2022 Rankings Risers: Hitters

Photo: Termarr Johnson (Perfect Game)
The class of 2022 rankings have been updated after a busy fall season which included several eye-opening performances in Jupiter, Florida during the WWBA World Championships. Today we'll take a look at 12 of the bats who rose throughout the rankings and continue with arms who made equally impressive jumps in tomorrow's edition.

Termarr Johnson (2022, Atlanta, Ga.), No. 1 overall: Johnson may have only moved one spot up, but moving from No. 2 to No. 1 definitely warrants mentioning in a space such as this one. The consistent excellence of Johnson’s offensive profile, highlighted by a quality final showing in Jupiter, is what earned him the nod here. He possesses one of the best pure hit tools we’ve seen from a prep player, period.

Justin Crawford (2022, Las Vegas, Nev.), No. 12 overall: Crawford has long been a highly-ranked player, showing off huge tools and twitch over the course of the summer, but this latest rise up the rankings has to do with his performance. He raked throughout the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, continuing to show his elite speed along with ever-developing hitting tools, making his upside an extremely high one.

Tommy Specht (2022, Dubuque, Iowa), No. 35 overall: Specht is no stranger to a lofty spot in the 2022 rankings, but a strong fall with the bat and more overall AB-to-AB consistency saw him rise up a handful of spots. The tools stand out in a big way and have for some time now, and as he’s done a better job of being consistent in his approach and swing decisions, the offensive profile has taken another step forward.

Ike Irish (2022, Hudsonville, Mich.), No. 37 overall: Irish has seen his ranking rise over 100 spots over the course of the last year, and with good reason. The left-handed hitting catcher has done nothing but prove he can hit and hit for power, and he’s done a nice job of continuing to refine his defensive skills, becoming more consistent with his throwing accuracy and receiving. He’ll be a focal point for scouts, along with several of his teammates at OLSM, this coming spring.

Ethan Petry (2022, Land O’Lakes, Fla.), No. 47 overall: Petry hit in the middle of the lineup for WWBA World Champion Ostingers Baseball Academy in Jupiter, and scouts got a ton of looks at him consistently finding the barrel authoritatively. His numbers from the event are wholly fine, but when one digs deeper, his exit velocities from the event were very strong, even on his outs, and he’s continuing to show as a draft-caliber offensive player.

Nicolas Perez (2022, Isabela, P.R.), No. 68 overall: Perez really stole the show in Jupiter last month, showing up with a significant increase in physicality and, as a result, offensive profile. He picked up three doubles and a bomb during the WWBA World Championship and on the whole showed explosive bat speed with good barrel accuracy, opening lots of eyes and likely establishing himself as the top prep player out of Puerto Rico in this class.

Austin Charles (2022, Bakersfield, Calif.), No. 72 overall: Charles showed up in Jupiter with the Ohio Warhawks and was sensational, OPS’ing 1.296 with the bat and looking good on the mound, too. A UC Santa Barbara commit, Charles has tremendous size and offensive tools with a good chance to stick on the left side of the infield as well. He’ll be a priority look for scouts in the spring, for sure.

Devin Taylor (2022, Cincinnati, Ohio), No. 73 overall: Taylor always hits, and has always hit in PG events, though the way his offensive profile has taken off this fall given the addition of some needed physicality was something to behold regardless. A left-handed hitter with tremendous bat-to-ball skills, Taylor is now physically capable of driving the ball out of the park to any field and can do so while maintaining his hitting skills, making this Indiana commit one of the premier offensive players in the region.

Luke Adams (2022, Hinsdale, Ill.), No. 119 overall: Adams had a big fall playing with the Reds Midwest Scout Team, and there’s a ton to like about the overall package here. Adams is a good athlete with the potential ability to play all four corner spots in the IF/OF, with lots of right-handed bat speed and power potential. He raked this fall, hit for power with consistency, and took good at-bats. He highlights a strong 2022 class for Michigan State.

