TBT Cruising Through Pool at 14u BCS

Photo: Lenox Lively (Perfect Game)
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- When it comes to the 14u level, few teams in the country have the talent that TBT Ballers National has, and even fewer have had as much success.

The Boca Raton, Fla.-based squad is the fifth-ranked 14u team nationally by Perfect Game and is the top roster in the Florida-Puerto Rico region. TBT has backed up their high praise so far in 2021, accumulating a 27-7-1 record since January and winning the 2021 14U PG Invitational National Championship South FL Qualifier in March. Through the opening weekend of the 2021 14u BCS National Championship, TBT stayed red hot, picking up three mercy-rule victories to begin the tournament. TBT head coach Stephen Clyne was happy with how his team performed heading into ranked play on Monday.

“We’re 3-0 right now and firing on all cylinders,” Clyne said. “All phases are clicking for us, but there’s always tomorrow, and we’re looking forward to getting after it.”

Clyne has a reason to be confident, as he heads one of the most talented rosters in the nation. Oklahoma commit Gavin Richars leads the way for TBT, as the 4th-ranked right-handed pitcher in the class of 2025 will be called to the mound in the coming days for his squad. While it’s uncommon to have an incoming freshman already committed to a college, Richars and his family felt comfortable enough with coach Skip Johnson and his staff to decide at an early age.

“I fell in love with the school,” Richars said. “The coaches are all really good guys, and everything about them made me want to go there.”

Accompanying Richars are Dayson Griffis, Jackson Miller, Cameron Uzzillia, Osjun Rivas and Danny Machado, all of who rank inside the top-100 in the 2025 class. Rivers Kurland and Michael Cascino round out the formidable TBT roster, as they also rank in the top-150 of the 2025 class. Clyne believes that his squad’s past success is key in attracting talent for prestigious tournaments such as the BCS.

“It has to do with our culture,” Clyne said. “People know our name and know we win. A lot of the kids want to be around a winning culture. Then it comes down to building camaraderie within the team to be successful.”

Over the weekend, TBT showcased its talent in a big way. Beating the RI Rays 10-1 on Saturday and continuing with a 9-1 victory over Bottom of the Ninth into Sunday morning, TBT kept the theme alive Sunday afternoon, mercy-ruling the Barrett Braves 10-0 in five innings. After posting a +27 run differential over the weekend, Richars attributes the high offensive production to making hard contact.

“We’ve caught a lot of barrels,” Richars said. “We’ve hit the ball hard in good spots, and that’s helped us hit great.”

The TBT offensive production showed up in full force to begin their Sunday matinee against the Braves. With bases loaded and no outs, Miller drilled a two-RBI double to open the game’s scoring. Griffis then returned the favor, driving another two-RBI double to left to score Miller and Kurland. After a pitch hit Richars, Jadyn Nunez lined a ball to right that the Braves’ outfielder misplayed, scoring both Griffis and Richars. Mason Schirmer then poked an RBI single up the middle to score Nunez, capping the TBT first inning at seven runs. Clyne was pleased with how his team has performed offensively on the weekend but not surprised.

“We’ve got 13 dogs in our lineup right now,” Clyne said. “Everyone can hit it out of the park. Everyone can do situational hitting. We’ve been executing when we’ve needed to execute.”

After Lenox Lively powered through the Braves bats in the top of the second, a lengthy rain delay paused the game for over two hours. The hiatus didn’t stop the TBT momentum, however, as Gabe Gonzales drilled a double to left field to start the bottom half. Uzzillia took advantage of the runner in scoring position, skying a deep RBI ground-rule double to right, giving TBT an 8-0 lead.

The rain delay didn’t stop Lively either, as he continued to shut down the Braves’ offense. The 2024 right-hander out of Swainsboro, Ga. tossed a complete game shutout for TBT, striking out two while only allowing three hits. While his team’s offensive production was impressive, Clyne was equally proud of Lively’s performance on the bump.

“He had some issues last outing, but he made some mechanical adjustments with his pitching coach and looked great out there today,” Clyne said. “He came out here and threw a lot of strikes, which was awesome for us and all we needed today.”

Despite their advantage, the TBT attack didn’t let up. After loading the bases, Emery Coleman and Machado drew walks to add two runs for the squad, finishing off the TBT offensive onslaught at ten runs.

After his offense finally quieted in the fourth, Lively finished off the Braves in the fifth, inducing a groundout to short to close out the 10-0 run-shortened victory. After dominating their first few matchups, Clyne and his squad are confident heading into ranked pool play.

“We expect to win this tournament,” Clyne said. “We have a talented roster, and everyone is healthy, so we look forward to what is ahead of us.”

With a long few days of baseball ahead of them, TBT looks to be one of the favorites come championship day. While his roster is full of many individual talents, Clyne makes sure to remind his squad why they are in Fort Myers this week: a BCS title.

