13u WWBA Scout Notes: Days 1-2

Given the weather on day one, Sunday served as the unofficial opening day of the tournament as teams across the tournament were able to take the field for the first time in West Palm, which means teams closely monitored pitch counts to ensure another outing later this week.

Starting with a prospect from the West Coast, left-hander Logan Schmidt (2027, Villa Park, Calif.) got the start in game two for BPA, and like others, was on a strict pitch count though that didn’t deter the 6-foot-1 southpaw from opening eyes. Though the final line shows some scattering around the zone with 2 free passes in 1 1/3 innings of work, Schmidt’s misses were still around the zone and when he was in the zone, it proved to not be a fun at-bat for opposing hitters.

Despite the age/length combo I often mention in these types of recaps with younger arms, Schmidt’s delivery is a simpler one with limited moving parts, which in turn leads for some really high stuff in the zone. The arm action itself is a shorter one through the backside with plenty of quickness as evidenced by the fastball he was able to show, peaking at 88 mph in the first inning while showing a barrage of pitches in the 84-87 mph range. It is a bit of a shorter stride coming down the mound and that may have affected his timing, but it also helps aid in the hard, late sinking life on the fastball which allows the pitch to play up even more. The fastball life Schmidt is able to consistently generate on the pitch can’t be understated, though the number on the radar gun certainly drew in a crowd. Given the brevity of the look Schmidt didn’t need much more than his fastball though he did drop in a curveball at 68 mph for a check swing strikeout, one of his two on the day.
