USA Collegiate National Team: Stars

Quick Hits 
Each year at the end of June and beginning of July, top collegiate baseball talent from around the nation arrives in Cary, NC at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.  Typically, the rosters are filled with top underclass, non-draft-eligible talent but this year, we will see a sprinkling of upper-classmen as the coaches evaluate just under 60 players to get to their final 28 roster spots.  For a total of two weeks, the Stars Squad and the Stripes Squad will compete against outside competition in North Carolina as well as Virginia before finishing their slate with 5-games against each other at the NTC Complex.  Once the final roster has been announced the team will depart for Taiwan to compete in the 2026 World Baseball Championships, July 11-15.   




CNT Stars Position Players 

Anthony Pack Jr. 
FR / OF / University of Texas 

Coming off his incredible first year in Austin, Pack, the Perfect Game 1st Team Freshman All-American hit .355 with 16 doubles, 12 home runs, 56 RBIs and swiped 21 bags as well.  He was a major reason the Horns ran through their regional and super regional on their way to Omaha.  Pack carried that momentum into Cary, NC and has showed quite well, batting mostly leadoff for the Stars.  At 5-10/190, he possesses an electric skillset, with advanced strike zone discipline, uncanny bat head control and a direct path that allows him to backspin line drives line to line with solid present power.  Pack started the trials in impressive fashion by going 3 for 3 with 4-RBIs on a grand slam in Game 1 against the Greeneville Flyboys.  He would finish camp batting .277, scoring 3 runs, those 4 RBIs on his grand slam, adding in a triple and a stolen base, producing at a level that allowed him to make the final CNT Roster heading to Taiwan. 

Draft Outlook:  Day 1 draft talent in the 2028  

 
Derrick Pitts 
SO / OF / Cincinnati 

An impressive specimen in uniform, the 6-3/215 Pitts put together an outstanding season for the Bearcats batting .329 with 12 doubles, 6 home runs, 42 RBIs to go with 17 stolen bases.  He was an integral part of an offense that was awarded an at-large bid as the No. 2 seed in the Starkville Regional.  A plus defender, he can play any spot in the outfield and is proficient in working gap-to-gap at the plate.  Bat speed is present and as he learns to elevate the ball to the pull side there will undoubtedly be a jump in home run production.  Pitts was electric in his first game against the Greeneville Flyboys, going 3 for 3, scoring a run, driving in one, with a double and a couple stolen bases.  For the event, he hit .363, scoring a 2 runs, collecting 2 RBIs, with 2 doubles and those 2 swiped bags and made the final cut for the CNT Roster. 

Draft Outlook:  Day 1 draft potential in the 2027  

   
Gavin Kelly 
SO / UTL / West Virginia 

A Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American, the 6-0/180 Kelly was a driving force behind the Mountaineers record setting season in Morgantown.  They hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament on their way to their first ever trip to Omaha for the Men’s College World Series.  For the season he batted .382 with 21 doubles, 19 home runs and 63 RBIs for the team triple crown.  Beyond the offensive upside, part of what makes Kelly such an intriguing athlete is his ability to play on the infield and behind the dish equally well.  He got off to an incredible start to the trials as he collected 6 hits in the first 4-games.  Kelly’s strong showing concluded with him batting .261, scoring 2 runs, with a double, 4 RBIs and a stolen base, plenty good enough to be added to the final CNT Roster on their way to Taiwan. 

Draft Outlook:  1st round and potential top 10 pick in 2027  


Chase Fralick 
SO / C / Auburn 

The Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American took another step forward in ’26, putting together a career year and leading the Tigers to yet another Super Regional.  The 6-2/225 catcher batted .314 with 18 doubles, 20 home runs and 61 RBIs, pacing his club in virtually every power category.  He was also a stalwart behind the dish, refining his skills and establishing himself as one of the premier catch and throw prospects in the ’27 draft class.  While Fralick was on the barrel quite a bit, the numbers didn’t really back up the quality of his showing at the plate.  His final line for the trials had him collecting 4 hits in 18 plate appearances, with a run, a walk and 2 RBIs all told.  Fralick made the final CNT Roster and will represent the USA in Taiwan. 

