26. Yavapai

One of the year-in and year-out contenders out West in what is always an extremely contentious Arizona JUCO schedule, Yavapai just missed the Top 25 but will bring a very competitive team to the diamond this spring. The outfield is especially deep and especially talented, with three veterans projected to start. Sean Rimmer, Amari Bartee, and Ryland Zaborowski make up one of JUCO’s best outfield trios from an overall production standpoint, and they should make up the middle of the order as well. True freshman Alex Ulloa will likely start at third base, and the coaching staff is really excited about sophomore catcher Alton Gyselman. On the mound, both Matt Bachelier and Tyler Davis return and will be two of the club’s bigger arms with high-octane stuff that can play in any role. As far as freshmen, watch out for Barrett Skaugrud and Ben Ziegler; both are true two-way talents who will contribute both ways this spring.

27. Eastern Oklahoma State

Eastern Oklahoma is going to have to replace the potentially once-in-a-generation pitching rotation that they had last year, which featured Christian McGowan (7th round - 2021 Draft), Andrew Walling (key piece at Mississippi State), and David Sandlin (key piece at Oklahoma). That will start with Nate Ackenhausen, a left-hander committed to LSU. He’ll lead the staff and is joined by Easten James, a former two-way who is focusing on pitching this spring. He’s a veteran with lots of experience and will be counted on in a big way. Christian Clack, Matthew Watson, and Caleb White, along with others, will also help on the staff. Offensively, Jonah Cox is expected to be a huge piece atop the lineup along with switch-hitting catcher Parker Rowland, freshman Adam Moser, and outfielder Drake Kerr. This is an athletic club who, while certainly missing the Big 3 detailed above, may even have more depth on the mound that last year’s iteration.

28. Southern Nevada

Putting up big run totals will be nothing new in the desert for CSN and could be the key to reclaiming their spot atop Region 18 once again this season. Freshman Jackson Castillo and Bradley Stone appear to be two youngsters they are comfortable trusting near the top of the order to get on base. Fellow freshman catcher Mayze Mosher will bring some thump to the lineup, as will Gavin Amelburu with his ability to work from gap-to-gap.

The rotation looks pretty firm with Calvin Marley, Sayer Diederich, Austin Cates and Devin Contreras Jr. all looking like guys who can eat up some innings before the ball gets turned over to some talented bullpen arms. Out of the ‘pen, two-way standout Trey Frahm will see his fair share of innings as should Kris Bow and Zach Czerniawski.

29. Indian Hills

After his first trip to Grand Junction with Indian Hills, Head Coach Matt Torrez is excited about the type of competitors he has coming back on the mound, with a plethora of guys who are going to throw strikes in the upper-80s to low-90s. Jack Payne seems like the chalked-in day one guy on the mound but behind that the depth on the hill starts with guys like Jack Nelson, Gavin Hinckley, and Arturo Rodriguez. They are just some of the guys who could all fill a starting role for the Warriors. At the back end of the bullpen, Dade Hensley is set for the closer role with his ability to give hitters a tough look while sitting in the upper-80s.

At the plate, top returning bat Ricardo Van Grieken will need to be a guy the Warriors can count on to drive in runs as they see some turnover in the middle of the lineup. Two freshmen to keep an eye on, as both have track speed and could take over games on both sides of the ball, are James Dutton and Daniel Figueroa.

30. Wallace-Dothan

The Govs could have the early favorite for Pitcher of the Year in Region 22 with their ace and Florida commit Clete Hartzog. Hartzog is back after almost 80 innings as a freshman and more than a strikeout per inning, with the fastball getting into the mid-90s. Behind that, Coach Sasser and his staff will look for guys like Kade Snell to fill some big innings, along with Dakota Copeland and Carlos Nolasco, who will rely on a fastball-breaking ball combo to keep hitters off balance.

Across the infield, Coach Sasser has as talented of a defense as any in the country. Giuseppe Feraro will pencil in at shortstop on Opening Day as one of the better gloves in the Southeast. Joining Feraro up the middle will be Ethan Kavanagh, who’s back after a Freshman All-American year in 2021. At the hot corner, Chaz Salter returns and will be back in the middle of the lineup where his bat can do the most damage for the Govs.

