WWBA/PG Notes, Organization Profiles

WWBA/PERFECT GAME NOTES -- February 13, 2004 With a couple of feet of snow on the ground in the upper Midwest, it’s difficult to think about baseball being played. Here in Omaha they relish in putting pictures of Nebraska or Creighton players in the paper trudging though snow banks on the way to an indoor workout. But Creighton opens this weekend (in Colorado Springs) and Nebraska heads south for an opener next weekend. We’re just hoping the snow melts in time for the College World Series. The next event on the formal Perfect Game/WWBA schedule is the annual PG Indoor Showcase in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the PG facility. The dates this year are February 28-29. This event has attracted a significant number of the top prospects from around the Central region over the past years. If you are interested in attending and being evaluated by the Perfect Game staff, please call the PG offices at 319-298-2923. Of course, there is still the growing schedule of Perfect Game ID camps across the country that is continually being added to and updated. There are ID camps scheduled for Pennsylania, Texas and California over the next month, with a complete summer schedule being developed. Check the Perfect Game website (www.perfectgame.org) for a complete ID Camp schedule. Scouts, recruiters, parents and fans are heading to the PG website on a daily basis now for the scouting reports on the 525 players who attended the World Underclass Showcase in Fort Myers in January. Approximately 90 players per week are being added to the data base. We have been working on a series of profiles of WWBA teams and will run these throughout the spring. If you are a coach of a WWBA organization and have not been contacted about running a profile, feel free to contact us at admin@worldwoodbat.com and we will get something set up. Today’s profile is one the Houston Heat. THE HOUSTON HEAT If Texas has become the national hot bed for pitching prospects, then the Houston Heat are the Atlanta Braves. And with no disrespect intended for the Dallas Metroplex, the reality is that the Southeast Texas area, with Houston as the hub, has evolved over the last 10 years into the best pitching area in the country. While the Houston Heat are based out of the city, much of their roster comes from the outlying suburbs to all sides, some up to 100 miles away. (If you’ve ever been to Houston or lived there as I did for 10 years, you know there are A Lot of suburbs around Houston) The Heat recently finished third at the WWBA World Championships in Jupiter. Here is a list of pitchers on their roster who DID NOT travel with the team: RHP Homer Bailey (#5 ranked prospect in Class of 2004), RHP Kenn Kasparek (#10), LHP Troy Patton (#18), LHP Joe Savery (#104), RHP Jordan Dodson (#141), LHP Aaron Miller (#6 in the Class of 2006) and RHP Ryan Jenkins (#17 in the Class of 2006). The staff of Jupiter co-Most Valuable Pitcher RHP Sean Morgan, RHP Tyler Kersten, RHP Ricky Hargrove and RHP-SS Kyle Drabek did quite well without them. The Heat’s emphasis on pitching may or may not be that intentional, as we’re sure that manager and team director Phil Cross is equally proud of his many position prospects, but the quality starts at the top. Two of the Heat’s coaches and head player development instructors are David Evans and Mark Mangum. Evans was the 1989 JUCO Player of the Year at San Jacinto JC and later pitched professionally for 13 years. Mangum was a first round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 1997 out of Kingwood (TX) HS. Another assistant coach is former Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek, father of Kyle. A complete list of Heat directors, coaches and instructors includes: Phil Cross (Heat Director, manager, 18u Silver) David Evans (head coach, 18u Silver, instructor) John Ruiz (Heat Director, coach 18u Silver) Doug Drabek (coach, 18u Silver) Rick Krailo (Heat Director, coach 18u Silver) Ronnie Bay (Heat Director, manager, 18u Red) Mark Mangum (coach, 18u Red, instructor) Terry Loving (coach, 18u Red) David Frame (Heat Director) David Pounds (coach, 17u) Brian Podraza (coach 17u) Doug Groth (coach 16u) Terry Corrigan (coach 16u) Tim Fortunato (coach, 15u) Among the Heat’s recent draftees are first rounders LHP Scott Kazmir (NYM) and RHP Craig Whitaker (San Francisco), along with Atlanta right hander Trey Hodges. Other recent high drafts include 2B Josh Barfield (San Diego), OF David Murphy (Boston) and 1B Vince Sinisi (Texas). That list of first rounders is likely to grow this year. Overall, 7 of the Heat players were selected in the 2003 draft. Even with the accomplishments above relating to the draft, Cross appears to be much more proud of the fact that 6 former Heat players were on the Rice team that won the 2003 College World Series. The Heat have also had 21 players from the 2004 graduating class sign letters of intent with Division 1 programs, so return engagements in Omaha in June seem a certainty. They have hosted a Connie Mack regional the past three years, won the Texas CABA championship in 2003 and saw one of their 16u teams finish 5th in the 72 team 2003 Junior Olympics. The different Heat teams are organized as select tournament teams and aim to play approximately 50 games during the summer and fall. The stated goal of the 18u team is to advance to the Connie Mack Championships in Farmington each summer. The organization hosts its own tournament at U. Houston and San Jacinto JC each summer called the Houston Heat Summer Invitational. This year’s 16-team event will be held July 17-20. The Heat also hold showcase events at select major Texas colleges a couple times during the fall. The Heat have a great website at www.houstonheat.org for anyone wishing to find out more about the organization.

Asher Contreras (2030 | Las Vegas, NV) The 5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter and outfielder was one of the most dangerous hitters in the tournament for Wow Factor Nv 2030, stuffing the stat sheet while displaying an impressive combination of power and speed. He finished the weekend with 9 hits, including two doubles and a home run, while driving in seven runs and scoring five more. He also swiped three bases and worked three walks, consistently putting pressure on opposing defenses while showing feel for the zone with just one strikeout all weekend. Performance Baseball Rolls On

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

"Wow" Swings Catch Eyes at 16u Elite

Kinley Kitchens

On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

Following a jam-packed week of entertainment at the 17u WWBA Championships, the top nationally ranked program, USA Prime 17u National/Detroit Tigers Scout Team, faced off against Stacked Baseball 17u (No. 80 nationally) in the highly anticipated championship matchup as both teams looked to earn one of the most prestigious titles in all of travel baseball. Each talented squad entered the finale undefeated, but Stacked Baseball continued their dominance throughout the tournament, defeating the Detroit Tigers Scout Team 10-2 in mercy rule fashion to become national champions behind explosive bats and impressive pitching. Stacked Baseball was the overwhelming top team throughout the week as the WWBA Champions outscored opponents by an absurd 117-12 during their 11-0 run. “We got some talented kids, but we played against a little bit of Goliath over there,” Stacked Head Coach Mike...

17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4  Day 5 | Day 6 Shea Corona (2027, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showcased some loud stuff out of the bullpen for MLB Breakthrough Series 2027. The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk. The win showcased the balance that has made Texas Twelve Maroon a powerful team. Strong pitching, timely hitting, and steady defense all played a role as the team held off one of the tournament’s premier programs.