Draft Outlook:  1st round and potential top 10 pick in 2027 
 

Ryker Waite 
SO / IF / Vanderbilt 

While it was an unusually tough year for the Commodores as a whole, Waite put together the type of season that sets the stage for a big 2027.  Only a year after being awarded the No. 1 National Seed, Vandy ended their season in Hoover, missing the NCAA Tournament.  The 5-10/180 middle infielder is an elite defender with plus range and smooth action with the leather.  The switch-hitter finished the season batting .305 with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs, 44 RBIs and threw in 13 stolen bases as well.  One of the more consistent performers in Cary, he produced in every aspect from an offensive standpoint.  Over six games, Waite collected 5 hits in 15 at-bats, batting .333, scoring 6 runs, with a stolen base, a walk, a double and drove in 3 runs.  Waite saw his name added to the final CNT Roster as they head to the 2026 World Baseball Championships, July 11-15.   

Draft Outlook:  Early Day 1 draft talent in 2027 

 
CNT Stars Pitchers 

Jackson Barberi 

SO / RHP / Florida 

Handling much of the high leverage situations out of the bullpen for the Gators this year, the 6-4/210 righty featured one of the most explosive repertoires in the nation.  His club had an up and down season and were playing their best ball at the end of the season, making a nice run in the SEC Tournament but ultimately lost out in the Gainesville Regional.  Making 19 appearances, he went 5-2 with a 3.13 ERA over 37.1 IP, only allowing 21 hits and accumulating a 55:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  With a fastball that approaches 100 mph and an upper-80 slider, Barberi has a true back of the bullpen blend.  In his first outing against the Greeneville Flyboys, Barberi accomplished one of the rarest feats in baseball as he needed only 3-pitches to register 3-outs in the same inning.  He made a total of 2-appearances, going 2.0 IP, allowing no hits, no runs, no walks and collecting 1-strikeout on 16 pitches total as he made the final cut on the CNT Roster.  

Draft Outlook:  Top 2 round talent in 2027 


Easton Hawk 
SO / RHP / UCLA 

A finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, Hawk was instrumental in the Bruins historic run this season where they won 27-games in a row.  They would go on to host the first round of the NCAA Tournament but failed to advance beyond there.  Handling an incredible workload, 6-3/210 righty would make 34 appearances in relief, with an ERA of 1.93 and a record of 7-4 while he locked down 14 saves and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 52:19 on the year.  His fastball will reach the upper-90s and backs it up with a devastating upper-80s slider and a curveball with plenty of vertical depth.  Hawk showed the ability miss barrels in bunches and filled up the strike zone at an elite level.  He made three relief appearances all told in the trials, going 3.0 IP, allowing 3 hits, 1 earned run, with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts for the week.  Hawk will represent the USA in Taiwan, making the final 28-man CNT Roster. 

Draft Outlook:  Solid Day 1 draft talent in 2027 

     
Tomas Valincius 
SO / LHP / Mississippi State 

The cornerstone for the Bulldogs rotation in ’26, Valincius earned Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American status and thrust himself onto the national stage.  He put his club in position to win most every Friday night matchup and was a catalyst for States run to the Super Regionals.  The 6-2/220 lefty is armed with a heater that will sit in the mid-90s and touch better to go with a dominating mid-80s slider and a changeup that was another plus pitch at times.  He finished the season with an 11-2 record, a 3.50 ERA over 17 starts, spanning 97.2 IP with an eyepopping 134:20 K:BB ratio.  Valincius attacked hitters with an elite blend during his time in training camp and did nothing to allow his opponents build a legitimate scoring threat.  In his two starts, he finished with 4.1 IP, surrendering 4 hits, no runs or walks and racked up a total of 6 strikeouts.  Valincius made the final roster, of course, and should be a huge contributor in Taiwan next week.  

Draft Outlook:  1st round and potential top 10 pick in 2027 
 

Wylan Moss 
SO / RHP / UCLA 

An integral part of the Bruin’s long run as the No. 1 team in the nation, Moss was kind of a jack of all trades as a middle reliever, closer and occasional starter for his club.  The sturdy 6-4/200 righty’s ability to give UCLA length out of the pen, kept others in their comfortable roles and this resulted in 52 wins before being eliminated in their home regional.  The Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American made 17 appearances, including 6 starts, with a 2.49 ERA and putting together a 5-1 record, Moss pitched 65.0 innings and struck out 76 while only walking 24 batters.  Moss showed well in both of his relief outings at the training camp and made a strong case for making the squad.  He totaled 4.1 IP allowing just 3 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 free pass while racking up 6 punchouts, 3 in each of his outings and made the final 28-man roster for USA. 

