DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: Feb. 28

All three top teams remain the same in the small school divisions, although a case could have been made for a change in DIII, but there really isn’t anyone else worthy of the title at this time. JHU may have went 1-2 last weekend, but they still are the team to beat. Tampa and Southeastern, two schools separated by a 40 minute drive (although it's a much longer journey if you understandably stop at the Dinosaur World on the way), remain the top teams in their respective divisions. The Spartans and Fire actually met up on the diamond for a midweek matchup last week with UT holding on for the win. 

NCAA DII 

A little over ten years ago Francis Marion ended an impressive streak of elite baseball. They made three straight trips to the regional finals, consistently reached the 40 win plateau, finished in the top ten of the rankings and won multiple Peach Belt Conference titles. Since 2013; however, the Patriots have been quiet. They regularly have finished over .500, but well below the wealth of wins they compiled a decade ago. This year FMU is back to their old winning ways with one of the most impressive starts to the 2024 season. They’ve played three series against ranked opposition, and won them all.  They nearly swept UNC Pembroke last weekend, but the Braves won the finale in extra-innings. Nonetheless, the Patriots have made their second big jump in the rankings. After starting the season unranked, FMU is fifteenth, just one spot behind the defending national champion and preseason favorite Angelo State.



While there are enough accolades to go around, a special tip of the hat must be made to senior outfielder Zack Summerville. He is hitting .462 on the young season with eight extra base hits. On the mound Josh Adams and Chas DeBruhl have been masterful. Adams moved from the bullpen and has a 1.77 ERA and has held opposition to a .213 average over 20 ⅓ innings. DeBruhl has only allowed a single lonely earned run over 19 innings for a 0.47 ERA. 

The Patriots have another tough week ahead of them as they’ll host Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders advanced to a Super Regional last season and recently won a series over Barton who finished second in the Conference Carolinas’ standings last spring. 

Speaking of Patriots, UT Tyler rebounded from a slow start to the season to win a series against Angelo State. The Patriots scored at least eight runs in each of their games against the Rams. Lane Hutchinson was particularly impressive over the weekend as he had eight hits in 15 at bats with three doubles and a pair of home runs.

New to the rankings this week are Northwest Nazarene and Ashland. The Nighthawks split with third ranked Point Loma to start the season, swept College of Idaho (who just won two games against NAIA power Lewis-Clark State) and won three of four in Grand Junction over Colorado Mesa. Ashland started the season with a sweep of Concord.

NAIA

The Fire continue to lead the NAIA with a win over Point Park and Saturday sweep of Southwestern Assemblies of God. Over the next weeks their win total should continue to grow with a handful of cold weather teams traveling into town as a part of the annual Russ Matt Tournament - although one of their upcoming competitors, Bellevue, did beat them last year. 

Southeastern did suffer a rare loss midweek against DII’s number one team, Tampa, as the Fire traveled down I-4 for the contest. The Spartans held on for a 10-7 win. Only a single inning of the game was pitched by SEU’s incredible duo of Robb Adams and Darien Smith. Adams has only allowed eight hits and three walks in 17 innings with 16 strikeouts. Smith has 49 strikeouts in 30 innings. For just the first time in five appearances Smith allowed more than a single earned run when Point Point scored twice against him over the weekend. Despite the runs his ERA on the season is still a scant 0.90. 

One of the strongest starts in the NAIA belongs to Doane. The Tigers began the season with a pair of wins over Columbia and added another pair of impressive victories over Oklahoma City. They lost their opening game of the Wildcat Classic in Kansas City last weekend, but came back to win three more of run their record to 9-1. The Tigers’ upcoming schedule can cement their status as a team to beat. They play ninth ranked Missouri Baptist in back-to-back weekends and then #15 Concordia (NE) for a pair on the road. 

Doane’s Joe Osborn and Aaron Forrest have played as advertised this spring. Osborne is playing his fifth year as a regular and is batting .412. Forrest is the reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year. He has a 1.89 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 19 innings. 

