Down on the Farm: AL Central

It’s the time of the year again (i.e. the off-season) for the annual PG Down on the Farm feature.  We identify a top prospect in each of the 30 Major League organizations with as much Perfect Game background as possible and delve into that PG history for some insight into his development as a prospect.  Some of them might be high profile, high draft pick, ex-PG All-American talents who fans have been long familiar with.  Others might be more obscure prospects who have significantly improved either in college or as professionals.  Note that players who have used up their rookie eligibility are not considered.

The idea isn’t to necessarily pick the best PG background prospect in each organization but the one who might be closest to the big leagues.  Sometimes that is the same player, other times not.



And there is plenty of variation among organizations in their quantity and quality of prospects, whether it be those with PG backgrounds or not.

Montgomery was a very regular participant on the Perfect Game circuit in both showcases and tournaments from a young age.  He attended his first showcase as a 13-year old in 2017 at the National Underclass East Showcase when he was listed at 5-6/125.  He received an impressive PG 7.5 grade and the following report: 

Incredibly young player with a lean, slender build, athleticism, and room to continue to fill out physically and add strength. Primary outfielder, showed smooth actions to the ball and incorporated lower half into throws from a three-quarter slot. Arm strength up to 75 mph with good momentum and a long arm action. At the plate, started with an upright stance, open base, high back elbow, and a hanging leg lift timing mechanism. Simple, line drive swing plane with quickness to hands. Worked with a pull side approach and repeated swing well for age. Will continue to improve with additional age and strength.
After 18 months, Montgomery was up to 5-11/155 and playing above his age group and playing well at events such as the 2018 WWBA 16U National Championships and WWBA Underclass World Championship.  His first 2019 showcase was the Sunshine Gulf Coast Showcase, where the impressively broad shouldered 6-1/180 Montgomery received his first PG 9.

My first extended look with Montgomery came at the 2020 National Underclass West Showcase, where Montgomery threw 97 mph from the outfield, 90 from the mound and showed his tools and athleticism all over the field.  I was almost as impressed by my interactions with Montgomery off the field; he was a very intelligent young man who could carry a conversation like an adult and was obviously very comfortable in his own shoes.  And I did give Montgomery a PG 10 from that event and an invitation to the 2020 PG National Showcase that led to Montgomery playing in the 2020 PG All-American Classic.

Montgomery was also a top student with a scholarship to Stanford and an opportunity to play both ways for The Cardinal, so he was considered unsignable for the 2021 draft.  He spent two years at Stanford, hitting a combined 35 home runs and showing dramatic improvement in his swing decisions and patience as a sophomore.  Even though he threw in the upper 90’s off the mound, his two-way experience wasn’t as successful as he posted symmetrical 32 innings, 32 hits allowed and 32 walks in his two years on the mound.

Transferring to Texas A&M for his junior year in 2024, Montgomery took the next step on offense, hitting .322-27-85/1.187 OPS with an especially impressive 53 walks to 59 strikeouts.  That ratio had been 18:73 during his freshman year.  Unfortunately for Montgomery and the Aggies, his college career ended with a broken ankle on a play at the plate in the NCAA Regionals.

Teams were not overly concerned about the long-term implications of Montgomery’s injury and he went just about where he was projected to go, 12th overall (2nd college outfielder) to the Red Sox, who signed him for a $5,000,000 bonus.  Montgomery never appeared in a game for the Red Sox, missing the rest of the summer with his injury, then being traded with three others as part of the package for left-hander Garrett Crochet in early December.

2025 Summary
Montgomery’s first season in the White Sox organization was a rousing success, as he moved through three levels, ending the season in AA, was healthy the entire year and even put a cherry on top with a very loud Arizona Fall League appearance. 

2026 Perspective

The switch-hitter’s next development step is tapping into more of the power he showed as a collegian, as he only had 12 home runs in 500+ plate appearances in 2025.  When that happens, Montgomery will be playing right field in Chicago soon after.

