2022 Prep Class Rankings Risers: Pitchers

Photo: Brock Porter (Perfect Game)
2022 Prep Class Rankings Risers: Hitters

The only arm to enter the top 10 is right-hander Nick Dugan (2022 Eureka, CA). He had one of the loudest outings of the fall and can run his fastball into the mid- 90s with advanced secondary offerings to go with his budding command. Dugan presents a good combination of both current polish and future projection.

Ian Ritchie Jr. (2022 Brainbridge, WA) has an electric arm and was pretty consistent with his 92-96 mph fastball this fall. He has the makings of a plus breaking ball and showed plenty of control to go along with his swing-and-miss stuff. As he learns to design and sequence it could get scary pretty quickly.

Brock Porter (2022 Milford, MI) had a standout performance at the WWBA World Championships. He sat in the low-to-mid 90s with his heater and flashed a plus changeup. All eyes will be on the development of his breaking stuff but with his athleticism, it's only a matter of time.

Tyler Gough (2022 Perris, CA) has some of the best pure arm speed in the class and threw 96 mph bolts in Florida late this fall. He is keeping his hand speed up on the breaking stuff better and all eyes will be on how he starts to manipulate the ball with spin moving forward.

Robert (Chase) Shores (Midland, TX) has as much helium potential as anyone in the class. The 6-foot-8 long and lean frame has a lot more arm speed than you would think given his length and obviously presents some plane problems for hitters. He has a solid three pitch mix and he already throws a good amount of strikes.

David Horn (2022 Mission Viejo, CA) has a tall and sturdy frame and lots of life to his low-90s fastball. His feel for his off speed and polish stand out the most, though. He utterly pounds the strike zone and has a chance to have three above average to plus pitches as he develops. He also gets rave reviews for his athleticism and has some two-way potential.

Julius Sanchez (2022 Lasalle, IL) has a strong base to go along with his lightning quick right shoulder. He pitches in the low-90s but can run the heater up to 96 mph and he has good carry on the pitch. The hand speed stays up on his curveball and at its best should be a solid second offering. The development of the changeup will be monitored early in 2021.

Tucker Biven (2022 New Albany, IN) is a very good position prospect as he shows good actions at shortstop and plenty of strength in his bat. This fall however, he had a massive outing on the mound as he tunneled three pitches and held low-90s velocity for six innings. Biven looks like one of the true two-way prospects in the class.

Nicolas Bronzini (2022 San Roman, CA) has real swing-and-miss stuff from the left side. He has mostly a two-pitch mix at this point and his 90 mph fastball and tight curveball compliment each other so well that he racks up an unusual amount of swing-and-miss. He is a big southpaw and the clean arm action and timing in his process suggests a velocity jump in the near future.

Luis Rujano (2022 Orlando, FL) ended his 2020 campaign on a high note as he sat in the 90-94 mph range at the WWBA. He has an ultra-projectable frame with pretty good control of the fastball. The right-hander is another prospect that will be scouted heavily to see how the breaking stuff develops, but with the strides he made, the secondary stuff should trend up too.

Dakota Stone (2022 Jacksonville, FL) has some serious arm talent from the left side. He sits in the low-90s with good arm side life on the pitch. His curveball and slider both have good traits to get dead swings and as he learns to repeat his delivery and release point, he should continue to rise.

Michael Forret (2022 Indian Trail, NC) runs his fastball up in the low-90s with quality secondary offerings to go with his ability to collect swing-and-miss and control both sides of the plate. The 6-foot-4 frame projects for more and the body control makes you feel comfortable that the jumps will continue. This could be a fast riser with a solid winter of work in the weight room.

Benjamin Abeldt's (2022 McKinney, TX) frame, loose limbs, and clean release from the left side give one plenty to get excited about. There is considerable upside remaining and he can already control the run to the arm side with the fastball and also control the tight slider that darts to the glove side with depth. It’s an exciting follow as he fills out.