31. Santa Rosa

Something we’ve prided ourselves on within the JUCO coverage here at PG is the inclusion of the California schools in our overall rankings, as California operates in it’s own league outside of the NJCAA, to try and shine a light on just how extremely talented Cali JUCO baseball is. Santa Rosa in the North is no exception, a perennial power that has been for some time now. Jared Sundstrom and Cal signee Max Handron are both returning players who figure to be key cogs in the everyday lineup, along with infielder Noah Rabin and catcher Colton Lomanto. Right-hander Tyler Stasiowski likely gets the ball on Opening Day and should lead the rotation, with sophomores Jack Cazin, Tyler Hellums, and two-way player Connor Charpiot also expected to be major keys to the pitching staff. Santa Rosa is consistently at or near the top of the pack in NorCal, and we don’t expect this season to be any different in that regard.

32. College of Central Florida

Florida is absolutely no joke when it comes to JUCO baseball, with any number of high-powered, talented clubs across the state’s two regions. CCF is certainly no exception to that, and Head Coach Marty Smith expects this year’s club to be no different. Veteran lefty Parker Seay likely heads the rotation for the Pats, joined by freshman Connor Godwin and transfer Aaron Combs, who is already committed to Tennessee to continue his college career. Lefty Mason Ronan is back following injury with premium stuff in the backend, with Sam Swygart and Ben Chestnutt projected to lock down games as well. Positionally, Kevin Kilpatrick in center field and Edrick Felix at shortstop will be the core of the club both offensively and defensively, with Caleb Cali and John Marant looking to provide thump in the middle of the order, as both have tremendous raw power. Freshman Carson Bayne is also expected to start right away, and should be a name to watch throughout the course of the season. It’s another good-looking club in Ocala, and they are certainly a contender.

33. Jefferson (MO)

Crowder and JeffCo usually end up going toe-to-toe for the Missouri crown, and we expect 2022 to play out similarly. JeffCo was down a bit in 2021, but look like they are ready to bounce back and compete in a big way this spring. Matt Schark and Payton Howard both return and should lead the offense for Head Coach Zac Bone, who also expects Ohio University commit Gideon Antle, longtime shortstop Josh Gibson, and Joe Hamilton to be key pieces. It’s a very veteran everyday lineup with a lot of experience and a lot of success, leading one to believe that this offense in 2022 could be extremely high-end. On the mound, Jordan Duncan returns after being their best arm a year ago, he should anchor the staff. Transfer Alex Logusch should also be a major piece, along with freshman Tanner Perry amongst others. As stated, this offense should be very good and the pitching staff has a real chance to take a step forward.

34. Cloud County

We’ve stated publicly dating back to the Jayhawk Conference Showcase in September that we expect Cloud to be very good this spring, and we’re sticking with that by ranking them here. Right-hander Aaron Hayes likely leads the way on the mound, with plus to plus-plus spin rate readings on his breaking stuff and good projection on the body; he’s a draft target this summer. He’s joined on staff by key pieces Christian Womble, Giordano Mezzomo, and freshman Tom Poole, amongst others. Offensively, Dallas Baptist commit and center fielder Ian Riley leads the way, he can swing it from the left side and really defend in center field with his plus speed. Garrett Redden likely joins Riley in the outfield and will be a huge key to the middle of the order, he’s a veteran who can really hit and has proved that. Willie Ponce and Ty Wevers should also be big pieces of the everyday lineup. We’re bullish here, and expect Cloud to compete for the crown in Kansas.

35. Ohlone

The experience Ohlone brings back on the offensive side will be where they hang their hat, at least early on in 2022. Getting back the 2021 conference home run king in Jaden Shepard, a potential draft pick, will be a welcome sight for Coach Curran and his staff as they also get back four more everyday guys from last season's lineup. KW Quilici should also generate some draft buzz with his rare combination of size and speed while playing the corner outfield.

On the mound, Max Gonzales and Cade Castillo are the only returning arms, but the hope is bringing in the likes of Ethan Foley and Jeter Ybarra will help replace some of what they lost off last season’s talented pitching staff that lost two arms to Division-I schools.