2024 Featured PG Player:  LHP Noah Schultz
2025 Update:  Schultz numbers were down a bit in 2025, at least compared to his rarified 2024 performance.  He’s still only 22 years old with a very high ceiling, so the White Sox are hoping 2025 was just a speed bump.

Cleveland Guardians  --   LHP Parker Messick
High School:  Plant City HS (Plant City, Fla.)

Highest 2025 Level:  MLB
2026 Age:  25

Messick was a late developer on the mound and was as much of a hitter/first baseman as a left-handed pitcher up until his senior year of high school.  He got strong at a young age, especially in his lower half and was already listed at 6-0/205 coming out of his sophomore year.  Messick’s best performance at a PG/WWBA tournament for the Florida Burn was at the 2018 17U BCS National Championship when he hit .476-0-9 with 5 walks in 10 games and only made one brief two inning appearance on the mound.

Messick threw in five tournaments for Burn and topped out at 87-88 at all but one to go with a low 70’s curveball and change up.  His velocity took a step forward as a senior at Plant City HS and he led all of Florida with 125 strikeouts and finished with an 11-1, 1.06 record in 86 innings while earning a Florida State scholarship.

After a short but successful debut in the abbreviated 2020 season, Messick was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year as a redshirt freshman in 2021, going 8-2, 3.10 with 126 strikeouts in 90 innings.  He virtually duplicated that performance in 2022, going 7-5, 3.38 with 144 strikeouts and only 18 walks in 98 innings.  In fact, Messick almost allowed more home runs (15) than he allowed walks that year. 

Despite his low 90’s fastball and 6-0/225 build, Messick’s command and two plus secondary pitches as a left-handed starter were in demand for the 2022 draft and he was selected 54th overall by the Indians and signed to a $1,300,000 bonus.

2025 Summary
Messick was solid in 20 starts in AAA (5-6, 3.56, 119 K’s in 98 IP) but really blossomed after being called up on August 20, helping the Guardians earn a playoff spot.  He went 3-1 in 7 starts and 39 innings, allowing only 6 walks while striking out 38.

2026 Perspective
Cleveland’s deep core of 25-27 year old starting pitchers doesn’t guarantee Messick a starting job entering the season but he should be a front runner for a spot and a definite Rookie of the Year candidate given his late 2025 performance.

2024 Featured PG Player:  OF Chase DeLauter

2025 Update:  It was more of the same in 2025 for LeLauter as he was limited to 42 games due to a series of injuries, the most serious of which was a broken hamate bone that required surgery in July.  He has yet to play even a half season going back to his freshman year in college.  But amazingly, DeLauter did make his big league debut, not in the regular season but in the playoffs against the Tigers.

There are very few teenage hitters that scouts evaluate and simply say “He’s just going to hit” with confidence.  You might go a long time between uttering those words and for good reason.  It’s not something you want to be wrong about too often and the chances are that you are going to be wrong. 

Kevin McGonigle was one of those few players where “He’s just going to hit” was your first and lasting thought after watching him play enough.

McGonigle was a regular on the PG circuit throughout high school and hit a combined .436-11-80 in 113 games with an eye opening 58:20 walk to strike out ratio.  That’s 20 strikeouts in 113 games playing in virtually all of the top WWBA/PG tournaments across the country.  He won 20 All-Tournament honors in that time and was named Most Valuable Player of three events, including the 2021 WWBA World Junior Championships.

It was the same in high school in Pennsylvania.  In three years at Monsignor Bonner High School in suburban Philadelphia, McGonigle hit .498-24-77 in 73 games with a 75:9 walk to strikeout ratio.

This report was filed after the 2022 PG National Showcase:

Recorded a 6.56 second 60-yard dash time. Physical build with quick twitch athleticism and a compact frame overall. Primary shortstop with smooth hands and synced up upper and lower halves. Methodical actions with clean footwork and throws up to 86 mph across the diamond. Left-handed hitter with a relaxed and even start. Simple toe tap timing trigger with a short and direct path. Compact levers and controls them very well with innate feel and terrific barrel accuracy. Hard line drive contact to both gaps in batting practice with plus bat speed. Really professional hitter with good underlying batted ball data to show the power. Among the best in his class in terms of hit tool projection. Tremendous student. Verbal commitment to Auburn. Named to the 2022 PG All-American Classic.