Kyle McCoy (2022 Ringoes, NJ) was impressive down the stretch. His 6-foot-4, 170 pound frame will fill out naturally and is already producing upper-80s velocity. He throws from a tough slot and misses under barrels with all three pitches. There is a competitive disposition to the lefty which was fun to watch in Florida this fall.

Michael Kennedy (2022 Troy, NY) has enough current strength in his core that helps him to repeat his delivery and it allows him to match his release on his three-pitch mix. It’s pretty steady at 87-90 mph on the fastball and his ability to sequence and set hitters up that stands out right now, making the pitchability quite attractive.

Landon Russell (2022 Phenix City, AL) is a twitchy two-way athlete that showed big, yet raw tools last winter. The development process has served Russell well as the righty pounded the strike zone at 88-91 mph with confidence in his breaking ball and changeup. It is more of a sinking, force-contact based arsenal right now but has all the elements to get future swing-and-miss.

Lucas Davenport (2022 Prosper, TX) has a big 6-foot-5 Texas sized frame. His firm low-90s fastball combined with good body control help him pound the strike zone. There is significant upside from a velocity standpoint and his current strike throwing profile will give him plenty of rope to let his off speed develop. All signs point to consistent gains, however.

Connor Hegan (2022 Neptune Beach, FL) has the desirable size and arm speed one looks for in a true future rotation piece. At 6-foot-5, 210 pounds he has natural advantages in plane and extension that he uses well. Now he is using his lower half more efficiently and the velocity jumped to the low-90s late in the fall and the off speed has tightened and firmed up as well.

Isaac Williams (2022 Fleming Island, FL) had a standout performance in Fort Myers this fall as he sat around 90 mph during his three-plus innings of work. He reached back for 93 mph bolts whenever he needed the extra gear and spun a solid slider that flashed above average too. This profile fits as a strong and durable power arm.

Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Sam Jobe (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, with a lean, athletic frame and plenty of projection. He bats and throws right-handed. Jobe shows good feel for the...

Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The barrel works efficiently through the zone and there is a solid offensive foundation present. Currently ranked as the No. 66 catcher nationally.  Gavin Politz (2030 OF, FL) continued a strong tournament...

Connor Ashley (‘29, FL) has struck out six over six no hit innings thus far. Got the FB up to 87 w/ feel for a sharp two-plane slider. #PGWS @Florida_PG pic.twitter.com/M7mEmTH8pk — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Connor Ashley (’29, Minneola, FL) was stellar on Sunday, striking out seven in a seven inning no hitter. He operates from a medium-to-large right-handed frame with length, room to fill, and lower half strength. Ashley works exclusively from the stretch, starting at the belt before working into a higher compact leg lift, firing down the mound via a long arm action. He releases from a high three-quarters slot, with the fastball jumping from the hand up to 87. Ashley mixed in a sharp 11-5 breaking ball with depth and late bite, a true swing-and-miss offering.  Matthew Hernandez (’29, Miami Lakes, FL) has posted strong numbers on both...

Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Carter White – Falmouth Commodores  Talk about making a great first impression! White introduced himself in a very loud and boisterous way this past week by going 9-17 (.529 AVG) with 6 RBI...

High speed look at the FF-SL-CH from '27 RHP Liam McGeady (OH)... #NatElite @PG_OhioValley @Cincy_Legends https://t.co/hhoDL7DBbi pic.twitter.com/Ts79GLPGoU — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Liam McGeady (2027, Liberty Township, Ohio) had the stuff working on Saturday morning, getting the start for Legends Scout 2027. The uncommitted right-hander ran it up to 91 and sat 88-90 with a full starter’s mix. All three of the secondaries played well and project moving forward. The curveball worked in the mid-70s with good depth and healthy shape. The slider operated in the 79-82 range with gyro spin and short break. McGeady rounded out the repertoire with a changeup that showed big fade and depth, proving effective versus lefties. He ended the outing going five ⅔ innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits, striking out six total. The tall and long 6-foot-5,...
