WWBA WMDC set to bring the heat

Photo: Jack Frankel (Perfect Game)

SURPRISE, Ariz. – It’s official, Perfect Game Baseball fans. The desert Southwest is definitely open for business and make no mistake, business will be booming over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend in Phoenix’s West Valley of the Sun. And, as a PSA for those planning to attend, be sure to pack your sunscreen.

More than 120 teams from states in the most western third of the country will compete for championships in six age divisions during play Friday through Monday at the 2021 PG WWBA West Memorial Day Classic.

Competition will take place in the 18u (14 teams), 17u (18), 16u (26), 15u (15), 14u (36) and 13u (14) age groups. Games are slated to be played at two state-of-the-art MLB Cactus League Spring Training complexes in Surprise (Royals, Rangers) and Goodyear (Indians, Reds); several area high school fields will also be employed.

With close to 2,000 players expected to gather in the West Valley – where the daily high temperature is forecast to hover around 100 degrees throughout the event’s four-day run – it’ safe to say the competition will be heated at every turn.

And perhaps even more so than in years past after the 2020 version of the PG WWBA WMDC was cancelled by COVID-19, and with all of the older top prospects in attendance coming off their first high school seasons in two years. Simply put, these guys are going to be ready to get after it. Just based on the size of their fields, the 14u and 16u divisions promise to garner a lion’s share of the attention.

With 36 teams from top western state programs like the BPA, Canes, CBA, GBG, LVR, San Diego Show, So Cal Bombers, Top Tier and Trosky – among a host of others – just advancing to the 10-team, single-elimination playoffs at the 14u event presents a challenge.

There will certainly be star-power galore on display in this division, with 13 prospects from the class of 2025 ranked in the top-60 nationally.

It’s a group that includes MVP Hustle Black 2025 La Mirada, Calif., outfielder Travis Friend (No. 9-ranked); Top Tier Americans 2025 Anaheim, Calif., outfielder Josiah Hartshorn (No. 10); Canes West 2025 San Antonio catcher Masa Chilcutt (No. 17); Trosky National 2025 Mount Vernon, Wash., catcher Xavier Neyens (No. 19, Oregon State commit) and Canes West 2025 Murrieta, Calif., third baseman Vaughn Neckar (No. 20).

Another Canes West 2025 prospect to keep an eye on is Scottsdale outfielder Cam Caminiti (No. 24-ranked) who is rostered with the Canes West at both the 14u and 15u events.

The top prospect at the 16u WWBA WMDC is Phoenix 2023 right-hander/first baseman Grant Smith, who is ranked No. 37 nationally (No. 8 RHP). Scouts will have to be on their toes while trying to keep track of Smith, however, as he’s rostered with both the Canes West 2023 and the Canes Arizona 2023 Gold at the 16u WWBA WMDC and with the Canes Arizona 2023 Gold at the 17u WWBA WMDC.

The Phoenix-based 3D Gold program has put together a pair of powerhouse rosters that feature 14 top guys who occupy spots on both of its 17u and 18u teams. Heading that list of notables is 2023 outfielder/right-hander Duce Robinson (No. 60) out of Phoenix and ’23 right-hander/outfielder James DeCremer (No. 178, Oregon State) from Scottsdale in the East Valley.

Top 2022s playing in the 18u WWBA WMDC include Mill Creek, Wash., shortstop Dominic Hellman (No. 31, Oregon) for the Washington Rush and Las Vegas third baseman Demitri Diamant (No. 79, Georgia Tech) from 3D Gold.

And speaking of representation from the East Valley, the Scottsdale Dirtbags 2024 Black jump off the page as a formidable entrant at the 15u WWBA WMDC.

A trio of top 2024s in Plano, Texas right-hander/first baseman Jack Frankel (No. 11), Phoenix shortstop/utilityman Chris Newstrom (No. 12, Arizona State) and Red Oak, Okla., right-hander/corner-infielder Brex Caldwell (No. 73, Oklahoma State) lead the way and they know their way around the Perfect Game circuit. All three performed at the 2019 PG 13u Select Baseball Festival and Frankel and Newstrom returned for the 14u Select Festival in 2020.

As the PG 2021 summer tournament season officially opens over this much-anticipated Memorial Day Weekend, it’s impossible to not be excited about what the next several months will bring. The Valley of the Sun is definitely open for business and, yes, business will be booming.

