PG Draft Spotlight: Jared Spencer

Jared Spencer

Position: LHP
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210
College: Texas
Class: Senior
Hometown: Centerville, Mich.

Frame/Delivery

Spencer has simply rejuvenated his stock in a big way and his prior untapped potential on the hill is coming into full scope. He’s long limbed, wiry framed and high waisted with some good filled definition throughout. Spencer is a high end athlete, working middle rubber with a three-quarter slot and a ton of angle with a hidden takeaway in the back. It’s deceptive and helps the arsenal play. It’s a bit of length in the action, but the arm is up on time and Spencer has simple parts with explosive torso rotation leading onto a firm lead leg. He’s explosive and turns and burns with loads of steep angle coming down the slope.

“Tools”

Spencer was a Day 3 pick with his pure stuff as a two-pitch reliever at Indiana State. Now he’s a converted Friday starter with a real mix and command under the tutelage of Texas Assistant Coach Max Weiner. His fastball features two distinct shapes well into the upper-90s. The sinker is potential plus ranging from 93-95 mph and touching well into 97 mph with upwards of 17 inches arm side and steep sinking action that lives at the bottom. He can also feature a riding four seam with a plus flat vertical approach angle in the 94-95 mph that flashes huge carry at the top of the zone. Both fastballs mimic well and play with his angle, it just jumps out of his hand.

His slider is one of the better offerings spin wise in the class at a hard 86-89 mph with darting action and plenty of bite. It is commanded to both sides and dies on the back foot. The spin projects as a real out pitch at the next level, and he also features a turbo changeup with heavy run armside upwards of 16 inches in the low-80s that can very well be an average offering at the next level. His command has taken such immediate strides that the starter floor is becoming more and more viable with each start. He misses bats but also pitches to contact very well and manipulates the zone as a frontline starter at an SEC program. That transition from reliever to frontline is eye opening. It simply cannot be understated, and combined with the pure stuff, the upside here is through the roof. His command and strike throwing ability, starter floor and pitch mix that plays gives him a ton to work with.

“Buzz”

Spencer is taking such strides don’t be surprised he’s amongst the conversation as one of the best in a deep college pitching class. His blend of stuff and command strides is so impressive in every facet. He’s transformed his profile while keeping his pure power arsenal from the left side. He’s an explosive lefty and continues to log innings at a high rate. This can be well into Day 1 territory and into the 2nd-3rd round at this rate. The floor of strikes and arsenal is that loud, and he went tit-for-tat with another potential first round pick to open the college season with dozens of important eyes in attendance.

Overall, Spencer is a pure octane lefty who has transformed from a 14th round round reliever last year to arguably the best senior in college baseball as a Friday starter for the Texas Longhorns. He has three now pitches and strike throwing ability that can bill into a starter profile. His development and transformation along with this coaching staff cannot be understated, and he’s earned himself a ton of draft interest for that very reason.
