Charleston Southern

The Buccaneers are coming off a 31 win season and a third place finish in the regular season Big South standings in 2025. There’s some key pieces back from that team. First of which is infielder Chandler Tuupo, a four year starter that has hit in the middle of the order the past 2 seasons. Another is outfielder Kain Collins, the teams leadoff hitter and offensive catalyst. He’s coming off a season in which he hit .356, scored 59 runs and stole 21 bases. He’s one of the conferences top run creators and will be a presence once again this spring. Look for a strong group of transfers to immediately contribute this season, juco transfers Gavin Speirs and Ean Czech are both talented offensive players with some upside. Czech was a University of Texas recruit originally out of high school. Speirs was a breakout player offensively in Texas juco baseball last spring and has some prospect intrigue going into 2026. Another transfer comes from West Virginia in Alex Marot, who played in 17 games for West Virginia last season and was a solid contributor when he was on the field. A group of returners and transfers will lead the pitching staff in 2026. The most experienced returning starter is senior Ryan Cole, who made 11 starts and threw over 60 innings a season ago. Mason Tibbs is an intriguing juco transfer, a notable 6-foot-6 presence on the mound who is coming off a standout sophomore season at the juco level. Another is Drew Dawson who was an all-conference performer at South Florida State College last season. Add in left handed reliever Tyler Henshaw, a 2nd team all-conference performer in 2025 and there are pieces to compete and make it back to the Big South Conference Tournament in 2026.

Gardner Webb

Gardner-Webb is coming off a 17 win season and last place finish in the Big South in 2025. They do return one all conference performer from last season in infielder Ryan Kennell, one of the better defenders in the conference who also hit over. 300 last season and makes plenty of quality contact at the plate. Another impact returner is Matt Ilgenfritz, who hit .255 with 8 home runs a season ago. And Merik Carter, a senior shortstop who also hit .309 with 16 extra base hits also returns. Those three will form a lineup core that will be surrounded by transfers or players that played in reserve roles a season ago. On the mound the team pitched to a 8.62 team ERA in 2025. However there are some talented pieces to work with in 2026. Junior right hander Jaden Stockton showed promise making 13 appearances with 4 starts as a sophomore. He struck out 31 in 28 innings and 8 of his 13 appearances last season were scoreless ones. Senior Devin Pressley has shown swing and miss stuff in his time at Gardner-Webb but will need to throw strikes more consistently to be a true impact arm. And a large group of transfer will have to make up the majority of the pitching staff in 2026. Many of them bring either previous D1 or D2 experience. For the Bulldogs to make a conference tournament in 2026 the pitching staff is going to have to perform at a much higher level than they did in 2025.

High Point

High Point put together a 39 win season in 2025, finishing in second place in the Big South standings but ultimately fell short of making a regional for the second consecutive season. The 2025 team was a force offensively, hitting .331 with 619 runs scored and 131 home runs as a team. Much of that offensive production from a year ago is now gone, a group that included 3 first team and 1 second team all conference performers from 2025. The good news is the lineup was so deep a season ago that despite losing 4 all-conference performers from last season, they do manage to still return 2 all conference performers in 2026. One of those is first baseman Landen Johnson, a conference player of the year candidate and middle of the order presence that led the Big South in RBI last season. Another is outfielder Christian Smith who hit .321 with 15 home runs a season ago. Both are key player heading into 2026. Look for senior outfielder Jake McCarter to step into a larger role this season after hitting 10 home runs in a part time role in 2025. One potential impact transfer for this spring is infielder Lane Allen who comes from Blinn College and it almost always a top level junior college program nationally. An unusual situation in today’s college athletics that High Point has is a significant number of returners that played part time to minimal roles in 2025. And it’s a talented group that will step in and earn playing time in 2026.

On the mound they will return the conference freshman of the year in 2025 and pitcher of the year candidate in 2026 Wade Walton. A 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher that burst onto the scene a year ago and made 15 starts while striking out 91 in 83.1 IP.  He’ll be joined in the rotation by junior right hander Dylan Story, who had pre season pitcher of the year hype heading into 2025. If the stuff ticks back up to where it was in the fall of 2024, he certainly has the talent level to be an All-Big South performer in 2026. Left hander Dalton Hitt made 11 starts for High Point in 2025 and has a chance to work as the third weekend starter in 2026. Another candidate to be a weekend starter is transfer Tyler Brachbill, who made 13 starts at Northern Illinois in 2025 and had 75 strikeouts in 70 innings. A group of returners and transfers will made up the bullpen as they try to make up for the production a graduating 1st team All-Big South reliever in 2025.