36. Grayson

Grayson gets the test of nationally-ranked San Jac right out the gate, but feel they have some pieces that will give them the chance to compete with anyone in Texas. At the plate, guys like Davis Powell and Albert Serrano are power bats that will see time in the middle of the order, while Chayton Krauss will kick things off at the top out of the leadoff spot.

On the mound, Dalton Beck and Clark Candiotti have solidified their spots at one and two in the rotation while freshman Sam Crain brings some real upside to the ‘pen. Keep an eye on Beck as he has shown signs of real swing-and-miss stuff that should garner even more attention as the season carries on.

37. RCSJ Gloucester

RCSJ Gloucester comes in at No. 37 in the preseason poll after an especially strong showing in 2021, going 36-6-1 on their way to a World Series appearance. John Cristino, Jose Correa and Eric Sabato are the top returning bats from a year ago and will be looked upon to lead what will be a young, but talented lineup.

On the mound, Thomas Kane is back after tossing 40 innings a year ago and going 4-0 in 13 appearances while proving to a reliable strike thrower as he punched out 71 to only nine walks. Jason Kinnerman will be looked upon to step into a bigger role this year after so much turnover from last year’s staff.

38. Santa Fe

Looking like one of the favorites to make the state tournament out of the Mid-Florida Conference, Santa Fe has four experienced sophomores they feel good about turning to in their starting rotation. Mitchell Gross headlines that staff while Garfield Johns, Lance Bolton and Trent Becker are all back and primed for big seasons.

On the other side of the ball, Jevin Relaford and Zeb Marquis are dynamic athletes that can pressure defenses while Tyler Shelnut and Gabriel Esquivel bring the power to the middle of the order to drive in the runs.

39. Sacramento City

This is another one of those perennial California powerhouses that we’ve talked about, and per usual, it’s anyone’s game in NorCal with Sac City as good a favorite as anyone. It’s a very new, very young club in Sac City this spring, but the talent still stands out. Freshman shortstop Gabe Petrucelli has the makings of a very high-end prospect, and fellow freshman Mateo Lake looks like he’ll be in the middle of the order as well. Veteran Sutton Tompkins and Stefan Foley should also be key pieces. On the mound, look for freshmen Victor Martinez and Elijah Rogalski to be key starters right away, with lefty Kai Peterson also in the mix to see big innings. This is a freshman-laden, very young team right now but they are as well-coached as anyone and very talented, to say the least. Expect Sac City to potentially take some lumps early on, but continue to gel and improve throughout the course of the season.

40. Kirkwood

With many thinking of Kirkwood as one of favorite in Region 11, it’s no surprise to see them find their way into the Preseason Top 50, starting this season at No. 40. Right-hander Graysen Drezek will be at the top of the prospect list in the region. The big right-hander will get the fastball up to 94 mph with present physicality in the frame.

Offensively, they will get back last year's offensive catalyst, Alex Pendergast. Pendergast will only be looking to build on last season's .421 batting average with 34 extra-base hits, including his 16 home runs and 88 runs driven in.

41. Dyersburg State

After the additions of some big-time pieces at the beginning of the year as well as at the break, Head Coach Robert White and the Eagles are looking forward to competing for a Region 7 title. Nelson Smith will be a big piece on the mound, running the fastball up to 93 mph with some downhill plane from a 6-foot-8 frame. Behind Smith, guys like Christian Delalshmit, Anthony Figueroa, Matthew Luna and Aidan McEvoy are all starter-type guys.

At the plate, catcher Gabe Briones, Lukas Cook and Pierre Seals are all guys to keep an eye on as far as their ability to drive in runs. Kameron Johnson and Andy Martin will bring a different speed element to the outfield, as well as the bases, putting pressure on defenses.

42. Lansing

Following a season that saw Lansing go 47-3, run through the season more or less unchallenged, only to fall to Kellogg in the Regional final, the Stars are back with a very veteran offense and a pitching staff full of newcomers. Hunter Lay returns after his Conference Player of the Year campaign in 2021, and he’s joined by fellow returners Blake McRae in center, Shane Juday at second base, and Brendan Ham at third. Bobby Cavin returns to the middle of the lineup and might hit 20 bombs this spring, and watch out for transfer Noah Bright defensively behind the plate. On the mound, it’s a lefty-dominant team, with lefties Brendan Beaver, Grant Dittmer, and Isaac Toole all expected to fill key roles and key innings on this staff. Matthew McKeon, a freshman arm from nearby Okemos, is also a name to watch in terms of how he develops, as the upside is enticing. Lansing should absolutely score a ton of runs this spring, but how their pitching develops will likely tell the story of how the season ends.

