College Top 25: May 5

“The highest peaks often have the coldest winds” and that seems to perfectly describe life at the pinnacle of the Top-25 poll this year. After another eventful and action-packed weekend, we will have our 5th team ascend to the No. 1 spot in the country in this week’s poll. It has become a war of attrition amongst the elite teams in the country, and the Georgia Bulldogs (39-11) emerge unscathed after a perfect (4-0) week remaining within striking distance of the top of the SEC with a (15-9) league record.

Our biggest mover of the week is the new No. 2 Arkansas Razorbacks (40-9) who, after losing 3-straight SEC series, dismantled previously top-ranked Texas (38-8). The Hogs are the first team in the country to reach the 40-win plateau and at (17-7) are only 2-games out of first in the league. The Longhorns drop to No. 3 this week after losing their first series of the season, while LSU (38-11) drop to No. 4 after losing their weekend at home against the dangerous Texas A&M Aggies. The Auburn Tigers (33-15) move up to No. 8 after their series win at now No. 17 Tennessee (37-11) and the Tigers continue to impress as they navigate one of the toughest schedules in the nation. The Vols on the other hand have now dropped 3-consecutive home series in SEC play. The No. 9 FSU Seminoles (33-10) had a statement series win as they handed now No. 10 Clemson (37-12) their second ACC series loss in a row. It should be a fascinating finish in the ACC as only 1.5-games separate No. 24 NC State (30-15) and FSU at the top of the league from Duke who sits 6th in the standings.

Outside the Top-10, No. 13 Oklahoma (32-14) has won 3 of their last 4 conference series and still have a shot at hosting the first round of the NCAA Tournament. While No. 14 Vanderbilt (34-14) took care of now No. 23 Alabama (36-12) in dramatic, walk-off fashion in Game 3 to secure their second series win in the last 3-weeks. There is only one new team in this week’s version with UTSA (37-10) jumping in at No. 21 as they have won 9 of their last 10 and are running away with the AAC at (18-3) in the league.
