Dylan Smith, RHP, Alabama

Junior right-hander Dylan Smith got the ball on Saturday night for Alabama as their No. 2, trying to claim the series over Tennessee. Smith gave the Tide four innings of shutout baseball with five strikeouts before exiting the game with 97 pitches thrown.

Smith has some length yet in his build to fill out upon at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, and you could project more weight onto the frame moving forward. Early in the start it was mostly about the fastball, sitting 91-93 mph through the first inning and getting up to 94 mph. He produced some chase on the fastball to the glove side and struck out two in the first frame while only showing one off-speed pitch.

As he got later into the start, Smith started to rely on the slider he threw in the 80-83 mph range with occasional tilt through the hitting zone. The second time through the order the slider became more of a regular offering, using it in multiple counts, as a nice mix with the fastball. He also showed a straighter changeup in the mid-80s and a few curveballs with more depth in the 76-78 mph range.

Smith showed four pitches in the outing but threw almost exclusively fastball and slider in this outing. The fastball has some traits to like with his best control to the glove side. The slider, like the fastball, has some things to like and could project even better down the line with more conviction through the release and the potential for more late bite.