Overall, this is a team that lost a lot from a good 2025 team. But they also return several high end pieces for 2026. They’ll need some players to step up and perform this year that don’t have a ton of experience. But this is a program that in the last couple of years has established a winning culture. They seem to have player buy in and retention, and with that there will likely be another winning season, conference tournament and potentially a trip back to the NCAA Tournament in 2026.

Longwood

The Lancers are coming off of a 14 win season in 2025, a season in which they missed the Big South Conference tournament. They do have some pieces to build around, catcher Mikey Urbaniak made the Big South All-Freshman Team in 2025 after hitting .294 with 19 extra base hits. Jae’dan Carter and Tre Keels are two other returners with significant experience that should be regulars in the lineup again this spring. Add in senior Carter Newman and sophomore Mac Tufts and this is a team filled with experience and the potential to take a step forward in 2026. On the mound this is a team that pitched to a 9.49 ERA in 2025. There isn’t really a notable returner in this group. And that leaves the door wide open for freshman, transfers and a few returners who will have to take a step forward to make up the pitching staff and give the team a better chance to compete in games than they did a season ago.

Presbyterian

Presbyterian had a 17 win season in 2025 and made an appearance in the Big South Conference tournament. There’s an opportunity to take a step forward this season. They’ll return sophomore Matthew Rollison who was a full time starter as a freshman and hit .291 with 16 extra base hits. A big key for this years team will be outfielder Amman Dewberry, who has some of the best raw power in the conference and hit 8 home runs a season ago. This is a team that didn’t hit for a lot of power in 2025 and a new group of inexperienced players will have to attempt to make up for that this spring. On the mound right hander Tyrell Williams leads the staff after starting 8 games and pitching to a 4.85 ERA as a sophomore. He’ll likely be joined in the rotation by right handers Robbie Boykin and Tristan McGregor. Both earned starts a season ago and showed some flashes of being effective options. Senior Kyle Mueller enters his fourth season with the program and has worked both as a starter and reliever in previous seasons. They’ll all need to take a step forward but this group of returners has the talent to make it back to the conference tournament in 2026.

Radford

Radford is coming off of an even 28-28 record season that saw them finish fourth in the Big South and qualify for the conference tournament in 2025. They’ll return one of the more intriguing prospects in the conference in LHP/UT Breckin Nace. A second team All-Big South performer in 2025 after hitting .359 with 20 extra base hits and pitched to a 4.40 ERA in 45 innings on the mound. Infielder Hunter Keen was a first team All-Big South selection in 2025, he hit .315 a season ago and is arguably the best defensive shortstop in the entire conference. Keen and Nace bring significant experience back to the Highlanders line up this season. Sophomore infielders Noah Toole and Eli Hudgins are key returners that played regularly as freshman. A notable transfer for this seasons team is outfielder Devin Parks who played at Florida Southwestern last season and hit .356 with 7 home runs and 18 stolen bases. On the mound Breckin Nace will have a significant role once again this spring, likely as a weekend starter. Junior Raymond Ladd looked to be headed toward a breakout spring before his season was cut short, hopefully he returns to form in 2026. Senior Josh Milleville made 7 starts a season ago and could work as a weekend starter in 2026. Radford has the pieces to compete in the Big South this spring, if they can gets some players back and have guys take a step forward they will have the opportunity to compete in the conference tournament once again.

UNC Asheville

The Bulldogs and interim Head Coach Alex Raburn head into a 2026 season with a solid group of returners to the lineup. Infielders Logan Lowe and Patrick Gillen were regulars last season. And outfielder Jake Minarik who hit .317 and led the team with 9 home runs as a freshman is back as well. They’ll form a strong core to build around for this season. The major area for improvement on this team is the pitching staff. They pitched to a 9.31 ERA and had a WHIP over 2.00 as a team last season. And that included staff ace Clay Edmondson who had an ERA of 2.20 in over 80 innings last season before becoming an MLB Draft selection this past summer. Sophomore Garrett Crum showed some promise as a freshman and got some starting experience while pitching to a 6.11 ERA over 45 innings on the mound. Look for a group of transfers and potentially some freshman to step in and earn significant staff roles right away. For the Bulldogs to qualify for the conference tournament in 2026 the pitching staff will need to take a significant step forward.

