2022 Prep Class Rankings Risers: Hitters

Photo: Cole Young (Perfect Game)

There was no change at the top but shortstop Cole Young (2022 Wexford, PA) did move up into the top ten. Young has always displayed some of the better actions, range, and instincts at shortstop in the ’22 class. Long has he been lauded as a “baseball player” and “winner” and this fall he put on some good strength as well. It translated to him keeping his excellent bat to ball skills while adding some big pull power that is showing up in games.

After making waves late in the summer, the lefthanded hitting Malcolm Moore (2022 Sacramento, CA) backed it up big time at the WWBA World Championships. His .412 clip with three doubles and two home runs helped lead his underclass team all the way to the finals in the most competitive amateur event in the world.

Paxton Kling's (2022 Roaring Spring, PA) reputation and expectations for his high level hitting prowess are starting to preceed the right-handed hitter. He hit over .400 in 2020 and even made a pit stop at the new WWBA Workout Showcase before the World Championship and ran a 6.45 and threw 92 mph from the outfield. Keep checking the boxes here.

Max Williams (2022 Fleming Island, FL) enjoyed a monster PG Underclass All American Games and he backed that up hitting .500 in his next two events with two doubles and two home runs. He is young for the class and the left-handed power could continue to be a separator for him in the 2022 class.

Jack Lausch (2022 Chicago, IL) just looks the part with his smooth and athletic movements and sweet left-handed stroke. He is a pure hitter who batted .391 in 2020. Don’t sleep on his power as he amassed a 1.181 OPS, including clubbing three home runs. He is a good runner as well.

Devin Taylor (2022 Cincinnati, OH) is another smooth swinging lefty bat from the Midwest. The speed and bat-to-ball ability have always stood out and now that his frame is filling out, his profile is trending up. The last remaining component is the arm strength which seems to be developing too.

Ethan Petry (2022 Land O’Lakes, FL) has a tall and long frame with huge projection and he's already showing in-game power to go along with him being very young for the class. He ended his fall in style as he batted .583 with four extra base hits during his last Perfect Game event of 2020.

Jett Williams (2022 Heath, TX) is a rangy and gritty defender that can play all over the field. His short stroke and innate timing were on display this fall in Fort Myers. If he can find a home in the middle of the field and keeps getting stronger, he should keep rising. The athleticism is not in question.

Ben Barrett (2022 Orlando, FL) has always had huge upside on the mound and nothing has changed there with his low-90s fastball and power off-speed stuff. The bat and defense are what showed up big in Florida at the WWBA World Championship though. He hit over .400 with some doubles while also making some spectacular plays at the hot corner. The development is starting to take shape.

Justin Crawford (2022 Las Vegas, NV) is simply one of the fastest and potentially one of the most disruptive top of the lineup prospects in the country. The left-handed stick and big range in centerfield only add to his tremendous long-term upside. The frame has not come close to filling out either.

Gavin Guidry (2022 Lake Charles, LA) has the ability to impact a game in a lot of different ways. He is a solid defender with instincts, a quick stroke on offense, and a 92 mph fastball on the hill. The wiry frame, with twitch to go along with it, makes him easy to dream on. The production has been consistent as well.

Davis Green (2022 Blackshear, GA) was a model of consistency in 2020 as he seemed to ring the bell at nearly every event. He hit .378 with a 1.167 OPS on the circuit. His four home runs in 90 at-bats should show the work he continues to put in as he went homer-less in his previous 150+ at bats before that. That’s a pretty steep climb in output.

Chris Maldonado (2022 Short Hills, NJ) is a high energy prospect with a quick first step and plenty of range to both sides at shortstop. The actions and arm fit there and it matches perfect with his high IQ. The right-handed bat shows big promise too, as he hits to all fields and consistently puts together competitive and productive at bats.

Stewart Evans (2022 Laurinburg, NC) hit .429 with a 1.300 OPS during 2020 and capped it off by a huge WWBA Underclass World Championship. He hit, hit for power, and worked walks during his weekend in Fort Myers. The righty showed plenty of power potential as well, hitting a long home run that reached the road at Terry Park.