Draft Outlook:  Day 1 draft talent in 2027 


Aidan King 
SO / RHP / Florida 

The workhorse of a very talented and at times unpredictable staff in Gainesville, King took the ball every weekend and put his club in position to win most of the time.  The Gators looked like they hit their stride at the end of the season with a great showing in Hoover and they were awarded the No. 8 national seed before dropping out in the first round.  It is competitiveness and pitchability to go with raw stuff on the mound for the 6-2/205 King, putting his mid-90s fastball anywhere he wants and generating plenty of whiffs with his plus slider and devastating change up.  The Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American made 16 starts in ’26, he went 8-2 with a solid 3.21 ERA spanning 87.0 IP with a 92:19 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  In the trials, King made 2 starts and was every bit as sharp here as he was during the regular season.  In total, he pitched 5.0 IP surrendering 4 hits, no runs with 1 walk and recorded an impressive 9 strike outs earning his way onto the final 28-man CNT Roster. 

Draft Outlook:  1st round potential draft in 2027  


Tanner Bradley 
SO / RHP / Oregon 

Historically the Ducks had built their success around a physical, high-powered offense but that changed drastically in 2026 with Bradley doing much of the heavy lifting on the mound.  Featuring one of the best and deepest staffs in the nation, Oregon earned the No. 11 national seed, won their regional and ultimately fell just short of Omaha once again.  The 6-2/195 righty took the ball 31 times for his club, putting together a 5-1 record with an incredible 1.66 ERA over 54.1 IP while he punched out 84 batters and only issued 19 free passes all told.  He is armed with a fastball that usually cruises in the low-to-mid-90s and finished hitters with a seemingly invisible changeup that is effective against righties and lefties alike.  Bradley proved to be unhittable in his relief outings in camp, picking up right where he left off during the college season.  He completed 2.2 IP across his two relief appearances without allowing a bit, he only walked 1 batter and retired 6 via the strikeout.  Bradley will represent the USA in Taiwan, making the final cut for the CNT Roster headed to Taiwan. 

Draft Outlook:  Day 2 draft talent in 2027 

   
Camden Clark 
SO / RHP / Southern Miss 

As they seem to do year in and year out, the Golden Eagles hosted another regional in 2026 and sported one of the best pitching staffs in the nation.  The flexibility that Clark provided for his club on the mound was a major reason they eclipsed the 40-win mark once again.  With a fastball that sits in the 93-95 mph range, the 6-1/210 righty also featured a plus changeup that induces soft contact and helps his heater play up.  In 23 appearances, Clark made 7 starts with an 8-0 record, logging 5 saves with a 2.93 ERA over 55.1 IP and put together a sparkling 81:12 K:BB ratio for the season.  While he only made one appearance in relief at trials, Clark was impressive over his 1.2 IP where he struck out the side on just 21-pitches.

Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. After an action-packed week at the 16u WWBA Championships, the tournament came down to two of the nation’s top teams battling for one of travel baseball’s most prestigious titles. No. 5 ranked SBA Bolts National faced No. 60 Alpha Prime 2028 after both teams reached the championship undefeated, but the SBA Bolts were the sole team to exit without a loss, defeating Alpha Prime 10-2 in mercy rule fashion and capture the national title behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances. The SBA Bolts were perfect throughout their week, running the table and going 11-0 while outscoring their opponents by an impressive margin of 108-25. “It was awesome,” SBA Head Coach Travis Thompson said on the mercy rule victory. “It just kind of culminated our week. Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The barrel works efficiently through the zone and there is a solid offensive foundation present. After a week of competitive baseball, the ZT Select Prospects have been crowned the 14U WWBA National Champions, completing an impressive tournament run with a championship victory over Swarm Red Elite National 2030 with a final score of 3-1. The 14U division brought together 19 talented teams for a week of high-level competition, with players from California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania battling for the opportunity to compete on one of the biggest stages in youth baseball. Throughout the tournament, ZT Select Prospects showed consistency, resilience, and the ability to compete in close games. From the opening rounds of pool play to the championship matchup, the team continued to find ways to win behind strong pitching, timely hitting, and a complete team effort. With the 2026 MLB Draft in the books, our focus now shifts to a new group of players ready to take center stage as the 2027 draft cycle begins. Our initial 2027 Follow List serves as an early snapshot of the players who should draw plenty of attention over the next year. This new crop of talent features collegiate players coming off loud spring seasons, alongside prep prospects who have already flashed big upside as underclassman.  As always, this list will evolve throughout the year.