For many young players, competing alongside some of the top talent in the country can be intimidating. For Chris Reed, it is simply another opportunity to prove he belongs. The Conyers, Georgia native has established himself as one of the premier players in the 2030 class, currently ranking No. 24 nationally and No. 7 among shortstops according to Perfect Game. Reed’s game has consistently stood out against elite competition thanks to his athleticism, instincts, and all-around skill set. That ability was on full display during the 2025 Perfect Game 13U National Showcase, where Reed earned his invitation to the PG Select Festival, one of the most prestigious events available to players his age. “It showed that I can play with the best of the best, and that I belong,” Reed said of the experience. The event provided more than just exposure. It also reinforced an important...

Beast of the East Scout Notes: Day 1

Perfect Game Staff

‘29 SS Chase Hallett (NJ) drops the bat head on this one & lifts it out to the PS for a solo HR. Free and easy LH swing w/ present strength & more to dream on. #BeastOfTheEast @PGMidAtlantic pic.twitter.com/Ym9LFg05tx — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) June 4, 2026 Chase Hallett (2029, Pennington, N.J.) came up with a loud swing on Thursday morning, dropping the barrel on one and lifting it out to the pull-side. It’s an intriguing profile overall with the young left-handed hitting middle infielder and the power projects in a big way. The swing is short and simple, he finds the barrel at a high clip, and is a sure handed defender up the middle. This has all the makings of a high-end prospect in a few years and is certainly a name of note in the ‘29 class. Canon Day (2028, Germantown, Tenn.) put together a great day on the offensive side of things,...

Jayce Dejong (‘27, CA) finished 6-for-14 on the weekend which included a big HR in the championship game. Intriguing @PG_Uncommitted player to monitor this summer. #CAKickoff https://t.co/UbuSQxNalf pic.twitter.com/kjVcyiG8km — Perfect Game California (@California_PG) June 1, 2026 Jayce Dejong (2027, Yorba Linda, Calif). Really strong weekend at the plate, going 6-for-14 with multiple line-drive barrels, including a no-doubt pull-side HR. Medium, lean, athletic frame with room to add. Hits from a wider base from the left side, starts early and consistently gets to launch on time. Loose barrel turn with adjustability and length through the middle, showing the ability to create lift and impact out front. Coming off a strong junior season at Crean Lutheran and should be a priority uncommitted follow this summer. Evan Stroner (2027, Huntington Beach, Calif). Impressive...

After a week of dominant performances, timely hitting, and resilient play, EBC 17U-Griggs capped off its run through the 2026 Perfect Game Hoover Invitational with a championship victory Monday, securing the program’s first tournament title of the summer. Despite a lengthy rain delay, EBC never lost focus, relying on contributions throughout the lineup and another strong pitching performance to secure the win. “This being our first [win] of the summer, we have an amazing group right here,” head coach Rodd Griggs said. “Some of the guys I’ve had for years, some of the guys just joined us this summer, but it’s an amazing group.” EBC’s championship performance reflected the depth that carried the club throughout the tournament. JJ Utash (‘27, AZ) tripled to both gaps, collecting 3 RBI along the way. Big time strength. Balls jumps off the barrel to all fields. Good runner/athlete too. #HookEm commit #AZKickoff pic.twitter.com/h1SbsSxpMy — Perfect Game Four Corners (@PG_FourCorners) May 30, 2026 JJ Utash (2027, Gilbert, Ariz.) is the top-ranked player in the state and showed off why over the weekend. The Texas commit collected five hits, including a pair of doubles and a pair of triples. The mix of power and speed is impressive. The ball jumps off the barrel with ease to all fields. Utash consistently lifts balls with authority, resulting in loud in-game power. The speed on the bases stands out as well. Utash looks to be aggressive and can take extra bags when they present themselves. The tools are some of the loudest in the class and will draw considerable draft interest next July.  Soren...

Best of the Best Scout Notes

Jheremy Brown
Article Image
Kolt Hampton (2030, Chandler, Ariz.) is one of several prospects we’re seeing for the first time in a bit who’ve made big jumps, either in physicality or performance. Now listed at 6-foot-1 (and he might actually be taller) the left-handed stick showcased a smooth swing that should hit for both power and average long term while also jumping on the mound where he ran his fastball up to 86 mph.  Similar to Kolt Hampton above, Colton Byrnes (2030, Truckee, Calif.) immediately makes you do a double take as he’s shot up in height since the fall, now standing at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds. The starting shortstop for Let Them Play, the added length to his frame certainly didn’t detract from his abilities in the dirt, making one play in particular where he rounded the backhand, came through the ball and delivered a strike across to first. There’s always been barrel...