Three teams joined the rankings this week: Freed-Hardeman, Webber International and Keiser. Of the trio the Lions have had the best start. They were 14-1 after the weekend, however they haven’t had too stringent of a schedule. That will change this week as they play Oklahoma City on the road. The Stars were the last team out of the rankings.

NCAA DIII

John Hopkins remains the number one ranked team, despite not looking much like it over the weekend. They won their season opening with a shutout of Rutgers-Newark, but dropped their next two to Baldwin Wallace and Arcadia. The Blue Jays should have an easy upcoming weekend with games against Scranton and Juniata. One the middle of March arrives, the competition ramps up with three contests against teams in the top eleven: Salisbury, Endicott and Wisconsin LaCrosse. 

Shenandoah or East Baptist weren’t quite in a position yet to stake claim as DIII’s top team. While Shenandoah rolled over Widener and Lebanon Valley with a total of 72 runs over four games, they could only manage a split with Misericordia. ETBU similarly squashed Sul Ross State by a combined score of 44-8, but those wins only pushed them over .500 with a slow 3-3 start themselves. 

Still not a ton of movement in the rankings considering the division’s slow start. Only one team has played at least nine games and five have yet to hit the diamond. With many teams playing spring break trip to Florida that should soon change.

With a postseason run for the ages, the Oklahoma Sooners (43-23) took home the National Championship and naturally finish the 2026 season as our No. 1 team in the land.  It is the third national title for the Sooners, playing in their 12th CWS and making their fourth championship series appearance.  They add to previous national titles won in 1951 and 1994 and did it by taking the most difficult path of any team in this year’s tournament.  In the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma took down national seeds, No. 2 Georgia Tech twice, No. 3 Georgia twice, No. 5 UNC twice, No. 7 Alabama and No. 15 Kansas twice.  This was the second time that head coach Skip Johnson has led the Sooners to the CWS Championship Series since 2022 and the first time he has taken home the crown.  The North Carolina Tarheels (54-14) was one win away from their first national title and finish...

Freedom Classic Opens Holiday Weekend

More than 30 teams from the 14U-18U age divisions will head to Fort Myers, Florida this Fourth of July weekend for the seventh annual Perfect Game Freedom Classic. The tournament, running July 3-6, features several nationally ranked prospects from across the country as teams look to compete for a championship. Headlining the field are twin brothers Derek and Ryan Yormark of Merrick, New York. Right-handed pitcher Derek Yormack is the No. 51-ranked player in the class of 2027, the No. 1 player in New York and the No. 5-ranked right-handed pitcher in the country. Asher Contreras (2030 | Las Vegas, NV) The 5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter and outfielder was one of the most dangerous hitters in the tournament for Wow Factor Nv 2030, stuffing the stat sheet while displaying an impressive combination of power and speed. He finished the weekend with 9 hits, including two doubles and a home run, while driving in seven runs and scoring five more. Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac. The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. On the second day of the 2026 Perfect Game National Elite Championship, one swing turned heads across the ballpark. The next one brought everyone to a stop. With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Following a jam-packed week of entertainment at the 17u WWBA Championships, the top nationally ranked program, USA Prime 17u National/Detroit Tigers Scout Team, faced off against Stacked Baseball 17u (No. 80 nationally) in the highly anticipated championship matchup as both teams looked to earn one of the most prestigious titles in all of travel baseball. Each talented squad entered the finale undefeated, but Stacked Baseball continued their dominance throughout the tournament, defeating the Detroit Tigers Scout Team 10-2 in mercy rule fashion to become national champions behind explosive bats and impressive pitching. 17u WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4  Day 5 | Day 6 Shea Corona (2027, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showcased some loud stuff out of the bullpen for MLB Breakthrough Series 2027. The New York native and primary shortstop topped out at 93 with the fastball, sitting comfortable in the 90-92 range. Corona paired it with a sharp and tight slider at 81-83, staying on the same plane until late. The pitch plays well already and the delivery is very athletic.
