Super Regional NIT Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2


Ryker Waite (2025, Queen Creek. Ariz) had himself a tournament for BPA 14U at the 2021 PG 14U Super Regional NIT (Major). He may be undersized at the moment standing at 5-foot-7, 145 pounds, but he makes up for it with his ability at the plate and defensively at shortstop. In 28 plate appearances he would hit .435 with six doubles, a triple and one home run. Waite was the leading force to the BPA 14U offense that would end in the championship game. He also had nine RBI along with 12 runs scored and seven stolen bases. He possesses fast hands that enter the zone quickly, makes regular contact out front and has lift to his swing upon contact. Defensively, he made tough plays look routine at shortstop with good lateral agility in the hole and up the middle. He has solid arm strength and made all the throws with good carry that were very accurate. Waite has a bright future ahead and is a young prospect that could make some noise and catch the attention of colleges once he begins his high school career.

Tyler Wick (2025, Calif.)  has a very loose and athletic swing, utilizing a simple stride and gets the barrel to the ball frequently, creating nice jump off of his bat. He’s a solid base runner and stealing bags should stay a part of his game. Defensively his athleticism should allow him to succeed playing up the middle. He's a well rounded player who can impact the game in multiple facets.
 

Ryan Holmes (2025, Calif.) is an athletic shortstop that was making highlight reel plays in the field all day. He showed off impressive range to both sides and excellent hands. His arm is solid for the position and accurate across the diamond. It was tough to get a ball by him, he’s a vacuum. At the plate, his swing is balanced with strength to it. He has a bat waggle and a wrap in his pre-pitch set up but he still managed to impact the ball well throughout the day. His defense though is what sets him apart and his glove is a game changer at shortstop.
 

Jack Jorgenson (2025, Texas) kept hitters off-balanced throughout his outing Monday. His fastball sat around 79 with life to it and mixed a solid changeup as well, working around 70 mph with solid depth under the fastball. It was one of the best changeups in the tournament. His breaking ball was sharp and generated a lot of ugly chases from hitters. His arm action is deceptive and his three pitch mix should continue to be very effective.

Karson Trichel (2025, Monroe, La) has our close attention as he continues making huge leaps in his game and develops his physicality. He was up to 83 mph on the mound with great command for his stuff and maintained a mature composure in tight spots, proving to be an excellent young competitor. A strong quarter-final performance against a top to bottom talented MVP Hustle Black team, Trichel collected four punch outs and gave up just two hits in his five innings. He throws with authority, utilizes back side engagement well with some drop and drive action delivery which in turn gets plenty of explosive push off the rubber. There's intent with his pitch rotation and he throws a solid 12/6 breaking ball with consistent arm speed and good spin which really compliments his fastball which shows some life and lives low zone. Trichel has rapidly put together a confident feel for all of his mechanics. The lengthy 6-foot-3 frame with a clean arm projects well on the mound to become a high ceiling prospect.

We are in the early stages of the 2027 cycle and there is still plenty of time for players to make significant jumps up the board. While our current Top-100 provides an early look at the class, several players just outside that group have the upside to make a run at becoming Top-50 pick by next July. The landscape of the MLB Draft continues to evolve each and every year. What teams value at the top of the draft can change based on the strength of a particular class, shifts in player development philosophy, and, perhaps most importantly, the way organizations evaluate risk and upside. Some trends are subtle, while others become impossible to ignore when viewed across multiple years. For this study, I set out to answer one question: What player profiles do teams value at the top of the draft? To answer it, I analyzed the Top-100 picks from each of the last six drafts (2021-2026). That gives us 600 total selections to examine and provides a large enough sample to identify both the profiles that have remained consistently popular and those that have gained or lost significant ground. 2027 Top 100 Draft Board  Current Favorite: SS Dylan Seward, Norco HS (Calif.) In our first iteration of the 2027 Draft Board, Norco shortstop Dylan Seward ranks No. 1 overall. The switch-hitter is an ultra-twitchy player with a lot to like on both sides of the ball. He is a supreme athlete that should stick up the middle. Explosiveness is shown in all aspects of his game and gives the profiles big time upside.  In the event that Seward does not go 1:1, each member of our draft team selected a player that they think could wind up in that spot.
