Showdown Academies Scout Notes: Days 1-2

Chase Horst (2022, Manheim, Pa.) made an absolute statement on Sunday afternoon when the left-hander came in for his two innings of relief in the championship game. The Charleston Southern commit came out throwing bullets, with his first pitch registering at 93 mph before he bumped two 95s in the first inning of work. He also showed a big, sweeping slider that he would throw to both left-handed and right-handed hitters while starting in the zone and breaking it to the dirt on the glove side for a swing-and-miss. In the second inning of work, he sat 90-93 mph but broke out a changeup at 76 mph that pulled the breaks on the hitter, causing him to be way out front as he geared up for a heater. This type of velocity is not something you find everyday coming out of the bullpen in a high school baseball game and will definitely be something to keep an eye on over the next few months.

It didn’t matter if the pitcher was throwing in the low-90s or low-80s, Phelps was on it and hitting it hard. His four hits on Sunday were just the cherry on top of a week where he hit over .600 in seven games with two home runs and 18 runs driven in. The Georgia commit ended up with the tournament MVP after his impressive numbers, and rightfully so, as he finished the weekend as the top hitter in the tournament.
