East Coast Pro Scout Notes: Day 1

From Day 1: Rockies righthander Aaron Calhoun (2021, Pearland, Tex.) was very impressive in his three innings on the bump during his relief outing as he showed a lot of fastball traits to like and the arm speed that gives him a very high velocity ceiling. The Oklahoma commit has a lot of things to like including a firm fastball that peaked at 94 mph and sat in the low 90's on a consistent basis. Calhoun generates a very high spin rate on the fastball and that coupled with a shorter vertical release angle allow for the fastball to generate riding life and really miss a lot of bats with the pitch. He pitched primarily with the fastball, working it to any quadrant of the dish and maintaining that low 90's velocity throughout the start. There’s effort and intent to the delivery but his ability to maintain the stuff stood out while the breaking ball worked in the mid 70's and was a nice complementary pitch to the heater and showed solid average potential down the line. He’s a strong pitching prospect and given his plus qualities has legitimate upside.
