tools but plenty of solid college players on the roster. With the possible exception of shortstop Carter Jurica (.359-11-65), the Wildcats may not have a player drafted in the top 10 rounds.

Wichita State, the state’s flagship college program, has rarely missed an NCAA tournament appearance over the last 30 years. It had to survive injuries to two of its trio of prized sophomore pitchers, lefthanders Charlie Lowell and Brian Flynn, who combined to make only seven starts. But the Shockers rode the arm of righthander Jordan Cooper to another successful season.

Cooper, draft-eligible as a 21-year-old sophomore, established himself as one of the country’s top pitching prospects by going 10-2, 1.62 with 20 walks and 94 strikeouts in 105 innings. He may provide scouts with an interesting dilemma, though, as his raw stuff doesn’t really equate to his being drafted in a high-enough round to warrant buying him out of his junior year at Wichita State. But his impressive pitchability will likely tempt a team to scoop him up by the second or maybe third round.

The more interesting Wichita State dilemma facing scouts might involve Shockers first baseman Johnny Coy. A seventh-round pick in 2008 out of a Missouri high school, the 6-foot-7 Coy initially attended Arizona State to play basketball, before deciding to transfer to Wichita State to pursue a baseball career.

Because he didn’t play baseball in college last year, Coy is just a freshman by eligibility standards, yet is eligible for the 2010 draft because he turns 21 (just barely) within 45 days of the draft. A rusty Coy played sparingly to start this season, but began tapping into his massive raw power potential as he worked his way into the Wichita State lineup on a regular basis. By most accounts, Coy is a much-better fit for 2011 as it would give him a greater chance to fine-tune all areas of his game.

Kansas’ inability to build on its 2009 success has a simple explanation (although Jayhawks coach Ritch Price would probably be loathe to use it as an excuse): Injuries. It started with 2009 Big 12 triple-crown winner Tony Thompson, who sustained a hairline fracture of his kneecap prior to the season, was rushed back after missing 18 games and became just a shadow of himself at the plate. He launched just six homers in 39 games after smashing 21 as a sophomore.

Righthander Brett Bochy, son of San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy, was quickly establishing himself as one of the most-dominant closers in the country (2-0, 0.78, 5 SV, 23 IP/9 H/34 SO), with a fastball that reached 96-97 mph, but went down with an elbow injury after 12 appearances and eventually had season-ending Tommy John surgery.

While Thompson should be only marginally impacted by his injury, and the lack of power he displayed upon his return to the lineup, Bochy’s stock should take a big hit. It’s also possible that Kansas ace righthander T.J. Walz could tumble, too. His performance (8-6, 5.06) slipped appreciably down the stretch, and he had already compounded his signability by putting out word to the scouting community that he has full intentions of returning to Kansas for his senior year. Walz is a top-notch student.

2026 MLB Draft Reports: 100-299 | 200-299 | 300-399 | 400-500 1. Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA R-R, 6-2/202, Chandler, AZ Previously Drafted: Never Drafted   Roch Cholowsky has consistently ranked at the top of the class throughout the cycle due to the safety and upside of the profile. Defensively, he is a plus defender at shortstop with soft hands, consistent actions, and quality range. Not only should he stick at the position long term, he should excel there at the next level. Offensively, there is a strong mix of hit and power potential from the right side of the plate. The swing is a bit unorthodox with a shorter finish, but Cholowsky consistently finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority to all fields. He has strong bat to ball skills with impact. He has walked more than stuck out during his collegiate career, giving him a high on-base ability. The run tool is the...

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Walter Izquierdo Jr. (2031, Miami, Fla.) showed off the upside on the mound for Beast Baseball 13u. The right-handed pitcher went four innings and collected three strikeouts while spreading two hits and two walks for one run. The fastball topped out at 80 and was consistently in the upper- 70s. Showed feel for a curveball with 12-6 shape and some looser vertical depth that was able to get weak contact. Competes in the zone well and showed some feel to work on the arm-side half of the plate. Intriguing upside on the young arm.   Brett Hamlin (2031, Jupiter, Fla.) showed off the barrel feel for FTB American 13u. The left-handed hitter collected nine hits, including two doubles and a triple, to drive in seven RBI. Strong hands and flips the hips well to create good bat speed. Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks
Article Image
JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...
