Cape Cod Notebook: July 25

RHP Aidan Moza, Harwich, Alabama, 2024 

After two shut down appearances, Moza allowed five runs in his third appearance but the stuff heavily outplayed his final line. He has a five-pitch mix and he sequenced them all in to keep hitters off-balance. It’s an athletic delivery with a whippy arm action and a bit of a head whack at max effort. He throws both a two-seam and a four-seam with purpose and commands the corners of the zone well. Both top at 95 but the two-seam occasionally is down a tick in velocity. His change-up is more of a velocity separator but plays well off his jumpy four-seam. The breaking balls are both great and induce chase to the glove side. Curveball gets more depth than the slider but bottoms out well with bite. Slider is cutterish at times and can act as more of a downer but will also get sweep of the zone. Moza only pitched 23.1 innings for the Tide but should fill a bigger role next spring.   



RHP Josh Bostick, Hawich, Grayson College, 2023 

Bostick had a huge velocity uptick and began to work into the upper 90’s in the past year and brought his momentum to the Cape to improve his draft stock even more. His last start before the draft was his best working 6 innings and striking out 7. He pitches from the stretch and has a three pitch mix although he is fastball-slider to RHH and fastball-change to LHH. His fastball started 90-93 with some 95s mixed in but slowly increased in velocity and was 96-98 in his last inning of work which was quite bizarre. Both his other pitches showed good potential with his change-up getting arm side tumble to play off of his fastball and his slider getting good late movement and bite. The Giants selected Bostick in the 8th round of the draft which was a few days after his last start.  

RHP Daniel Avitia, Orleans, Grand Canyon, 2024 

Avitia had an excellent start to the summer but unfortunately had an off night in his most recent start. He has a four-pitch mix: a four seam, two seam/sinker, slider and change-up. He lands with short extension and throws from a low ¾ am slot with whippy arm action. His sinker gets lots of arm side run and is the more effective fastball which is echoed by his usage of it. He throws his change-up to both sides of the plate including plenty of right on right which you don’t see much around the league. He hung one over the plate that got punished but its all around a solid pitch. His slider doesn’t get much sweep and has more gyro movement which makes sense for a supinator like Avitia, but the breaking ball is a distant third pitch.   


RHP Bryce Cunningham, Bourne, Vanderbilt, 2024 

Cunningham returned to Bourne for his second summer and has started off with three quality starts. His most recent one included zero walks which was a great sign of improvement start to start. He was mostly used in the bullpen for Vanderbilt with his fastball in the upper 90’s but has sat in the lower 90’s this summer with a few 94s mixed in. He shows great command of the fastball with a good shape that picks corners of the zone. His slider is cutterish in movement and moves enough to miss bats but averages a couple inches to both planes. His third pitch is a changeup with some arm side tumble in the mid 80’s. His delivery is low effort and repeatable with a ¾ arm slot. He looks the part on the mound and should slot into the Commodores rotation for his draft eligible spring.  
 

LHP Tristan Smith, Bourne, Clemson, 2024 

Smith made his third appearance and second start on Monday’s standalone game in Hyannis. He looked great and some scouts said it was the best he has looked since he was a well regarded prospect in high school. The lefty has an athletic delivery with a three pitch mix. His fastball has great shape with arm side run while also getting ride through the zone. He induced 8 whiffs with the fastball while also freezing hitters as it ran back over the plate. His secondaries lagged behind the fastball with his slider showing more potential than his changeup. He has worked up in pitch count in his first few innings and it will be interesting to see Smith stretched out against some more high-powered lineups.  
 

C Caden Bodine, Bourne, Coastal Carolina, 2025 

Bodine had an excellent freshman year for Coastal and has quickly become one of the best freshman bats on Cape, if not all ages. He has a slightly open stance with a big load where he really sits on his back side. It looks the same from both sides of the plate and he is able to tap into above average power with good barrel accuracy. His skills at the plate are improved with his excellent approach and plate discipline. Behind the plate, he is just as solid and is able to steal strikes with solid receiving skills. Bourne has a loaded lineup and Bodine was a priority to see this week with the noise he has been making visually and statistically.  

SS Jonathan Vastine, Bourne. Vanderbilt 2024 

Vastine started the spring with a hot bat and playing second base every day, the bat slowed down a bit but he showed his excellent defensive skills at shortstop. He is an extremely twitchy athlete with lightning quick hands. He has an open stance with a closed front hip and uses a very small load to create a simple and effective operation at the plate. There is some swing and miss to his game but his hands are quick and accurate to help Vastine get his barrel to the ball all around the zone. He is a plus to potentially plus-plus runner and has good footwork in the infield. His range is impressive and the few plays he does not make in the infield, are probably easy hits with other infielders. With Vastine, Diaz and RJ Austin, the Vanderbilt infield can be extremely impressive in this upcoming spring.  
 

IF Davis Diaz, Brewster, Vanderbilt, 2024 

Diaz notoriously turned down a lot of money out of high school to make it to Nashville and proceeded to have a slow offensive year both at school and with Brewster. He took a big step this year, now playing more 3B, and is back in Brewster hoping to continue his improvement. He has a slightly open stance with a small load mostly using his hips and keeps his hands quiet. He is a polished defender and continues to impress even now at 3B where his above average to plus arm can shine. He has a hit over power profile but has started to tap into more pop and drive the ball into the gaps with four doubles already this summer. A big name for the 2024 draft that has immense potential and has gradually shown more and more on the field.  

OF Josh Pearson, Brewster, LSU, 2024 

Pearson was with Cotuit last summer and had a tall task to compete for a spot in the stacked LSU lineup but he managed to play a big role in the College World Series. He rode the National Championship high into Brewster and is off to a hot start through 6 games hitting .350 with a home run and four stolen bases. He has an even stance with high hands and has shown great feel to hit and has consistently barreled up baseballs. He slots into a corner outfield spot defensively with a fringy arm but has been extremely valuable on the base paths. He has below average speed but shows strong instincts on the base paths. LSU will likely field another roster next spring and Pearson has the chance to play his way into an everyday role for the Tigers.  

1B/RHP Cole Mathis, Cotuit, College of Charleston, 2024 

Mathis has really impressed at the plate this summer and that is while also throwing 17 innings on the mound. I have yet to see him pitch live but he uses a four pitch mix that features a mid 90’s fastball, two breaking balls and a change-up. He hit his fifth home run Thursday and taps into his plus raw power consistently in game. He has a simple operation at the plate with a wide, even stance and low handset. Mathis is mainly a 1B when not on the mound but has gotten some playing time on the outfield where his arm will play but lacks speed and range. Defensive value aside, Mathis shows an advanced approach and feel for the barrel and has shown so far this summer that his talent expands beyond CAA pitching.

MLK West Scout Notes: Days 1-2 Markus Chandler, RHP, Westside HS Class of 2027 A little on the undersized side as a sub 6 footer, but Chandler can generate some velo and spin.  Spun 3 frames of hitless ball for Spects National with zero walks and 6 strikeouts.  Committed to Kansas State, the righty ran the fastball to 92, living 89-92 pumping the zone with 75 percent strikes.  Looked like two different breaking balls, with the SL 80/81 (spin in 2500’s) and curveball 75/76.  No hard contact, little contact at all off the righty in this dominant outing.
