This year's draft is less than a week away, so it's time for me to make my annual prediction of how the draft will fall into place.
1. D-Backs: Justin Upton-SS/CF-Great Bridge (VA-prep)
No surprise here. The Diamondback take the player that has been atop the 2005 draft chart for the past three years.
2. Royals: Alex Gordon-3B-U. of Nebraska
There are some rumblings that the Royals will go cheap here, but they simply cannot pass on a player of this caliber. If you're bad enough to be drafting here, you had better not mess this pick up. If they do go cheap, Miami's Cesar Carrillo is a rumored target.
3. Mariners: Troy Tulowitzki-SS-Long Beach State
If Gordon (or Upton) does fall, the Mariners are reportedly ready to pounce on either one. Otherwise, they are expected to take the player they have been following hard over the past month.
4. Nationals: Ryan Zimmerman-3B-U. of Virginia
The Nationals may go for Cameron Maybin here, but similar to the Mariners and Tulowitzki, the Nationals reportedly have focused on Zimmerman in recent weeks. Given his polished overall game, he could move up very quickly.
5. Brewers: Cameron Maybin-OF-T.C. Roberson (NC-prep)
Maybin fits the Brewers drafting philosophy perfectly, taking the best player available regardless of position. There are rumors that the Brewers may be looking to fill a void at catcher or third base, but they won't pass on Maybin here.
6. Blue Jays: Ricky Romero-LHP-Cal State Fullerton
You can be sure that the Blue Jays will take a college player, and they reportedly have been following Romero with great interest all spring.
7. Rockies: Andrew McCutchen-OF-Fort Meade (FL-prep)
If the Rockies are smart, they would keep drafting hitters given Coors Field. McCutchen has a good bat, speed, and instincts which may allow him to move up quickly.
8. D-Rays: Cesar Carrillo-RHP-U. of Miami
The D-Rays have been tied to Wade Townsend quite a bit this spring, but after lackluster private workouts they may be swayed to look somewhere else. They don't have to look far to know that Carrillo has had an outstanding, and somewhat overlooked, career at Miami.
9. Mets: Craig Hansen-RHP-St. John's
The Mets have been hot for Hansen for a while now, and if he falls in their lap they will quickly pick him. Hansen is so polished that he may be in the Mets bullpen by August.
10. Tigers: Mike Pelfrey-RHP-Wichita State
Pelfrey should be one of the first picks based on talent, but may fall just a little due to singability concerns. The Tigers are thrilled to take him 10th overall.
11. Pirates: Jeff Clement-C-USC
The Pirates have always had good depth at catcher. While this isn't a need pick, he's the best player available, and the Pirates need bats.
12. Reds: Luke Hochevar-RHP-U. of Tennessee
Like the Tigers, the Reds are thrilled to have Hochevar fall in their laps. This pick may be a stretch since the Reds probably won't make such a leap given Hochevar's likely bonus aspirations, but given their need for pitching they would be foolish to pass on an arm like this.
13. Orioles: Chris Volstad-RHP-Palm Beach Gardens (FL-prep)
The first prep pitcher to be taken, the Orioles have been very interested in Volstad all spring, and got the chance to watch him pitch well in their own backyard at the Aflac All-American Classic last summer.
14. Indians: Ryan Braun-3B-U. of Miami
The Indians reportedly want a polished, college bat, and Ryan Braun is the best player that fits that description here. He could move quickly, although people aren't sure if that will be at third base or in the outfield.
15. White Sox: Wade Townsend-RHP-Rice
Townsend's name has been affiliated with the D-Rays quite a bit this spring, but lackluster outings may cause him to fall to the White Sox, who are looking for a college arm.
16. Marlins: Jay Bruce-OF-Russell County (AL-prep)
The Marlins are expected to focus on multi-tooled, high school players with their three first-round picks. Few players have soared up draft charts as much as the talented & athletic Bruce.
17. Yankees: Mark Pawelek-LHP-Springville (UT-prep)
While there is some concern about Pawelek's signability, that probably won't affect the Yankees' decision, who need to be serious about adding more talent into their system.
18. Padres: Jacoby Ellsbury-OF-Oregon State
The Padres, like the Blue Jays and A's, usually are expected to take college players. Jacoby Ellsbury has had an amazing season for Oregon State, and could be the Padres leadoff hitter within a couple of years.
19. Rangers: Brian Bogusevic-LHP-Tulane
Bogusevic is rising fast, and may go earlier than this, but the Rangers would be thrilled to have him fall in their laps. While their pitching seems to be getting better, they really need to continue to focus on arms.
20. Cubs: C.J. Henry-SS-Putnam City (OK-prep)
The Cubs love high-ceiling players with eye-popping tools, and few players have the athleticism and upside of Henry. A two-star talent who excels in basketball as well, Henry has made it known that he will commit to baseball if a team commits to him as a first-round pick.
21. A's: John Drennen-OF-Rancho Bernardo (CA-prep)
Most will probably be shocked that the A's would take a prep player in the first round, but Drennen is about as polished as you get. While his upside isn't the highest, he has a good bat and loves to play the game.
22. Marlins: Colby Rasmus-OF-Russell County (AL-prep)
The second of three first-round picks for the Marlins. With Rasmus and Bruce they add two extremely talented outfielders.
23. Red Sox: Trevor Crowe-OF-U. of Arizona
I think a lot of people expect the A's to take Crowe a couple of picks before this one, but he falls to the Red Sox here. Crowe is a similar type of prospect to current Red Sox farmhand Dustin Pedroia in that he's short on stature but not in heart.
24. Astros: Cliff Pennington-SS-Texas A&M
The Astros are thrilled to have a polished, in-state talent fall in their laps. A great combination of hustle and tools, Pennington may not have a lot of over the fence power, but he has just about everything else.
25. Twins: Justin Bristow-3B/RHP-Mills Godwin (VA-prep)
The Twins love talented prep players, and they're thrilled to have Bristow fall in their lap here. The only debate left is to develop him as a hitter or as a pitcher, with more and more people favoring his powerful arm.
26. Red Sox: Matt Torra-RHP-UMass
This is a perfect pick for the Red Sox. They have always like drafting their own, and they have a preference towards college arms.
27. Braves: Cody Satterwhite-RHP-Hilcrest Christian (MS-prep)
The Braves love athletic prep pitchers with high ceilings, particularly from the southeast part of the country, and no one is rising as fast as Satterwhite is.
28. Cardinals: John Mayberry, Jr.-1B-Stanford
The Caridinals are starting to show a preference towards college players, and their system definitely is in the need for talent that can progress quickly. Mayberry's combination of relative polish and exciting potential could make him a gem.
29. Marlins: Brian Snyder-C-Westefield (VA-prep)
The Marlins continue to take prep players, and they nab three exciting positional prospects with their first three picks.
30. Cardinals: Mark McCormick-RHP-Baylor
Similar to the Mayberry pick, the Cardinals land another high-ceiling college player that has a few holes in his game with their second of two first-round picks. Few pitchers rival McCormick's raw arm strength.
