Cape Cod League Notebook: August 7

Jason Flores | RHP | University of Georgia | Harwich Mariners 



 Flores heads to Georgia this fall looking to reestablish himself as one of the premier arms in the 2027 draft class after showing significant promise during his freshman season at Texas. Flores posted a 2.78 ERA over 32.1 innings as a freshman before a limited sophomore campaign in which he logged just 12 innings. The stuff was on full display this summer, highlighted by a dominant five-inning, nine-strikeout playoff performance in which he touched 98 mph five different times. His fastball averaged nearly 96 mph throughout his time on the Cape, pairing the elite velocity with plenty of arm-side run to consistently stay off the barrel. The arsenal is backed by three legitimate swing-and-miss secondary offerings, including an 87-90 mph cutter, a 77-79 mph changeup with plenty of depth and the ability to kill spin, and a low-to-mid 80s slider that generated a whiff rate north of 60% over the summer. Both the cutter and changeup also produced whiff rates above 35%, giving Flores multiple weapons to finish hitters. The combination of above-average velocity, four quality pitches, and elite bat-missing ability gives him one of the highest ceilings in the class. If he can secure a weekend role at Georgia and rediscover the consistency he showed as a freshman, Flores has all the ingredients to emerge as a legitimate Day 1 arm in the 2027 MLB Draft. 

Tommy Goodin | 1B | Vanderbilt | Y-D Red Sox 

Tommy Goodin put together a productive sophomore season at Vanderbilt, hitting .287 with 12 home runs before carrying that momentum into the Cape Cod League, where he has slashed .313/.373/.508 with five home runs and 10 doubles for Y-D. Goodin has continued to trend in the right direction offensively and looks primed for another jump heading into the spring. At the plate, he utilizes plenty of hand movement and a pronounced leg kick, but everything works in rhythm, allowing him to consistently get the barrel on time while producing easy power to all fields. Goodin looks poised to make a significant impact in the middle of Vanderbilt's lineup this spring. 
 

Ty Thames | RHP | Rice | Chatham Anglers 
Ty Thames is one of the more physical arms on the Cape, bringing a well-built frame and impressive athleticism after spending the fall as a linebacker before returning to the mound at Rice. That athletic background is evident throughout the delivery, as he moves well down the mound from a high slot, utilizing a high glove side to create leverage and work downhill. Thames attacks hitters with a power fastball in the mid-to-upper 90s, pairing it with a low-80s curveball that serves as his primary secondary offering. While there is still overall polish to be gained with the operation and arsenal, the raw ingredients are difficult to overlook. The combination of athleticism, physicality, and high-octane stuff gives Thames considerable upside, and he has the tools to make significant strides as he gains more experience on the mound. 

Quinton Coats | INF | Cincinnati | Harwich Mariners 

Quinton Coats put together one of the best offensive seasons in Cincinnati history this spring, launching a school-record 28 home runs while establishing himself as one of the premier power bats in college baseball. The home run power has yet to show up on the Cape, where he has collected six doubles, though the underlying offensive traits remain evident. Coats possesses a large, physical frame and does an excellent job controlling the forward move, allowing him to stay behind his front side and create consistent leverage through the zone. The swing generates easy impact with the strength and bat speed to drive the baseball to all fields, and the power can show up in a hurry. Coats looks poised for another prolific power season in the Big 12 as he heads into the 2027 MLB Draft. 

Ben Reimers | RHP | Stanford | Falmouth Commodores 

 Ben Reimers brings one of the more unique looks on the Cape, utilizing a highly athletic delivery to create a near sidearm release that allows him to attack hitters from a difficult angle. Working primarily at 88-90 mph, Reimers leans heavily on the fastball from the low slot, creating an uncomfortable at-bat for right-handed hitters, while mixing in a sweeping slider with plenty of lift that plays well off the heater. The evolution of his delivery has been one of the more interesting developments over the past year, transitioning from a traditional over-the-top arm slot in 2025 to a true sidearm look this spring before dropping even lower to a near-submarine release over the summer. It will be worth following whether the new look sticks as he returns to Stanford this fall, but the athleticism, deception, and unique angle already give him the ingredients to consistently make life difficult on opposing hitters. 

Landon Beaver | OF | UAB | Cotuit Kettleers 

Landon Beaver carried a productive spring at UAB into another strong offensive showing on the Cape, hitting .288/.355/.505 with five home runs and seven doubles after posting a .310 average with seven home runs during the collegiate season. The left-handed hitter features a smooth, controlled stroke with present power, giving him the ability to impact the baseball to all fields. Beaver begins with a pre-loaded setup before making a simple, explosive move through the zone, allowing him to consistently get the barrel out front while maintaining balance throughout the swing. With a polished left-handed swing and power that continues to trend upward, Beaver looks poised to build on the momentum from his sophomore season and make another significant offensive impact at UAB this spring. 
 

Brock Ketelsen | OF/LHP | Stanford | Y-D Red Sox 
Brock Ketelsen continues to show intriguing two-way potential for Stanford, bringing a combination of athleticism, pitchability, and upside on both sides of the ball. On the mound, Ketelsen has been up to 94 mph with a good feel for pitching, though command was a challenge during his freshman season as he walked 26 hitters over 31.2 innings. The improvement this summer has been notable, as he has issued just three walks over 18 innings while striking out 24, showing better control and command of his arsenal. He possesses a good frame with additional velocity projection remaining as he continues to develop physically. Offensively, Ketelsen features a smooth left-handed swing with a good approach and the ability to impact the baseball, although he has yet to find consistent production during his offensive opportunities at Stanford and on the Cape. With his athleticism and progress on the mound, Ketelsen remains an intriguing two-way player with plenty of upside remaining. 

Jonah Barkoff | LHP | Oregon | Hyannis Harbor Hawks 

Jonah Barkoff brings a clean, athletic delivery from the left side, working with a simple operation that allows his low-90s fastball to play effectively. Barkoff pairs the heater with a curveball and changeup that both showed legitimate swing-and-miss ability this summer, producing whiff rates of 37% and 38% over the course of his 16.2 IP. After throwing just six innings during his freshman season at Oregon, Barkoff gained valuable experience on the Cape, highlighted by a five-inning shutout performance in Game 1 of the Hyannis playoff run. The combination of a repeatable delivery, three-pitch mix, and ability to miss bats gives Barkoff an intriguing profile as he continues to progress.

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. For the fourth time since its inception in 2023, two rosters comprised of the best rising juniors (and a handful of rising sophomores) will step out onto the field Friday afternoon, kicking off the All-American weekend. Pokers Rally to Capture 16U BCS Title A hot afternoon at JetBlue Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida ended in a 9-1 victory for the Original Florida Pokers 2028 National, defeating SBA Bolts Florida 2028 National on Monday to capture the 16U BCS National Championship. A pitchers’ duel kept the game scoreless through four innings before the Pokers broke it open with a five-run fifth inning. The title marked the Pokers’ second 16U BCS Championship, adding to the championship they won in 2022.