“There’s a lot of baseball to be played,” Clyne said. “They know that for us to be successful, we need to play as a team, and kids know that coming into our program. Having the name TBT on their chest is an honor for these kids, and we hope to take advantage of our opportunities this week.”

‘27 IF Braylon Sheffield (FL) with an absolute 🚀 here, launching high off the RCF wall for a 3B. Super polished LH stick; hit over .400 last year on the circuit. #GoHoos commit. #EastMemorial pic.twitter.com/mdehqpR5v5 — Perfect Game Florida (@Florida_PG) May 23, 2026 Braylon Sheffield (2027, Fort Myers, Fla.) got the event started with the loudest swing of the night on Friday at Terry Park, rocketing a triple off the wall in the stadium. Sheffield, ranked 121 and committed to Virginia, is a super polished left-handed hitter with left side of the infield projection long term. The swing is tension-free with loose wrists and he generates easy bat speed with already present power to the pull side. This blast came inches away from being a home run and hitting a ball that far at Terry Park stadium is a significant shot. Sheffield also tripled in his second game of the weekend at...

The Insidious Lie That Hurts Pitchers Thep Most How many of you have ever had a terrible outing and afterward couldn’t really explain what went wrong? And how many of you have ever had a great outing and couldn’t explain what you did differently either? That gap between what is happening and your awareness of what is happening may be one of the most important gaps in player development. Closing that gap has a name. It is called metacognition. In simple terms, metacognition means thinking about your thinking. It is the ability to understand how you learn, how you perform, how you respond under pressure, and how you make adjustments when things are not going your way. For a pitcher, that matters because no matter how good your coach is, he cannot stand on the mound with you. Your coach cannot take the ball with the bases loaded, two outs, and the best hitter in the league...

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: May 20

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
There is a reason the preseason pick to win it all rarely does. College baseball's postseason is a gauntlet — double elimination, best-of-three’s, then a full World Series format — and the team that looks unbeatable in February has to prove it again in May against opponents who have had just as long to get ready. Plenty of programs have entered the tournament as the obvious favorite and gone home early. It happens every year. Nobody should be shocked when it does. Top-ranked teams flaming out in regional weekends happens so many times it has become its own genre of schadenfreude Which makes this particular moment worth noting. The Perfect Game preseason picks to win the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III national titles — Tennessee Wesleyan, UT Tyler, and the University of Lynchburg — are all still alive heading into the final rounds. All three...

Coppy's Corner: May 21 POY Deep Dive

John Coppolella

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.   Co-Player of the Week: Carson Tinney – University of Texas  As a Notre Dame alumnus, it pained me to see Tinney transfer from the Golden Dome to the University of Texas after an All-American sophomore season for the Irish. He’s picked up in Austin right where he left off in South Bend and is currently hitting .321 AVG, 20 HR, .475 OBP / .695 SLG / 1.170 OPS on the 2026 season. It’s plus right-handed power and a plus arm; with the numbers I have found indicating that Tinney has erased more than half of attempted base stealers over the past two seasons of college baseball. Tinney threw...

Best of the Best Event Preview

Jheremy Brown
Article Image
In simplistic terms, the Best of The Best tournament is an absolute gauntlet as seemingly every game brings a playoff game atmosphere. Coaches must strategically map out their pitching to ensure they can get through Pool Play while also making sure they have arms to make a deep playoff run. Each and every age group is loaded with the best teams, composed of some of the best players that travel baseball has to offer. The 9u & 10u age groups will respectively have 9 out of the Top 10 Teams within the latest PG National Team Rankings participating in the event. At 9U, LTP-Reign will look to hold on to their #1 ranking but will have plenty of competition with the likes of ZT National Prospects and HTX-Wildcatters 9U looking to take over that #1 spot. In the 10u age group, Elevate National will look to fend off plenty of talent with #2 ranked Kaos National, East Cobb Astros and ZT...

College Players of the Week: May 19

May 19th Perfect Game/Co-Players of the Week:  Carson Tinney, C, Texas  The Texas Longhorns just finished off another stellar regular season and are heading to Hoover for the SEC Conference Tournament as the No. 2 Seed this week.  To secure their 2nd place finish, they had to sweep Missouri at home last weekend and did so in large part to the power bat of Carson Tinney.  The 6-4/240 catcher from Castle Pines, CO transferred to Austin after two sensational seasons at Notre Dame and has thrived in his draft year.  In the 3-game set, Tinney collected 7 hits in 13 at-bats, scoring 5 runs, with a double, 3 home runs and he drove in 10 runs all told.  With some of the most prodigious power in the college game this year, Tinney is now slashing .321/.695/.473 with 10 doubles an incredible 20 home runs and 54 RBIs while playing in the most spacious ballpark in the...
