Buc Classic Scout Notes: Days 3 & 4

Braden Booth (2024, Madison, Ala.) got the ball for Bob Jones and turned in a dominant performance on the mound. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher went six innings, striking out ten and allowing five hits. The most impressive thing about the outing, he walked zero. The fastball got up to 93 mph and cruised right around 90 mph. He mixed in two breaking balls, the curveball had good depth in the upper-70s to go along with a slider/cutter he manipulated shape and velocity on. The changeup was mixed to both right-handed and left-handed hitters at times. Booth continues to shine on the mound each time I see him and Friday was no different.

Collin Bland (2026, Memphis, Tenn.) put together a great showing in Hoover over the weekend as he was a force in the middle of the Houston lineup. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound first baseman finished up the weekend hitting .429 with two home runs and eight RBI to go along with a 1.357 OPS. The power really jumps off the page and he gets into it pretty easily. The left-handed swing is loose and he turns the barrel over hard as he looks to do damage to the pull-side often. Bland has become one of my favorite follows on the circuit and it’ll be fun to follow up on this look during the summer.
 

Mississippi State signee Henry Allen (2024, Auburn, Ala.) was one of the more highly followed players on the weekend and he showed a bunch of things to like throughout the event. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound corner infielder finished up the event hitting .438 with a triple and two doubles to go along with six RBI and six walks while also mixing in four stolen bags. The bat speaks for itself but the defense was as solid as I saw all weekend. One of the bigger plays was a diving play on a ground ball to save a run in their matchup with Farragut on Friday night. Allen continues to show why he’s ranked inside the top 150 in the country each look I get.



Stratton Scott (2024, Knoxville, Tenn.) was absolute nails out of the bullpen for Farragut in their big matchup with Auburn. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher got the ball in the second inning and turned in six innings, striking out seven and walking two in the relief appearance. The fastball sat in the mid-80s in the middle innings, running it up to 88 mph in the early going. He mixed in a tight breaking ball in the upper-70s too. He’s a strike thrower with good stuff and he really competes on the mound.
 

Cincinnati commit Gavin Brewer (2024, Knoxville, Tenn.) put on an impressive display at the plate over the weekend for the Farragut Admirals. The 6-foot, 195-pound catcher finished up the event hitting .333 with four hits over four games with two walks mixed in. The bat was solid in the heart of one of the top lineups in the country but the defense is what really jumps out. He has great bend behind the plate with excellent catch and throw skills that were on display every time he was behind the plate.
 

Lukas Buckner (2024, Knoxville, Tenn.) was solid throughout the weekend for Farragut as he sets the table nicely for one of the nation’s top lineups. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound middle infielder finished up the event hitting .286 with a bomb and four walks to his name. The speed plays up on the base paths and he showed soft hands at shortstop throughout the weekend. He might have to make the switch over to second base at the next level but that transition should be smooth with the amount of athleticism he possesses.
 

Josey Williamson (2024, Hartselle, Ala.) put together a strong weekend at the plate for Hartselle. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound middle infielder finished up the event hitting .385 with a homer, a triple, two doubles and five RBI. The stat line was one of the better on the weekend and the left-handed stroke certainly stood out. He recognizes spin early and has obvious twitch in the hands. He drove the ball all over the yard throughout the event, including a loud double in their matchup against Farragut.


Jacob Pearl (2024, Madison, Ala.) was one of the standouts from the High School Showdown earlier in the month and he continues to swing the bat extremely well for Bob Jones. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound middle infielder finished up the weekend in Hoover hitting .556 with a doubles and five hits over three games. He has great twitch and has solid strength to the pull-side that was on display at times throughout the event. He’s the prototypical top of the order bat and has just lived on the barrel this spring.
 
Ryan Wallace (2024, Lenoir City, Tenn.) threw the ball well for Farragut in their matchup with Hoover on Friday night. The 6-foot, 160-pound left-handed pitcher went six innings, striking out eight and allowing only two hits. The fastball worked in the mid-80s comfortably and it’s easy to project more down the line. The slider had sharp break in the mid-70s as well and he showed confidence spinning it in any count. There’s a lot of things to like here in terms of present stuff and projection down the line as he gets into the JUCO ranks.
 

Alabama signee Peyton Steele (2024, Decatur, Ala.) was another name in the Hartselle lineup that put together a great weekend at the plate. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder finished up hitting .357 with three doubles, a homer and six RBI. The swing is short and compact with obvious barrel skills to go along with good pull-side strength that he showed as he hit a liner out to left field on Saturday morning.

DEEP SOUTH REGION (AL, LA, MS, TN) The Deep South Region is absolutely loaded with position talent and would certainly have a chance to outscore any of the other Regions in a straight offensive battle.  And this trend doesn’t look like it’s going to change soon looking at the 2027 and 2028 classes for the Region. All the starting lineup, for instance, is made up of Perfect Game All-Americans if you excuse the recently re-classified Will Brick.  That leaves a pair of Louisiana All-Americans, Miller Sheets and Braylon Montgomery, out of the starting lineup.  Also missing is another re-classified player, Alabama shortstop Rocco Maniscalco, who has been talked about as a potential Day One draft in 2026. The 2026 class is one of the best in recent memory for the state of California, with 18 players ranking among the top 100 in the Perfect Game national rankings.  Three PG All-Americans, IF Trey Ebel, OF Isaiah Hearn and RHP Logan Georges were all edged out of places on the California All-Region Team as a result.  And although the 2027 class doesn’t look as deep, it does feature three Top Six players in SS Dylan Seward, LHP Jared Grindlinger and SS Carter Hadnot. Not surprisingly, California high schools are very well represented in the Perfect Game Pre-Season Top 50 rankings, particularly with 2025 Trinity League champion St. John Bosco beginning the season as the top ranked team in the country.  A very deep Orange Lutheran squad holds down the third spot in the rankings, with 12th ranked De La Salle being the top team from Northern California.  Corona (17th),...

PG Draft: Mid-Major Picks to Click

While Power 4 prospects tend to soak up the bulk of the industry buzz, there’s plenty of legitimate talent lurking at the mid-major level. These are competitive programs that are loaded with players who have real tools, physicality, and performance track records that translate beyond their conference. Below are nine mid-major prospects we expect evaluators to be in early and often on this spring. Ethan Norby, LHP, East Carolina (Rank: 155) Norby is an undersized left-hander, but has produced strong numbers over two years at ECU. The left-hander has produced a 3.80 ERA with 182 strikeouts over 149 1/3 innings. While the velocity does not stand out, Norby can still miss bats with the heater. It works in the low-90’s and creeps towards 95 mph at times. Quality extension for his size and high spin allow that offering to get on hitters, resulting in weak contact as well as whiffs....
