Iowa Spring League Scout Notes: Week 5

As the sun sets and the curtains close on the 25th annual Iowa Spring League, we reflect on what a great five weeks of baseball it was for the top prospects in Iowa and the surrounding states. With COVID stopping the League dead in its tracks last year, it seemed as though the excitement, competition, and pro coverage was at an all-time high.

In total, we had 57 players rostered who currently hold Division-I commitments, and 24 players who are ranked within the top-400 of their respective classes, making for an outstanding collection of talent. And of course, when there are good players to be seen, the scouts will come in droves. We had double-digit pro scouts on hand every single weekend, proving once again that the Iowa Spring League provides players with the best chance to be seen in the state, without a doubt.



Now, on to the final week of baseball.

Saturday Notebook

Iowa Select Evans defeated Iowa Sticks Scout, 10-9, on Saturday morning, scoring a run in the last inning to secure the victory. Starting on the bump for the Sticks was Weston Fulk (2021, Ankeny, Iowa). This was Fulk’s first and only appearance during the Spring League, and he certainly made it count, throwing three no-hit innings and striking out five opposing batters. The Iowa commit would walk just one and give up a run due to some great situational hitting by Iowa Select Evans. The left-hander has a large 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame with present strength and is solidly built. He sat 84-86 mph, topping out at 87 mph with a short arm action that comes through clean and easy. He stays in line well with the plate and repeats the operation consistently. His curveball was his out pitch today, showing 1/7 shape with great depth and tilt and a substantial amount of both vertical and horizontal movement when thrown to the glove side. He could drop it in for an easy strike versus left-handed hitters, and would often throw it on the back foot of right-handed hitters, showing huge swing-and-miss traits at present. The fastball flashed quality arm-side run, and he had the ability to mix in a changeup versus right-handed hitters, displaying a solid three-pitch mix. The body and the simplicity of the operation project very well moving forward, and he has the traits of a future starting pitcher at the next level.
 

Fellow Iowa commit and shortstop for the Sticks, Sam Petersen (2021, Huxley, Iowa), was seeing the ball extremely well today, as he finished 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, and three RBI. Each of Petersen's hits were well struck, with the loudest contact coming in the third inning. With the bases loaded, he connected with an 0-1 fastball, burning the center fielder with a deep fly ball to the warning track. His present barrel accuracy and bat-to-ball skills were on full display today, as was his speed. In addition to motoring around the bases for three extra-base hits, he also wreaked havoc on the basepaths, easily stealing two bags. The senior is a definite quick-twitch player and is explosive in all aspects of the game. Petersen is currently the No. 4 prospect in the state.
