Cisco Outduels Allie in Showdown of South Carolina, Ohio Best Arms

CHARLESTON, S.C. – When the schedule was released for the 41st annual Hanahan Tournament, a scout’s potential dream match-up of Stetson Allie and Drew Cisco looked like a distinct possibility. Allie, a righthander from St. Edward High in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, is the top-ranked prep prospect from Ohio in the 2010 draft, while Cisco, a righthander from Wando (S.C.) High, holds the same distinction in South Carolina. Both coaches for the nationally ranked schools were only too willing to accommodate the scouting community, and they saved their big arms to insure they would hook up against one another in a third-round contest in the 32-team tournament. All that needed to happen to make the showdown a reality were wins by No. 5-ranked Wando High and St. Edward High, a top 10 team in some preseason polls, in their first two games.

Surprisingly, both schools lost in second-round games. But with a luck of the draw, Wando and St. Edward still drew each other on Day 3 of the tournament – in a loser’s bracket game. And some 50 scouts, including a number of scouting directors, still got to see the anticipated match-up they expected as Allie and Cisco were paired off against one another.

Both pitchers performed pretty much as advertised, and predictably it was a study in contrasts.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Allie, the 23rd-ranked player for the 2010 draft according to PG Crosschecker, is one of the hardest throwers in prep baseball history, with a fastball that was clocked as high as 99 mph last summer. There are unconfirmed reports of his reaching 102 in the past. His first pitch of the game was 96, and he sat in the 92-94 mph range the entire game, occasionally hitting 96 several other times. He also featured a slider in the 85-88 mph range that often showed hard, late life, though it usually served as a slight change of pace from his fastball.

Lighting up radar guns has never been a problem for Allie, a North Carolina recruit, but throwing strikes has been an issue over the years. This day was no different as his pitching line (4 IP/3 H/7 BB/7 SO, HBP) left many scouts again shaking their heads. He went deep into the count on almost every batter and was likely well over 100 pitches when he was finally pulled after four innings.

A good all-around athlete and a power-hitting third baseman when not pitching, Allie’s arm worked well and he has a clean, athletic delivery. Scouts will question his command and the quality of his secondary stuff, but there is no way to teach the remarkable raw arm strength that Allie possesses. He has electric stuff that would profile very well in a bullpen role.

As tantalizing as his stuff is, Allie is no sure-thing to be a first-rounder in June. There are big-league teams that will be reluctant to gamble a premium pick on a player who defines the high-risk, high-reward quandary perhaps more than anyone in this year’s draft. It may, in fact, take a team with extra picks early in the draft to take a run at Allie, who has very limited experience on the mound and is prone to bouts of wildness. He can often be ineffective when pitching to patient hitters.

Allie is coached by his father Danny, who once coached big leaguer Johnny Damon and other first-round picks when he was the head coach at Dr. Phillips High in Orlando, Fla., some 20 years ago.

Cisco, meanwhile, has a baseball heritage of his own. His grandfather Galen Cisco pitched in the big leagues for seven years from 1961-69 and later was a long-time major league pitching coach. His older brother, Mike, has pitched in the Philadelphia Phillies system for two years after a college career at South Carolina.

At 6-feet and 205 pounds, and with considerably more modest stuff, the extremely polished Cisco is a near polar-opposite of the fireballing Allie in pitching style.

From the start, Cisco pounded the strike zone with a fastball in the 88-90 mph range, topping out occasionally at 91. He complemented the pitch with a tight, 11-to-5 curveball that sat at a steady 73-75. He also throws a nice low-80s changeup that is a potential plus pitch.

Cisco works with an easy delivery and a long, extended arm action. He comes from a three-quarters release point, and his cross-body action on release enables him to get heavy sinking action on his fastball.

What really stuck out about Cisco, especially in contrast to Allie, was his outstanding command and how polished he is for his age. He has the ability to pound the strike zone with all three pitches and mix them up at any point in the count, much like a big leaguer. There might not be another elite high-school arm in the country, in fact, who pitches with better command than Cisco, and there seemed little doubt that he has the polish right now to be a part of Georgia’s weekend rotation. He has committed to the Bulldogs, who have had well-documented pitching troubles this spring.

Cisco, who is the 83rd-ranked prospect in the nation for this year’s draft (according to PG Crosschecker), ended up throwing a complete game in leading Wando to an easy 8-1 victory. He improved to 5-0 on the young season with the win, and allowed just his second earned run of the year in the outing. His pitching line (7 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 9 K) spoke to his effectiveness, and only three balls left the infield in the entire game.

While he doesn’t have the electric fastball that Allie possesses, there is no denying that Cisco is the type of pitcher who could become a workhorse at the back end of a big league rotation. He should draw significant interest in the early rounds of this year’s draft, depending on his signability.

If nothing else, the Allie-Cisco showdown was another reminder to scouts that there’s a lot more to pitching than just being able to blow the ball by hitters.

Defensively, he is a plus defender at shortstop with soft hands, consistent actions, and quality range. Not only should he stick at the position long term, he should excel there at the next level. Offensively, there is a strong mix of hit and power potential from the right side of the plate. The swing is a bit unorthodox with a shorter finish, but Cholowsky consistently finds the barrel and drives the ball with authority to all fields. He has strong bat to ball skills with impact. Performance Baseball Rolls On

Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

The early lead gave the pitching staff confidence as they worked efficiently through the opposing lineup. “I've worked hard to get better at my game for the past few months; it means a lot that I did well and performed in a tournament like this” said Shindo. Starting pitcher Maddox Prones turned in a strong performance, allowing 3 runs while striking out 5 batters over 3 innings. The defense backed the effort with great plays in the middle infield, preventing GBG Vegas from building momentum....

With Wow Factor Nation 16U trailing midway through its matchup against Sandlot Scout Team 2028, Micheal O'Connor launched a solo home run to spark the offense. Just one batter later, Aaron Frink stepped into the box and sent another ball over the fence, delivering back-to-back home runs that quickly became one of the most talked about moments of the tournament’s opening days. Parents gathered along the nets, players from previous games stopped to watch, and college scouts turned their attention toward the action as the two towering swings energized the crowd and brought new life to the game. Although Wow Factor Nation ultimately lost 5-3 after a hard-fought performance, the back-to-back home runs served as a reminder of the...
