It’s safe to say day one of the 15U National Elite Championship was not a letdown. We saw 21 pitchers topping out at 87 mph or better and hitters taking competitive at-bats all day long, driving baseballs in the gap and taking extra bases.

When talking about pitching on day one you have to start with the four arms USA Prime ran out. Jack Frankel (2024, Plano, Texas) sat 89-92 mph and touched a 94 in his inning of work, giving him the best fastball in the class to date. Brex Caldwell (2024, Red Oak, Okla.), an Oklahoma State commit, followed Frankel in the order and touched 90 in his own right while sitting 86-89 mph and showing more off-speed. Noah LaFine (2024, Uniontown, Ohio), a Vanderbilt commit, toed the rubber next sitting 84-86 mph with all the arm-side run on display as he sank the ball under the hands of righties. Calder Glassman (2024, New York, N.Y.) was the man for the last three outs, sitting 85-88 mph with a slider as he struck out three in his one inning of work. Check back for more as all four arms will make long appearances later in the tournament.

Matthew Cash (2024, Centerville, Ala.) was doing it all for the East Coast Sox on day one as he got the start on the mound with his fastball into the mid-80s, going two-plus innings with four strikeouts to just one walk. Where he really did his damage though was at the plate. The left-handed hitting primary infielder was in the leadoff spot going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. His triple in the opposite field gap came in his third at-bat when he got an elevated fastball and drove it over the shortstop's head, splitting the outfielders and making it to the wall as he motored into third base. Cash checks in right toward the top of the talented infielders in the class of 2024 and will be a name to keep an eye on.
