Regional Superlatives: Florida & Puerto Rico

Vincent Cervino      Jered Goodwin      Kyler Peterson
Most Likely To Make a Huge Jump in the Rankings in 2024:

Mario Magana, SS, Miami, Fla.

Magano had extra base hits in almost 20% of his at bats during the 2023 PG showcase circuit and his sweet swing and innate timing will only get better as he adds strength. A switch hitter, his left-handed swing proved extra dangerous during the summer. He can also spray the ball from line to line and has a very good run tool that should help collect hits against tough competition. The tools are just too loud to not think they will continue to carry in ’24. -Jered Goodwin

Allem Borrero, OF/RHP, Hormigueros, P.R.

Borrero has massive projection in his 6-5/190 frame and he already shows smooth and athletic movements on the field. He is also very coordinated for his long limbs and it could translate to either a power arm or power bat as he starts to fill out his frame with added strength. During PG events we have already seen him in the upper-80’s on the bump and occasionally tap into his massive power potential. -JG

Colton Schwarz, SS, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Schwarz checks a lot of boxes for a prep shortstop. The Florida commit is athletic with big thump in the stick that seems to show up regularly in game. The power comes easy, as he creates easy separation along with bat speed and strength. Schwarz produces loud barrels and extra-base hits often and expect the power to emerge even more in 2024. -Kyler Peterson

Kaden Waechter, SS, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Waechter checks most boxes you look for out of young prospects at 6-foot-2 with a true left side future given a very good arm across. There’s two-way viability here and he plays for a powerhouse high school program that should help him develop well. With more strength and size Waechter will be hitting for big power sooner rather than later and he already OPS’d near .900 during PG events in 2023. -Vinnie Cervino

Most Likely To Hit .500 at PG Events in 2024:

Brady Harris, OF, St. Augustine, Fla.

Harris is a well-known prospect around the travel ball circuit, even for the 2026 class. His blend of hit/power/speed gives him a great chance to put up gaudy numbers regardless of the competition. The projection in the 6-2/180 frame is easy to see and the University of Florida commit is also ultra-competitive. One of the separators, however, is the patience. He walks at a very high rate and that is a extremely important component with this type of superlative. -JG

Bennett Gary, OF, Parkland, Fla.

Coming off of a 2023 in which he batted .442 over 35 games, Gary possesses some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the class. The swing is super short, quick, and direct and he is on the barrel often. The Miami commit sprays the ball to all fields and can really manipulate the barrel. Gary is a classic top of the order run producer and uses his speed to get on base and use on the base paths as well. -KP

Mills Carillo, RHP/1B, Wesley Chapel, Fla.

Carillo is a primary right-handed pitcher but he absolutely banged all summer long finishing with a slash line of .396/.542/.491. He hits the ball hard with frequency and can use all fields to create backspin and with another year of strength development he should be hitting for plenty of home run power next summer. -VC

Most Likely To Make a Velo Jump Into the Mid-90s in 2024:

Aaron Watson, RHP, Jacksonville, Fla.

We have only seen Watson up to 90-mph to date but he has the size, coordination, and arm speed to make big jumps. The other projection mechanisms to consider is his ability to consistently repeat his delivery and release point. Add it all up and you have the type of functional ability to make a big jump now that the strength can catch up. -JG

Michael Senay, RHP, Orlando, Fla.

Senay impressed at a few big events in 2023 and topped out at 89. However, given the ease of operation and ability to hold the velocity late into outings, it is easy seeing that tick up in the very near future. Senay has a silky smooth delivery with a great tempo and easy arm speed. He has the secondaries to match and struck out 32 batters over 21 innings in 2023, allowing only 13 hits. -KP

Charlie Wilcox, RHP, Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.

Wilcox is another athlete on the bump that checks a ton of boxes with regards to his size, movement patterns, arm action, and projection. He’s touched the low-90s but has mostly been upper-80s this year but does it with real fluidity and ease to the fact that mid-90s next summer would not come as a surprise. -VC

Most Likely To Back Up a Breakout in 2023:

Gustavo Melendez, SS, Cayay, P.R.

Melendez is not a pop-up prospect by any means. But at 5-8/150 he can somewhat be over looked at times. The lethal left-handed bat hit .429 in ’23 with 14-XBH's and had a 30/13 BB/K rate. If drafted during the summer of ‘25, the left-handed hitter and Wake Forest commit would not even turn 18 years old until after his first pro season. This from a prospect that already hit .500 with a 1.333 OPS at the 2023 17U WWBA National Championship during the '23 summer. He makes it pretty easy for one to bet on to repeat the consistency.  -JG

Vincent Decarlo, C, Tampa, Fla.

Decarlo emerged in 2023 as an athletic backstop with power that showed up at 16U WWBA. Running a 6.74 at Junior National, he can run, and the agility and athletic ability show up behind the dish. The catch-and-throw skills are high end, using a quick transfer along with a strong, accurate arm. The swing is short and sweet, and he is capable of making tight turns. The hands are strong and the ball jumps with present pull side pop. -KP

Parker Loew, SS, Sarasota, Fla.

Loew vaulted his way to the top of the class early in the 2023 summer, showing huge tools at the Sunshine East and Sophomore National before finishing the year with an OPS over 1.100 with five home runs. It’s real bat speed with real athleticism and twitch and after establishing himself as a top 2026 national prospect we’re excited to see what he can do next year. -VC

Most Likely To Lead the Region in Home Runs in 2024:

Lamar Edwards, OF, Lake Helen, Fla.

Edwards has top of the scale bat speed and has not event started to fill out his broad shouldered frame. The twitch and athleticism stand out and the left-handed hitter has the physical ability to change any game on any single swing. Couple the Duke commits easy-to-see bat speed with another year of strength, he will be a must-watch in every at bat he takes during summer of ’24. -JG

Eddie Zaun, SS, Bradenton, Fla.

Zaun showed some of the best power in the class in 2023, launching four long balls on the year and batting .379. The right-handed stick has huge strength that was on full display in Jupiter, crushing three home runs over a span of three at-bats, with a combined distance of over 800 feet. The ball explodes off the bat and the swing is simple and repeatable. Zaun raked against good pitching as well as older competition in the fall. The shortstop is a consistent presence and extra-base threat. The strides the Miami commit made over the past year are significant and expect that trend to continue into 2024. -KP

Cristian De Los Santos, OF, Miami, Fla.

De Los Santos looks like a big leaguer in uniform already, standing at a very physical and strong 6-foot-3, 210-pounds. When it comes to BP there are few in the 2025 class with as much pure strength as De Los Santos and he’s got the ability to leave the yard every time he steps in the box; he’s a real threat to lead the region in HRs next year. -VC