43. Parkland

Parkland had a very talented club in 2021 and fell a bit short thanks to some devastating injuries, but they have reloaded and look ready to compete in 2022. They have a new skipper at the helm as well in Anthony Silkwood, a Parkland alum who played under departed Coach Jon Goebel, who is in pro ball now. As we know with the #ParklandPOMafia, it starts on the mound in Champaign, with Jay Schueler and Tucker Shalley expected to lead the rotation. Carter Monk and Mitch Mueller are also expected to be huge contributors, with Jack Snider a key piece out of the bullpen. The offense should be strong as well, with Austin Gomm starting at shortstop and bopper Cole Evans in the middle of the order, along with Jayden Gibson behind the plate and transfer Keenan Taylor. We expect a bounce back from Parkland, and this could be a World Series-contending club.

44. Georgia Highlands

Looking to avenge last season's slip up and once again represent Georgia in the Southeast Regional against Tennessee, Highlands is refocused and reloaded with depth around the diamond. Getting the likes of Connor Perry, Jacob Ryan, Ryan Suppa and Chandler Wood back on the mound give this team a good start on its pitching depth. Then when you add in transfers like Zachary Murray, Keegan Pulford-Thorpe and Gage Vailes, you have seven arms that Coach O’Neil feels comfortable turning to at any time.

Max Copps possesses some of the best tools offensively of anyone on the team, and will team up with Conner Tadaro in the outfield after Tadaro brought home a Gold Glove in center field a year ago. Ethan Anderson will also make contributions on the mound, but his power at the plate is more than intriguing. The double play tandem up the middle appears to be Ben Olson and Mick Moody, but don’t be surprised to see Parker Poteet get some innings there as well, if not in the outfield, as he brings solid upside with the bat.

45. Patrick Henry

Following a strong 2021 season, Patrick Henry looks like a good bet to be one of the top clubs in the Coastal Region in 2022. It’s an offensive-minded club in 2022, with a good number of impactful transfers coming in, and they should be able to score plenty of runs. Trevor Sheehan will plug into the middle of the order right away, and he’s joined by returning cleanup bat Samuel Gallardo. Leadoff hitter Omar Gonzalez will play short and be dynamic all-around, with transfers Joey Pilewski and Bobby Lane also figuring to see plenty of time in impact roles. Drew Harlow figures to lead the staff, as he’s committed to Marshall and sits in the low- to mid-90s with his fastball and should be the staff ace. We’re confident that the Patriots will be very offensive, but how their pitching staff develops over the course of the season will likely determine their ultimate fate this spring.

46. Mercer County

A consistent power in New Jersey, Mercer County looks to be loaded once again in 2022. They have a two-headed monster atop their pitching rotation in veterans Michael Dodd and Charles Kelly, both of whom had great falls and can run the heater into the low-90s with full mixes. Marco Martinez figures to be the leverage guy out of the bullpen, and he’s up to 91-92 mph and misses a ton of bats with his changeup. Offensively, look for Savi Delgado to lead the way from the middle of the order while also showing off his talented glove at shortstop. He’ll be joined in the middle infield by Matthew Ervolina, who will likely lead off while slotting in at second base. Jarrett May will play first base and potentially offers the biggest power of the club, while Jose Diaz behind the plate is a difference-maker defensively who swings it from the left side and will be a major piece, both behind the plate and at it.

47. Saddleback

Saddleback looks to have one of the more potent offenses in the Gold State coming into 2022 as they look to capitalize on some experience back on this year’s roster. Tyler DeClusin will see his fair share of at-bats at the top of the order, as will Luc Stuka and Michael Davinni, who both show some flashes of power from gap-to-gap.

On the mound, Connor Wilford and Ryan Farmer will settle into the top two spots in the rotation as strike throwing workhorses, while the coaching staff seems to be more then comfortable turning it over to any number of guys in the 'pen, trusting the depth they have behind the starters.

