AFLAC All-Star Game -- Summary

Over the past week, visitors to the WWBA site have been reading player profiles for the 38 players who were participating in Saturday night’s AFLAC All-Star Game in Ft. Myers, Florida. Those 38 players make up the 1st annual AFLAC All-American Team. The game was played with only 29 players (more on that below) and the final score (the East won 5-3) is essentially irrelevant, as it is in all but the MLB All-Star Game. However, the buzz from the talent, the national television environment and the charitable purpose of the game (all proceeds go to Children’s Hospital) left Perfect Game Director Jerry Ford calling it “The greatest High School Baseball event I’ve ever seen”. The players got their first taste of the real media world, courtesy of Fox Networks and their lead announcer, former World Series hero Jim Leyritz. Many also probably got their first taste of what role model charity work means, with an afternoon visit to Children’s Hospital. One wonders how many actually knew who Stan Musial, the guest of honor at the player’s banquet, was and what his role was in baseball history. The decision by the Florida and Tennessee high school athletic commissions to prohibit nine players from those states from participating due to rules concerning “in-season all-star games” was unfortunate and short sighted. Hopefully this sort of administrative self-importance will be solved before next year’s event. C Chris Kirkland and SS Cale Iorg from Tennessee and C Christian Garcia, C Alex Garabedian, RHP Eric Hurley, OF Steve Chapman, OF Michael Taylor, OF Warren McFadden and LHP Gio Gonzalez from Florida merit special mention for enduring the mixed honor and disappointment associated with the decision. Over 100 Major League scouts attended the game and the events leading up to it, plus numerous major college recruiters and 2,400 fans at the game. The rest of the country will be able to see the game in its entirety on September 20 on Fox TV. Ford had the following comments on select players in the game: SS-RHP Chris Nelson (GA): “Ran better and hit the ball harder than we’ve ever seen him do in the past. Didn’t play short because he tweaked his arm earlier in the month (when he reportedly touched 97 mph in the Connie Mack World Series) but looked like a big leaguer at second base. He plays so easily.” SS-RHP Matt Bush (CA): “Like Nelson, blasted a game home run off a low 90’s fastball. You have to love that with a wood bat. Shows a great arm and excellent first step quickness. You almost forget that he throws 94 off the mound.” OF Greg Golson (TX): “Ran the fastest and showed the best arm from the outfield, above to well above average on the Major League scale. He’s a world class athlete and has that aggressive attitude you love to see.” OF Michael Taylor (FL): “Didn’t get to hit in the game, which was a shame, but he’s improved so much over the past year. Another world class athlete with his size (6-6, 235) and speed (6.64). C Neil Walker (PA): “Walker may have opened more eyes than anyone here, not only with his bat but with his catching and throwing ability. He can really play.” C Preston Clark (TX): “It was fun watching a 5-10 catcher (Clark) and a 6-0 shortstop (Campbell) launching balls in the home run hitting contest. It’s a toss up between him and Walker right now as the best catcher in the country.” C David Armstrong (TX): “We hadn’t seen Armstrong much, but he showed a lot of tools. He ran great (6.66), threw solidly and swung the bat with authority.” 1B Tyler Beranek (WI): “Plenty of scouts hadn’t seen Beranek before because of where he’s from and because he’s had mono all summer. They all know about him now. He has as much power as any player in the country.” SS Eric Campbell (IN): “What can you say? 6 weeks ago no one knew who he was. Now he’s one of the best hitters in the country. Plus, he played better defensively than we’ve seen him. He must be working his tail off back home between events.” OF Dexter Fowler (GA): “He’s not hard for the scouts to figure out. He’s a great runner, a great thrower, a great athlete. Everyone will be anxious to see how he hits.” RHP Andy Gale (NH): “Gale didn’t have the best pure stuff, but he was probably the most dominating pitcher here. He touched 92, but his other pitches and his control are so good. He might be the most polished high school pitcher in the country.” RHP Mark Rogers (ME): “He “only” topped out at 92 mph but I’m sure he’s arm and travel weary with everywhere he’s been the last few weeks. His curveball was the best at the event, though.” RHP Jay Rainville (RI): “Very solid, just like we’ve always seen him. Sat in the low 90’s and had excellent control.” RHP Javier Guerra (TX): “Javi threw very well, hitting 94, and he sure gave Leyritz and the Fox crew something to talk about. It will be interesting watching his innings on TV and listening to them break down his delivery.” RHP Kenn Kasparek (TX): “Whoever has been coaching Kasparek needs some congratulations. He has outstanding mechanics for a 6-10 pitcher. His future is limitless.” Notes: The 38 players selected as AFLAC All-Americans come from 17 states. Texas (8 Players), Florida (7) and California (4) aren’t surprises, but Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Michigan might be. Throw in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Colorado and it’s great to see the northern tier states represented. OF Greg Golson had the top 60 time at 6.41, followed by OF Dexter Fowler at 6.47 and SS-RHP Chris Nelson at 6.49. SS Eric Campbell won the home run hitting contest with 7 home runs in 30 swings. C Preston Clark led with 6 blasts before Campbell stepped to the plate for his final round and sat at 3 long balls with only 5 swings left. 4 home runs by Campbell in the next 5 swings, the last one a huge shot into the palm trees in left field, ended the contest. 1B Tyler Beranek finished third with 3 bombs, including the longest home run of the competition. 12 of the 13 pitchers who threw pitched in the 90’s. That doesn’t include two-way players such as Nelson, Trevor Plouffe and Steve Marquardt, all of whom have power arms and sterling prep pitching records, but who just played in the field in Ft. Myers.

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

Kinley Kitchens

On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...

17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4  Day 5 | Day 6 Shea Corona (2027, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showcased some loud stuff out of the bullpen for MLB Breakthrough Series 2027. The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic. The uncommitted right-hander went three scoreless and was in the zone plenty, striking out two while not allowing a walk.
