WWBA World Championship Scout Notes: Day 1

Reds Midwest Scout got off to a quick 0-2 start in pool play, losing to Hit Factory Pro 3-2 over at JetBlue on Friday morning. Ben Kudrna (2021, Overland Park, Ks.) got the start for the Reds and was wholly pretty good, allowing a single run over 3 innings with 3 hits and 2 walks, punching out 3 in the process. An LSU commit, Kudrna has had a good summer on the circuit, establishing himself in the top-5 round discussion in regards to the MLB Draft. He ran his fastball up to 94 mph in this outing, sitting more in the 89-93 mph range as the outing went on, showcasing plus arm speed with a pretty simple operation, creating good angle on the pitch. His slider is sharp and short, tunneled well in the low-80s with solid bite. It’s a solid pitch right now with some projection left on it, and has the makings of an out-pitch long term. He’s got a good changeup as well, thrown in the low-mid 80s, turned over well with fade and arm speed. The makings of a 3-pitch starter are here, and Kudrna has a chance to elevate his stock further with a strong spring before the draft.