The only question in anyone’s minds was about McGonigle’s athleticism and physical projection.  He was generously listed at 5-11 and trended toward thickness.  He ran a 6.53 sixty but was an average mover on the field with a negative speed projection.  His arm was a 50 at best.  It was the strong consensus of the scouting community that he would end up at second base sooner than later and maybe eventually third base or left field.  But that he was going to hit regardless.

McGonigle was signed with Auburn but was picked by the Tigers with the 37th overall pick and signed for a $2,847,500 bonus.  Given that the Tigers picked outfield phenom Max Clark with the third overall pick, it appears the scouting department aced the top of the 2023 draft.

2025 Summary
McGonigle hit a combined .305-19-80/.991 OPS, with a 59:46 walk to strikeout ratio, in 88 games across three levels ending in AA as a 20-year old.  He then carried it over to the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .362-5-19/1.210 in 19 games.  He’s frequently mentioned as one of, if not the top, prospect in the game.

2026 Perspective
With only 46 games in AA under his belt and a crowded win now roster in Detroit, McGonigle would logically be expected to spend all of 2026 in the minors, but he might prove to just be too good.  Interestingly, after spending all of 2025 playing shortstop, he played mostly third base in the AFL for the first time as a professional.

2024 Featured PG Player:  RHP Jackson Jobe

2025 Update:  Jobe made the Tigers rotational out of spring training and got off to a good start, going 4-1, 4.22 in 10 starts before hurting his elbow.  He underwent TJ surgery on June 11 and will miss a large part of the 2026 season.

Kansas City Royals  --  LHP Hunter Owen
High School:  South Portland HS (South Portland, ME)
Travel Team:  Northeast Baseball
College:  Vanderbilt
Final PG Class Ranking:  205th (2020)
Drafted:  4th Round, 2023, Kansas City
Highest 2025 Level:  AA
2026 Age:  24

Owen was a rare high-level prospect from Maine growing up and didn’t get out of the Northeast until the summer before his senior year, when he hooked up with Northeast Baseball and threw at four major PG tournaments across the summer and threw at the Area Code Games.

Not surprisingly for an extra big (listed 6-5/225 but appearing bigger) and relatively inexperienced young pitcher, which Owen you watched changed from outing to outing.  At the 2019 PG 17U World Series and 17U WWBA National Championships, Owen was outstanding, living in the strike zone at 87-91 and turning in strong starts.  At the WWBA World Championships and PG 17U National Elite Championship, Owen walked a combined 9 hitters in 4 innings.

Owen ended up at Vanderbilt and his transformation over a three-year period was amazing.  He was predictably not ready as a freshman, posting a 10.26 ERA in 16 innings while walking 15.  Owen struck out 38 in 26 innings with only 8 walks as a sophomore, then was a starter as a junior, going 4-0 in 12 starts with 76 strikeouts and only 17 walks in 64 innings.

The Royals like Owen the most and picked him in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, signing him for a $631,700 bonus.

2025 Summary
Owen posted a solid 2025 season in AA, going 5-5, 3.80 in 94 innings, striking out 107 hitters while walking 40. 

2026 Perspective

The Royals have limited pitching prospect talent in the upper minor leagues and Owen has both solid stuff and a track record of throwing strikes and getting outs.  He will likely get a shot in 2026 given normal big league pitching staff turnover.

2024 Featured PG Player:  C Carter Jensen

2025 Update:  Jensen hit .290-20-76/.878 between AA and AAA and basically didn’t skip a beat after his early September call-up to the fringes of the pennant race, hitting .273-2-12/.866 in 19 big league games.  He’s definitely the Royals catcher of the future and should split duties with Royals legend Salvatore Perez in 2026.