48. Lackawanna

One of the major developmental factories of JUCO baseball in the general Northeast region, Lackawanna brings a loaded roster to the table in 2022. Kyle Scott leads the way on the mound, a Maryland commit who can reach the mid-90s with his fastball and spins the curveball over 3,000 RPMs. Phillip Dull is a West Virginia transfer who retains significant upside as he continues to develop, and Aiden Starn will also be a key piece of the pitching staff. Offensively, Cody Fleischer will start behind the plate and hit in the middle of the order; he’s a very talented athlete with a plus arm tool who can absolutely swing it as well. George Castro in the outfield has tremendous power and has as much offensive upside as anyone, and watch out for freshman Jake Simpson, a left-handed bat who is coming into his own as a hitter and is really exciting in terms of the things he can do.

49. Wallace-Hanceville

Hanceville and Coach Putman appear to be reloaded and ready to roll in 2022. Colson Lawerence comes into the season as one of the region’s top draft prospects after showing some big tools on both sides of the ball, with his fastball getting into the mid-90s, and at the plate he will look to follow up last year’s 13 home run, 26 extra-base performance. Freshman Mitchell Heer should be another that takes on some two-way responsibilities with a fastball at 88-91 mph and the ability to handle the bat and hold down a corner outfield spot. Other sophomores to keep an eye on offensively are Ben Arnett, Mason Walker, and Jayce Guyette, after all had good freshman campaigns.

On the mound, Luke Daniel will be a key arm for the Lions after he struck out 62 in 43 innings with a fastball-breaking ball combo that carried him through his nine starts a year ago. As far as freshman arms go, the coaching staff seems especially excited about Owen Arndt, Dylan Rhadans and Will Varmette, as each should see action early on with fastballs that will get into the low-90s.

50. Colby

Another Kansas team we find ourselves high on following their performance at the Jayhawk Showcase back in the fall, Colby has a good mix of pitching depth and talent through the lineup. Right-handed Alex Cook has high-octane stuff, reaching the mid- to upper-90s at times with his fastball and looking the part of an impact ace. Hagen Barcello, Kyle Froehlich, and Tyler Hampu also figure to be in the mix on the mound for big roles. Offensively, Jake Ticer is a huge left-handed bat to have back in the everyday lineup, as he hit 22 bombs last year and is in line for a repeat performance. Liam Vulcano and Cleary Simpson will both be key pieces in the everyday lineup as well, with Brayden Cust expected to be one of the top hitters on the club joining them. Look for Colby to be well-rounded and athletic, and we expect them to really swing it overall as well.

Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Carter White – Falmouth Commodores  Talk about making a great first impression! White introduced himself in a very loud and boisterous way this past week by going 9-17 (.529 AVG) with 6 RBI...

East Cobb Goes Undefeated, Takes 14U BCS Twenty years after winning the inaugural 14U BCS National Championship in 2006, the East Cobb Astros once again stood atop the tournament, defeating the Original Florida Pokers 7-4 at JetBlue Park. A hot, sunny afternoon set the stage for a tightly contested match between the Original Florida Pokers 2030 and East Cobb Astros 14U Orange. Although the Pokers had a two-run lead with just three innings to go, East Cobb showed their team had no quit as they pulled away with a 7-4 victory. The teams battled through a highly contested tournament field of over sixty teams from across the country, with the Pokers coming in 8-1 and East Cobb entering 8-0 in tournament play. Cohen Carter started on the mound for East Cobb, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out three batters over four innings. His fastball sat 71-75 mph. Silas Anstett opened the...

A rather unknown for me and my staff going into the event, Tabler managed to cement himself by event’s end. It’s a true two-way projection at this stage, while he has the size in the 6-foot-3 long and loose frame, the strength will continue to add on to the 175-pound stature. While he only had two extra-base hits (triple, home run), the bat-to-ball skills were the calling card, and...

The SBA Bolts were perfect throughout their week, running the table and going 11-0 while outscoring their opponents by an impressive margin of 108-25. “It was awesome,” SBA Head Coach Travis Thompson said on the mercy rule victory. “It just kind of culminated our week. Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. 14u BCS Scout Note Recap

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The barrel works efficiently through the zone and there is a solid offensive foundation present.
