*Rk. Denotes National Rank in PG HS Class of 2021

It’s a rather large class heading to Fort Worth next fall with an array of talent from around the country set to sign their NLI's with the Horned Frogs. With 20 players committed, more than half of them are primary pitchers, putting a clear emphasis on the staff wanting to build depth at the position. Having a top recruiting class is nothing new for TCU under Jim Schlossnagle and with the type of skill and depth he and his staff have coming in with this class, this group has the type of talent to propel them back to Omaha down the road.

Outfielder Thomas DiLandri gave his verbal commitment early in the process to the Frogs and he remains the top ranked player of the group, checking in at No. 71 nationally. Physically gifted at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, DiLandri not only looks the part but has a collections of tools not often found in a prep player with 6.6 speed, a plus arm in the outfield which also produces a low-90s fastball on the mound, and a 100 mph exit velocity. It’s the standout bat speed, loose wrists and big power from the right side that helped DiLandri stand out at an early age and they’re traits that continue to show in his present game.

The incoming offense is more than just DiLandri however with catcher Creed Willems, switch-hitting shortstop Hunter Teplanszky, and hard-hitting Ohio native Logan Maxwell all ranked within Perfect Game’s top 300 for the 2021 class, nationally. Shortstop David Bishop and 6-foot-4 left-handed hitting first baseman Kolton Koonce are also both ranked within the top 500, adding depth to the sticks as both show present juice and plenty of long-term projection. Willems enjoyed as consistent of a summer as any, hitting. 340 at a variety of high level events while showing off his big left-handed power, natural bat-to-ball skills, and solid actions behind the plate which are coupled with advanced arm strength. His presence is key in this class not only for his bat, but also because he’s the lone catcher of the group which boasts so many high end arms.

Teplanszky is a former Select Festival pick who has continued to show refined defensive actions up the middle while taking the offensive components of his game to the next level as he continues to fill out his 6-foot-3 frame with strength. Speaking of strength, that’s exactly what Maxwell brings from the left side of the plate as the Ohio native made quite the splash during the WWBA World Championship-his first PG event of 2020-where he hit .357 with a home run and a double.

Depth on the mound certainly isn’t lacking with this group, led by the duo of right-hander Caedmon Parker and PG All American Gray Thomas, both of whom join DiLandri and Willems on the most recent Top 300 draft list. Parker is a long and ultra-projectable 6-foot-4 arm out of The Woodlands Christian Academy who burst onto the national scene in a big way this past summer, showing a fast and fluid arm stroke that produced an easy 93 mph fastball. Thomas is all about power and given the deceptiveness of his slot, there’s nothing easy about timing up his low-90s fastball given the hard sink and overall discomfort of the at-bat. Add in that he shows a solid average slider and ability to turn over a quality changeup and you have a potential big time arm in Thomas.

Both right-hander Jake Kolkhorst and left-hander Trip Banta, a pair of arms out of Texas, both threw during the WWBA World Championship down in Fort Myers and each delivered some eye-opening stuff. Kolkhorst, with a long and projectable 6-foot-2 frame, tossed a pair of innings in which he struck out four while sitting comfortably in the low-90s, peaking at 92 mph. The top ranked of three left-handers in the class, Banta made a brief but loud impression in Fort Myers with a fastball that topped out at 93 mph with a relatively low effort release while showing a sharp, swing and miss type slider as his go-to secondary.

It shouldn’t come as any shock that TCU has high level talent and plenty of it, led by a bevy of arms, all of whom have shown quality arsenals in PG events while several offer plenty of long-term projection. While a majority of the class comes from within state, the Horned Frogs showed their reach national with this class as six different states are represented.