Blake Cyr (2022, Windermere, Fla.), No. 125 overall: Cyr has been a long-time staple of PG scouting recaps given his consistent performance in any event he attends, and he had a great fall overall. He was maybe the most consistent hitter on the FTB/Phillies Scout Team club and continued to show his usual above-average defense in the middle infield along the way, earning a well-deserved bump up the rankings in the process.

Max Martin (2022, Edgewater Park, N.J.), No. 133 overall: Martin blew up at ECPS in August then rolled into Jupiter this fall with a bevy of tools and put them on display. The bat speed stands out immediately and grades out better than plus, with plenty of ability to drive the baseball and easy power projection, along with the defensive tools and athleticism to stick in the middle infield. He’s a major draft name for the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Region next spring.

Marek Houston (2022, Nokomis, Fla.), No. 210 overall: Houston did nothing but rake for the World Champions in Jupiter, slashing .450/.520/.550 from the middle of the Ostingers lineup. A Wake Forest commit, Houston was named MVP in Jupiter and projects to continue coming into big-time power as he fills out his frame, and given his already-advanced bat-to-ball skills, the upside here is pretty massive.

Top 100 Collegiate Freshmen | Top 100 Collegiate Sophomores | Top 100 Collegiate Juniors This senior board is one of the deepest we’ve assembled in years. From experienced weekend arms with power stuff, to proven position players coming off loud 2025 spring seasons, to former prospects returning from injury and looking to reestablish their status, impact players are scattered throughout the group. Headlining the board is Maika Niu, now at Arkansas after a strong season at Marshall and an MVP summer on the Cape. Nui is a high-level athlete in center field and a legitimate offensive force who should slide seamlessly into the heart of the Razorbacks’ lineup. Close behind are two premium arms in Ole Miss’s Hunter Elliott and Kentucky’s Jaxon Jelkin. Elliott is coming off a monster 2025 spring, going 10–3 with a 2.94 ERA and 104 strikeouts, and...

Top 100 Collegiate Freshmen As we creep toward opening day here in a month or so, the draft team has put together the Top 100 sophomores on campus this spring.  This list is chalk full of talent, with future draft prospects littered top to bottom. The headliner of this group is Derek Curiel, a draft eligible sophomore that took the SEC by storm last spring. The Perfect Game All-American posted a .990 OPS over the course of a full season and is projected to vault himself further up the board during his ‘26 campaign. An electric arm in Dax Whitney follows up Curiel, with Strosnider, Lawson and Franco rounding out the top five.  Keep tabs on the draft eligible sophomores in this group come the summer. The rest of the pack are eligible for next year’s draft and figure to feature at the top of many draft lists in ‘27.  Rk. Name Level Pos. B-T School Hometown...

Top 100 Collegiate Freshmen

As we creep toward opening day here in a month or so, the draft team has put together the Top 100 freshmen on campus this spring.  Three high-end arms lead the way, starting with Jack Bauer. The Mississippi State left-hander reached triple digits as a prep and is sure to make an immediate impact this spring. UCLA right-hander Angel Cervantes was selected in the 2nd round of last year’s draft but held firm on his commitment and should be an impact arm for the Bruins. Following the arms, a collection of bats rounds out the Top 10. There is loads of upside to the group with the potential and they should draw considerable playing time as freshman.  As the list gets deeper, there are plenty of players that should pop up and make significant contributions both this year and years down the line. The class has both depth and talent, making for a very intriguing group of...

LSU Reloads & Returns; Opens No. 1

Vincent Cervino

“How do you get to success? You have to honor the process that you built to get to that success…The standard is how we operate, train, and get better each day.”” Process-oriented leadership is a popular coaching strategy here in the mid-2020s but no one exemplifies that more than LSU head coach Jay Johnson. He’s won the Tigers two national titles during his time in Baton Rouge and expectations won’t be any lower in 2026 as LSU is the No. 1 team in the country in Perfect Game’s Preseason Top 25.  Johnson is heading into his fifth season at the helm in Baton Rouge and it’s fair to say that he has already experienced enormous success. There have been two national titles in four years (2023, 2025), a Golden Spikes winner (Dylan Crews, 2023), a first overall MLB Draft pick (Paul Skenes, 2023), and five first-round MLB Draft picks during...