USC Upstate

A contender in the Big South Conference seemingly every single year. The Spartans won the conference tournament in 2025 and played in the Clemson Regional. A mix of talented returners and transfers will lead the team this season. That group of returners includes 1st Team All-Big South selection from a season ago, Johnny Sweeney. One of the top hitters in the entire conference last season and certainly a pre season player of the year candidate in the Big South. He’ll be joined in the lineup by 1st team all-conference catcher Preston Lucas, a left-handed hitter with some position versatility that hit .337 with 25 extra base hits in 2025. Outfielder Henry Zenor made the Big South All-Freshman team in 2025 after hitting .358 with 7 HR’s and 29 total extra base hits. He looks like a potential budding star after posting a 38/19 BB/K in 2025 and then performing well in the Prospect League over the summer. Senior Wylie Waters is a versatile defender that can move around the diamond and hit 12 home run a season ago. Look for sophomore catcher Tyler Lang to find his way into an expanded role this season after hitting .370 across 46 at-bats a season ago. Look for NC State transfer Trey Bentley and juco transfer Maloy Heaghney to step in and play right away. Heaghney looks to be the everyday shortstop for the Spartans this season.

On the mound, there is a Friday night workhorse starter in left-hander Chris Torres. An all-conference performer a season ago who made 16 starts and threw over 80 innings on the mound. Another all-conference performer from 2025 is Max Bianchini, a highly effective reliever a season ago that could join the rotation this spring or will be a first option out of the bullpen. Left hander Max Kaplan started five games as a freshman and showed flashes of upside finishing with 9.78 K/9 in 2025. He could make a notable jump this spring. 6-foot-5 right hander Cayden Mackey has some of the best pure stuff on the roster and if he throws strikes more consistently as a sophomore should find a role as a starter or leverage bullpen arm. There are 3 intriguing transfers on this years roster. Wyatt Land transfer in from Georgia and Jacob Kirby transfers in from North Carolina; bot are upside arms that have swing and miss stuff. The third transfer is right hander Max Eichenberger who won conference pitcher of the year while at Georgia Highlands in 2025 and started 13 games at the junior college level. A potential impact freshman arm to watch is Jack Morris, originally committed to Clemson out of high school and spent the 2025 season fully recovering from Tommy John surgery. If he returns to form, he could make an impact right away.

There is no doubt that this is a talented roster that is built to compete in the Big South. There’s a core of returners that bring plenty of experience, there’s upside players ready to take the next step, and a group of new players that have the talent to come in and compete right away. This is a team that historically wins enough games every year to not only make the conference tournament but also win it and have the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Tournament. And that looks to be the expectation for this program once again in 2026.

Winthrop

The Eagles return a core of All Big-South performers from the 2025 team that put together a 31 win season and a 4th place finish in the conference regular season standings. Two of those all-conference performers from last season will headline the lineup in 2026. Gabe Natividad, a 1st-team infielder a season ago hit .347 and led the team in numerous offensive categories. He’ll be a top of the order run creator and should be one of the top middle infielders in the Big South. Josh Skowronski, a 6-foot-5 left handed hitting outfielder hit .305 last season with 13 home runs and 10 stolen bases. He’s a legitimate pro prospect that could easily be a 2026 MLB Draft selection with a good spring. Senior outfielder Ethan Wilson hit .294 with 10 HR and 12 SB’s last season and is another dynamic player in the lineup. Junior utility infielder Jaylen Hernandez hit .314 with 26 extra base hits in 2025 and will join Skowronski and Wilson to form a strong middle of the lineup. An interesting junior college transfer to the roster this season is 2-way talent Corey Wouters. An All-American at the juco level last season who hit .437 with 21 home runs and also struck out 51 in 40.2 IP on the mound.

