16/17U Mid Atlantic Elite Champ. Scout Recap

John McAdams      AJ Denny
In what was supposed to an exciting collection of both 16U and 17U teams this holiday weekend in South Jersey, turned into a truncated version of the original event. Mother Nature ultimately caused the cancellation of the 16U event and significantly shortened the 17U tournament. Needless to say; there were some standouts across both events in the games that did happen, as several are noted below.

17U Mid-Atlantic Championship

Jack Benis (2022, Downingtown, Pa.) is a talented uncommitted 2022 grad that took home MVP honors on Sunday, leading the offense for eventual champions Downingtown Baseball Club. The right-hander hit .555 (10-for-18) for the event including four home runs and 16 runs batted in. Benis implores a simple setup at the plate, simply waiting for a pitch he can handle and using his quick hands to impact the baseball all over the field. He has advanced barrel skills and did not miss anything this weekend. The Downingtown, Pa. native displays legitimate power potential, while showing good plate coverage and a keen eye. He is an able defender in the outfield with good instincts and routes to the ball. His arm strength will play in either right or left long term, while potentially moving to first base as the bat is the carrying tool at present. Benis will be someone we continue to monitor, as he should garner plenty of attention from college coaches moving forward.