Minnesota Twins  --  OF Walker Jenkins
High School:  South Brunswick HS (Southport, NC)

Drafted:  1st Round, 2023, Minnesota (5th overall)
Highest 2025 Level:  AAA
2026 Age:  21

Jenkins began playing in PG tournaments as a 5-6/120 13-year old in 2017 but the 2020 WWBA 15U National Championships were his coming out party.  Now listed at 6-2/190, Jenkins hit .429-0-7 at the high-level event but it was more the way he did it than what he did.  I have rarely, if ever, seen as many staff emails and internal scout notes and shared videos about one “new” player than Jenkins generated at that event.  “Wow” was a common word/theme.

Jenkins then went out later in the summer at the PG Class of 2023 All-American Games and showed out again, generating this report:

Huge projection in the tall build, wide shoulders and strength in the lower half. Ran a 6.75 in the sixty yard dash. A primary outfielder, aggressive routes to the ball with quick feet and a powerful back side to produce big arm strength/carry, accurate to the bases too. A left-handed hitter, balanced and slightly open base. First pitch home run and did not stop. Anchors the back leg well and drives the lower half to create easy and loose barrel speed. Lots of length through contact helping with natural back spin. Premium athlete with highest level upside.

It was fortunate that Jenkins was able to establish his reputation with scouts long before the summer prior to his senior year and his senior year.  Although he was named a 2022 PG All-American, Jenkins missed much of that summer with a broken hamate bone.  And after hitting .527-10-40 as a junior at South Brunswick (NC) High School, he played in only two games his senior spring due to a hamstring injury, although he was able to work out for teams prior to the draft.  Nonetheless, Jenkins was ranked first in the Perfect Game Class of 2023 final rankings.

Jenkins was signed with North Carolina but was selected fifth overall, the second high school player picked after fellow outfielder Max Clark, and signed for a $7.144,200 bonus.

2025 Summary
Jenkins played at four different levels, hitting a combined .285-10-34/.850 in 84 games, mostly at AA, while missing most of the early season with an ankle injury.  He played mostly center field on defense, with short appearances at both corners.

2026 Perspective

The Twins clearly see Jenkins as a future cornerstone of the franchise and are rushing him through the minor leagues despite frequent minor injuries and solid but not spectacular performance.  Given their current Major League direction, a bit of patience would seem a wise to let Jenkins settle in and dominate a level for a few months.

The “In the Spirit of the Game” dinner and auction brought in thousands of dollars, all of which will go toward providing deserving youngsters an opportunity to play and grow in the game. Chet Brewer was not at the event – the former Negro Leagues star died at age 83 in 1990 – but his spirit was. March 3 Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Cider Canon, OF, Duke  The Duke Blue Devils (11-3) went through massive changes in the offseason, with a new coaching staff and heavy roster turnover like is often seen in the college game today.  That hasn’t held them back as they have kind of flown under the radar on their way to a tie for the most wins in the nation.  They won 4 out 5 games last week and Cider Canon was the driving force behind their offensive onslaught.  The 5-11/180 outfielder from San Marino, CA put together an incredible week collecting 9 hits in 14 at-bats, good for a .643 BA, scoring 7 runs, with 3 walks, 4 home runs and driving in a total of 10 runs.  After a successful couple years at Davidson College, Cider made the trip north to Durham and has fit right into the Blue Devil’s high-octane offense.  For the season, he is...

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Perfect Game Softball 16u Winter Elite Showcase, February 20-22, 2026. Twenty-Four teams arrived in Springfield for the opportunity to showcase some of the best talent in the midwest. After 3 pool play games,  the field was split and seeded into either the Platinum or Gold Division to begin bracket play.  With several highly sought after young arms on display, it was Indiana Magic Gold 16U Carroll and Indiana Magic Gold 14U National making it into the Platinum Division Championship, and through a mutual agreement, they decided to end the tournament as Co-Champions. In the Gold Division, it was Gts 16u Elite-Gonzalez with a 7-2 win over Cedar Rapids Blue Devils 14u, to earn the championship.