A strength of this years pitching staff could be the bullpen, particularly the end of game options. Two-way talent Harrison Wilson was an all conference performer a season ago, worked as both a starter and reliever on the mound and is certainly one of the more trusted arms on the staff. Senior Ben Rehkow made 20 appearances last spring and is a strike thrower that pitched effectively to a 4.82 ERA and is certainly another trusted arm in the bullpen. Dylan Hansen, a transfer from Coastal Carolina is one of if not the hardest thrower in the Big South and could be a dominant end of game bullpen option. There’s several arms competing for rotation spots in 2026. One of those is transfer Alex Rosario, he didn’t get much of an opportunity at Louisiana last spring but really threw the baseball well over the summer in the South Florida Collegiate League. Casey Culbreth is a juco transfer that made 11 starts last season and pitched to a 2.05 ERA over 70 IP. Randy Guzman made 3 starts last season and has the arm talent to fill a bigger role in 2026. And Brayden Gilley who made 9 starts for the Eagles last season is one of the more experienced arms on the staff.

Winthrop will have one of the better lineups in the Big South this season, they return several performers from 2025, add in some transfers that won’t have immediate pressure to carry the offense and have a pre season player of the year candidate in Josh Skowronski. The strength of the pitching staff looks to be in the bullpen options, if if they can find some consistent starting options on the weekends this is a team that will certainly compete in the Big South make the conference tournament in 2026.

Brotherly Love Inspires Carter Hadnot

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – Perfect Game has been a big part of Carter Hadnot’s life since he was 12. He participated in more than a dozen tournaments and showcases, including prestigious Select Festivals as a 13U and 14U player, as well as last summer’s PG All-Star Game for underclassmen in San Diego.   The PG event that Hadnot always wanted to be part of was the DICK’s All-American Classic. Now, that’s on his resume, too. He played in the 24th annual Classic earlier this week at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. “This means a lot to me,” he said during the event. “I always wanted to make it to Select Fest when I was younger. So, every time I get invited to an event it’s an honor and it’s fun. I don’t take it for granted. “This is definitely the one I always wanted to make it to. A lot of big names have...

Scott Wins MVP Two Ways

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – When the folks at Perfect Game reached out to invite him to pitch in the 2026 PG All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors, Cullen Scott had one request. “You mind if I get a couple of at-bats, too?” Along with his dad, Scott traveled from the family’s home in Texas to Citizens Bank Park. The trip proved to be a huge success as he starred on the mound and at the plate and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Scott, 16, pitched a scoreless first inning and struck out two. In the fourth inning, he belted a grand slam six rows up into the left-field seats to lead the National team’s 6-1 win over the American team. “He showed us why he’s here as a pitcher and a hitter,” said Greg Sabers, PG’s vice president of scouting and showcases. "He’s one of the top pitchers here, but he’s too good a...

Romero Slams His Way to Classic MVP

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – Sunday’s DICK’s Perfect Game All-American Classic was a pitching-dominated affair until the bottom of the eighth inning when the rain started to fall at Citizens Bank Park and Koa Romero stepped to the plate and did his best impression of Kyle Schwarber. Romero wears No. 12, just like Schwarber. He bats left-handed, just like Schwarber. He’s got big power, just like Schwarber. And at 5-10 and a rock-solid 225 pounds, he’s even built like Schwarber. Needless to say, Schwarber is Romero’s favorite player. So, it was all kind of storybook when Romero belted a grand slam to dead center to cap off the scoring in the West team’s 8-3 win over the East club in the 24th annual Classic. “This is a dream come true,” said Romero, who was named MVP of the game. “It’s amazing to be able to put a ball like that out of a...

A Philly Dream for Steingall

Jim Salisbury
Article Image
PHILADELPHIA – Carson Steingall had been to Citizens Bank Park many times over the years. After all, he hails from Nazareth, Pa., about 90 minutes up the road from the home of the Philadelphia Phillies and he counts himself as a big fan of the team. Zack Wheeler is his favorite. Steingall realized a dream when he pitched from the same mound that Wheeler does in Perfect Game’s fourth annual All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors on Friday. The dream got even better when Steingall, a 16-year-old right-hander, was named Most Valuable Pitcher after striking out the side in the third inning of the National team’s 6-1 victory over the American team. “It’s just an honor to be here,” Steingall said after receiving his trophy. “This event is the best of the best. It’s really cool to win something like this.” Steingall, who’ll...

PG All-Star Game Heads to Philly

Jheremy Brown
