Artillery, BPA Share Sophomore World Title

FORT MYERS, Fla. – BPA and Artillery 2025 Scout Team took different paths in meeting for the championship game at the WWBA Sophomore World Championship.

In the seven games leading up to the title bout, BPA didn’t have to sweat much in the Florida heat, putting together a 79-18 run differential. Artillery’s differential was 39-15, winning six of their seven games by three runs or less.



Regardless of path, both teams entered the championship game battle-tested and hardened. The result was both squads refusing to lose, and by the time the horn went off and flights needed to be caught, BPA and Artillery were named co-champs of the WWBA Sophomore World Championship after playing to a 5-5 tie.

It was a back-and-forth contest, appropriate for two teams who came into the game playing as well as they were. Artillery scored the first two runs of the game, one run in the top of the first and another in the third.

A two-out rally broke the seal on the game in the first. Taylor Tracey, Cole Huett, and Thomas O’Connell singled in back-to-back-to-back at-bats with two outs, with O’Connell’s knock scoring Tracey. All three hitters ended the day 2-for-4, with O’Connell driving in the run in the third inning as well and giving his team a 2-0 lead.

That lead didn’t last the next half inning, though, as BPA put a four-spot on the scoreboard in their half of the third.

Billy Carlson walked and stole second to light the fire, and Brandon De Goti singled him home one pitch later to put BPA on the board. Seth Hernandez doubled to left field to score De Goti and force a pitching change, which was followed with a two-run big fly by Kelven Perera Arellano to give BPA the lead at 4-2.



Another two-out rally gave Artillery the lead again in the sixth inning. Nicky Becker battled his way to an eight-pitch walk to extend the inning, and Ben Peterson followed Becker up with a free pass of his own. Ryan Walsh then sent the first pitch he saw into left field to score Becker and put Artillery within one at 4-3, and Dominic Woodward’s two-RBI single into center field gave Artillery a 5-4 advantage.

BPA gave Artillery a taste of their own medicine in the bottom half of the sixth. After two quick outs to start the inning, Gardner Young, William Mencho, and Carlson found their way on base to load the bases, allowing De Goti to work a walk and push across the tying run.

De Goti was named the MVP of the WWBA Sophomore World Championship. Across his eight games, De Goti hit .571 with 12 hits, 12 runs, and 10 RBI, while walking seven times and also stealing four bases.

Artillery’s Ryan Walsh was named MV-Pitcher. In Round 2 of the playoffs, Walsh gave his team a complete game shutout in an extra innings contest, willing Artillery to a 2-0 victory to move on to Round 3. Walsh struck out nine in the game, allowing just one hit and no walks.

A tightly contested battle between Canes Florida 2029 and Florida Flames 16u capped the 16U Florida Elite Championship, with the Canes earning a 6-5 walk-off win on Monday at JetBlue Park Stadium. “It means a lot to this team specifically because this is their first win as a group,” Canes head coach Alec Bettinger said. “We’ve come up short a couple times, so seeing one go through the hoop here is really nice for the boys.” The Canes defense came out hot, led by Cannon Tyler who started on the mound for the Canes.