Cannon Peebles (2022 Mechanicsville, VA) has always had elite catch and throw ability. The bat needed to be monitored as it developed and now the whole profile seems to be taking shape. A switch-hitter, Peebles finished strong as he showed plenty of juice in the bat to go along with his patience and pitch recognition skills. If the bat continues to bridge the gap with his defense, he should continue an upward trajectory.

Reese Chapman (2022 Aurora, CO) raked in 2020 to a tune of .384 with a 1.080 OPS. He has added strength and is impacting big at the point of contact. He ended the fall in style as he hit .384 with extra base hits a plenty. This is a huge follow next year as he has proven very accurate with his bat and his smooth left-handed swing stays in the zone a long time which doesn’t hurt the ceiling either.

You like 6-foot-9 lefties up to 100 mph? 2026 Brody Bumila (MA) was electric in season opener, super easy upper-90s, multiple 100s. Easy operation w/ simple delivery despite size. That's really all you need to know. Oh, and the opposing team arrived 40 minutes late. Coming off a state-championship run in basketball, Texas signee Brody Bumila made his first start of the spring on April 2nd and didn't disappoint in front of at least 40 scouts packed tightly together behind the backstop.  Knowing it was going to be a quicker look given...

College Top 25: April 13

Vincent Cervino
Article Image
In a season where remaining in the Top 25 has become a war of attrition, the No. 1 UCLA Bruins (33-2) are making the game look much easier than it is in all reality.  Winners of 27-games in a row, this club continues to win games by any means necessary as they continue their historic run.  Beyond the incredible win streak, the Bruins have started off Big Ten play (18-0) by sweeping their first six conference weekend.  Adding to their resume, in Game 1 of their series at Rutgers, they won a 14-inning thriller by a score of 4-1where their pitching staff registered an eye-popping 30-strikeouts while only surrendering 1 walk and 4 hits throughout.  In most any other season, the No. 2 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (30-5) would be sitting atop the poll as they are putting together a historic season of their own.  They swept Florida State (24-11) who was previously ranked...

PG Draft: Favorite Position Group

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
Every draft class has its strengths. Some years its a loaded group of prep infielders, some years its a deep collection of college arms. In this year’s class, certain position groups stand out above the rest to us. This week, the draft team dives into their favorite position groups. Groups that we believe are loaded with depth, upside, and big league potential. College Infielders It’s hard not to get excited about the crop of college infielders in this year’s class because of who is at the top. Roch Cholowsky alone makes the group exciting. He’s got gold glove potential at the next level and an offensive profile that should make him one of the Top 15 to 20 prospects in all of baseball the second he gets drafted. Justin Lebron is another player with as much upside in the class. He is a premium athlete that can really pick it at short and has big upside with the...

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 64

Ron Wolforth
Article Image
What Do Barry Zito, Justin Verlander, Trevor Bauer, and Dallas Keuchel All Have in Common? By Ron Wolforth | Texas Baseball Ranch® | PG Arm Care Take a second and think about the question posed in the title before you read on. Four Cy Young Award winners. Four of the most decorated pitchers of their generation. What's the common thread? The first answer is obvious… they all won the most prestigious individual award in pitching. Most of you probably got there immediately. The second answer is less obvious… they all trained at the Texas Baseball Ranch® at some point in their development. Interesting, maybe, but not the point of this article. The third answer is the one I really want you to sit with, because it has direct relevance to your career right now: they all move completely differently. And they all attack hitters completely differently. Don't rush past that....

DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 8

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
We are past the midpoint of the college baseball season and the stakes are rising by the week. Conference races are tightening, schedules are getting harder, and the résumés that will matter in the selection room are being written right now — one series at a time. This week's most significant development came in Division II, where North Greenville swept Young Harris in three consecutive one-run games to claim the top spot for the first time this season, knocking Tampa from a perch they've held most of the year. It's a genuine changing of the guard at the top, and it's exactly the kind of shakeup that makes this stretch of the season worth paying close attention to. Across all three divisions the picture is coming into focus. In Division I NAIA, Georgia Gwinnett remains the standard while Taylor and Cumberlands continue to make their cases from behind. In Division III,...
